Hi
While reviewing my collection and selling my surpluses, I found that the 2006 Gymnastics 50c seems to be fetching very high prices on ebay compared with others in the series. While I was happy to get $134 for the last one that I offered - this seems way out of sync with the others that are getting around $15. Can anyone enlighten me as to what is behind this? The mintage seems similar to the others.

Maybe there was more than one bidder that just wanted that coin and weren't prepared to take NO for the answer :ok:
I'm not even aware of how many of each one was minted, so I can't help. :dontknow:
In 2006 16 different types of these were minted to celebrate the Melbourne Commonwealth Games.
Average Mintage is 22,000 the Aquatics coin had a mintage of over 31,000
OK, just checked and according to my 6th Edition of Krause, the mintage for the Gymnastics coin is 3000 which is the lowest for the ones I can find.
Next lowest is Hockey, with 4082, then Basketball with 5002. The rest are all over 22000, but there's no mintage figures at all for Squash and Boxing, and even with them I can only find info on 15 coins.
I might have to try to find my Set so I can check up on the 16th coin, or maybe it's not a 'Sport Specific' coin.
The missing sport was Badminton, so no mintage for that either.
Sport-Mintage
Aquatics-31702
Athletics-22475
Badminton-?
Basketball-5002
Boxing-?
Cycling-22861
Gymnastics-3000
Hockey-4082
Lawn Bowls-22,602
Netball-22432
Rugby 7's-24427
Shooting-21070
Squash-?
Table Tennis-22070
Triathlon-22302
Weightlifting-22332
Thanks, Nevol - it looks like gymastics was the lowest mintage at 3000. Looks like Basketball and hockey were also very low mintage for those who want a complete 50c set
Trout, I have tried it with 3 coins in the last week or so and all were over $100 or close to it.
Maybe I can put a whole set on and see what happens - 16 sports plus the student design
Whoops! Got confused about what games we were talking about. Please ignore anything I may have said.
Interesting stuff.
Why were mintages for these different I wonder?
So which source is correct Krause or McDonalds ?
The mintage figures shown on Page 143 21st edition of Macca's is vastly different than as posted by Nevol.
just had a look at that
so does that mean that really those individual mintages are 15,500 less than the total mintage for the carded ones? as 15,500 sets were produced
RG, From what I've been able to find out so far, that looks like it might be the case, but maybe I'm missing something.

According to Maccas 2014 guide page 143 mintages listed include the 15500 complete folder set.
Gymnastics mintage figure there is 25574 so that equates to 10074 separate carded Gymnastics 50c cards.
I have no idea if these figures are correct, what does Renniks guide have to say?

I have a copy of Rennics that gives a mintage of 25,574 for the gymnastics coin.
Strangely the mintage for the Hocky coin is listed at only 6,261

Betcha happy with that.
I've just finished trawling through all the RAM Reports that contain mintages for the 2006 Comm Games 50c pieces and I hope you can make sense out of what I've come up with.
This is taken from the only 2 reports that I can find this data in.
This would indicate to me that the 4 sports that have figures much less than the rest are most likely incorrect figures in the RAM Reports as the differences in each case between Maccas and the RAM data just happen to be exactly 15500, which are quantities for the 16 coin sets (18 coin actually, but only 16 Sport ones).
It also appears that Macca has access to more accurate data than what is in the RAM Reports, or have I missed some data for those 4 sports somewhere?
Now, I don't claim to be any sort of a whiz with figures but this following data is also taken from the same 2 sources and I'm assuming these 18 coin starter sets are in fact the sets we are all familiar with.
The 2 figures for Quantity do add up to 15500. Great! What the heck are these so called 'pieces' that total 62000? If it's supposed to be the total number of coins used to compile those 15500 sets, they're only 186000 off the mark! Is there anyone who understands this that can explain this anomaly to me?
Nancy - this is all guesswork but in each case the pieces are 4 x the quantity and since that are 4 sport options that are out 15,500 perhaps the starter sets only had 4 coins in them.
Pedro
I was confused when I first read this thread, That confusion has now increased ten fold
Nobody has mentioned at all the Coin and Stamp Booklet that contained four coins with stamps.
The coins were Athletics, Swimming, Cycling and Hockey. (I think).
Would these coins make much difference to the totals?

Sure! The buyer was very reliable and paid straight away - that is how I like ebay sales!
Thanks for all the hard work in getting more accurate mintages, Nevol
Goldseeker raised another important point - how many of the stamp / 4 coin booklets were produced?
That still has me puzzled as to why the gymnastics is selling for such a high price. I can't be only to do with mintages
? popularity of gymnastics might also make the coin more desirable?
Excellent research everyone thank you this topic is intruiging

In both RAM Reports the sets are referred to as 18 coin set uncirculated starter, so I assumed they contained 18 coins, but the assumption may be wrong. I guess if they contained 18 coins, they would have been a complete set, not a starter set, so good thinking Pedro. :good:

Hey, just because I'm the author doesn't mean I understand it all. Clear as mud and unfortunately, getting murkier. :winkextra:

Dunno Goldie I'll see what else, if anything, I can find out about them, didn't even know they existed. :whistle2:

Bugger, looks like another trawling session with the RAM reports. :dash1:
If anyone has
any specific info relating to this subject, please post it so we may all become more informed. :acute:
Greetings,
FWIW, the starter pack had 6 of the coins - see page 11 of http://www.ramint.gov.au/designs/purchase/downloads/mintissue61.pdf
Cheers
Peter (notcb)
Of those 6 coins, four were sports - Basketball, Hockey, Shooting and Weightlifting all minted in early 2005 and noted in the 2004-2005 Annual Report. Other sports were added later in 2005 and hence their mintages appear in the 2005 - 2006 Annual Report.
Cheers

The combined figures that Nevol tabled make sense.
The starter pack had the 4 coins - 15500 starter packs.
Over time, the other coins were produced and 15500 added to the starter packs.
The additional 5000 - 7000 coins were the individual carded ones sold separately.
(Plus the ones that Goldie mentioned in the APO 4 coin set. This set of 4 coins CYCLING, HOCKEY, ATHLETICS and AQUATICS and various stamps was released by APO in January 2006 - details are on page 11 of
http://shop.auspost.com.au/INTERSHOP/static/WFS/AusPost-Shop-Site/-/AusPost-Shop/en_AU/assets/document/1271805244-bull282.pdf item 1485302 for $24.95)
So with the exception of the Aquatics one which stands around 31,000, all the other coins were around the 21000 to 22000 mark.
Of which 15500 are held in the special album.
So the initial query on the Gymnastics coin - about 7000 free to be sold - not a particularly rare coin, yet able to attract a good selling price.
Obviously some collectors are beginning to realise that a complete set of 50cent coins is going to require a considerable outlay of what are relatively scarce coins, compared with other NCLT carded coins related to Royals and other events.
