Title: perth mint off metal strikes
Post by: serial on October 21, 2014, 02:45:37 PM
anyone here know anything about these?
I got these in a deceased estate collection recently from a former Perth mint worker and have no idea what they could be from.
any help would be appreciated
the aluminium type round one is .63 grams and approx. 15.5mm
the bronze like one is 2.66 and approx. 19mm from point to point

I have several of the round ones that I picked up 5 years ago from I S Wrights scratch bin for a dollar or so each. So they are not rare (whatever they are).
IIRC the swan can vary slightly in chunkyness.

The design was done by George Kruger Gray and used on the 1929 WA Centenary medals.

Perhaps these were test pieces?

no these are way to small to be test pieces for the 1929 medal. neal just because you got them cheap doesn't mean they are not rare or valuable! I have learnt that sometimes the cheapest finds are the best! you just need to be able to id them

.63g paperweight?
May as well say a threepence (1.4g) is a heavy weight to hold down tarpaulins.:taunt:
These things are too small, too light and too flat to make it as paperweights. The only possibility that I can think of is that they are some kind of Perth Mint logo that was intended for insertion with sets but as nobody has recognised them the idea wasn't carried out.
IIRC they are the same on both sides so that rules out the jarrah display boxes. Any Perth Mint blister packs?

I have a source inside the Perth mint that may be able to put this mystery to bed. I am just getting permission to publish 1st

and Australian coins we all collect glorified paperweights (coins) so I don't know why you are exasperated that I want to properly id these before putting them away. I go through a lot of collections and its the stuff I don't know and that I have to learn about that I find most enjoyable about collecting. I have learnt more about history through coins than I have any other way

You could try reaching out to Walter Bloom, president of the NAA who is compiling a website of Western Australian numismatica of which these appear to be part.  Here's his website, there's a contact page you could use:

Perhaps an invitation to join this forum should be extended to people like Mr Bloom? But it will get confusing to have 2 Walters.

Maybe an email to the Perth Mint with scans of the item might do the trick.

it works for me for RAM enquiries.
