Title: 2016 - 50 years of decimal coinage?
Post by: kchan1111 on October 22, 2014, 10:35:55 PM
This may be premature considering RAM just announced the 2015 coins.

But if Australia decimalised in 1966 then 2016 would be 50 years. Any ideas what special coins we are getting?

A set of 50 25mm $1 Al-Br - depicting a different design for a major event for that year for the past 50 years? :yahoo: :P

Yep! The 14th Feb 2016 would be the end the 50th year in the modern math. lol

So the 50th year would stretch over 14th Feb 2015 to 14th Feb 2016. As the 50th year would be 49 years and one month the 14th Mar 2015.

So it is the beginning of the 50th year 14th Feb 2016 to 14th Feb 2017. As 50 years and one month would be 14th Mar 2016.

We all celebrated the next millennium on the turn of 2000 but it should of been on the turn 2001.

Federation in Australia started at the beginning of the 19th century which was at the beginning of 1901.

I thought it's already come and gone - since florin goes to 63. I am collecting that atm. Guess they stop before 1966.

It will be interesting.

1901 was the beginning of the 20th century, not the 19th. Otherwise I'd be watching 19th Century Fox for old movies.:taunt:
BTW we didn't all celebrate the millennium at the start of 2000. I went to bed at 11pm AEDST (seen one fireworks display, seen them all). The fools who celebrated at "midnight" all got it doubly wrong, for one thing midnight is correctly at approximately 1AM during daylight saving (and noon/midday at 1PM,all depending on where you are in the arbitrary time zones ) plus of course the real millennium is at the start of 2001.
If they issue 50 different $1 coins to celebrate then I bet Trout will lose his hair (scales?) trying to complete his set.

I agree that the "new millennium" started 00:00 hours January 1, 2001.
But consider this; today 23 October 2014 is the first day of the second millennium of starting day 22 October 1013!

millennium
mɪˈlɛnɪəm/
noun: millennium; plural noun: millennia

    1. A period of a thousand years, especially when calculated from the traditional date of the birth of Christ.

    2. An anniversary of a thousand years.

If you want to start a debate as to when Christ was actually born I suggest you open a new "Chin Wag" thread.

And, I am looking forward to 14 February 2016. I hope the RAM does something decent and not a lot of granny bait.

If we wanted to be completely correct the new millennium started when it was midnight in Bethlehem (religious standpoint) or midnight in Greenwich (international time zone standpoint).
Plus the terms AM and PM don't correctly apply during  daylight saving and everybody gets the time wrong; so at 00.00 hours during daylight saving it is 11PM  as it is only 11 hours since noon, noon being at 13.00 hours and 11 hours post meridiem takes us to 24.00./00.00 hours.
Hope I've confused everyone. :thank_you::fie:

OMG
you guys have lost me!!

though re: 2016 decimal fifty year anniversary
I think the RAM stuffed that up by producing those magnificent boxed sets with the plaster casts of the original designs for the decimal currency competition
I really don't believe that they could do any better than that set
I don't have one but I have admired the ones that  I have looked at

If you have a look at :

http://www.ramint.gov.au/designs/purchase/downloads/mintissue86.pdf

page 7 you will see the details of the set.

For a picture of the set go to:

http://www.australian-threepence.com/blog/2010/11/1966-decimal-heritage-set.html

Great set and rare (400) as that is the only way you can get the 1 and 2 cent coins dated 2010.

Currently when the set does appear on the market the asking price is around the $1500 mark.

Cheers

Impressive. Was there a ballot to allocate the 400?

No,  just first in best dressed.

Sold out in about 3 days!   You basically had to be in the know or belong to a coin forum with member in the trade.  (The former ACBO forum)

Interesting reading - good call on the one shilling equals 10 cents on his part too.
