I was updating the PNC list on the Australian Coin Collecting Blog (http://www.australian-threepence.com/blog/2010/11/the-complete-guide-to-pnc-issues-philatelic-numismatic-covers.html) today and I've come up with a dilemma of two kinds.
1. Are these PNC's?
2. Dammit do I have to buy them to keep my unc dollar collection complete (the rules of my collection are unc, 25mm, al br and all official packaging).
Kookaburra $1 (http://shop.auspost.com.au/collectables/impressions/nature/sku/0310391)
Cockatoo (http://shop.auspost.com.au/collectables/impressions/nature/sku/0310392)
Flying Fox (http://shop.auspost.com.au/collectables/impressions/nature/sku/0310393)
Rosella (http://shop.auspost.com.au/collectables/impressions/nature/sku/0310394)
Is this the year when I truly say enough is enough?
didnt look but my understanding is that a pnc is both a coin and stamp release together on one package

Going by your own rules, I'd say you're about to spend some more money. :yahoo:
the rosella is very tempting
PNC....philatelic and numismatic cover....ie first day cover with a coin. These are therefore not PNC's but some other untermed phillatelic and numismatic issue.
As far as should they form part of your $1 coin collection....by your rules yes as you have nothing about colour in there. Are they in official packaging......what is the defination of "official". If it is RAM packaging then no as this is Aussie Post packaging.....in my book a post packaged product....just like all PNC's.
If you say Aussie post is official then you have to include every other third party packaging as well (eg downies) as after all Aussie post are not the mint, they are just another 3rd party organisation that repackages Aussie coins.
My rules....if the mint does it it is official....if any other organisation does it it is post packaged and unofficial
So it's a PNI not a PNC. :dodgy:
It does fall into the yes category. I have expanded it (my collecting rules) to include Australia Post but not Downies issues and I have ditched the overprint PNC's because the line got hazy.
I have doubt if on ly Aust Post re packaged the coins without authority from the RAM.
If the packaging includes RAM/Aust post, then I just might have to include them in my PNC collection.
Anyway. storage and costs are another thing.
Bloody PNC's!!!! I swore I would not be buying any more PNC's, BUT,, I got sucked into the Remembrance PNC with $2.00 coloured coin.
Remembrance Day the 11th of the 11th right?
Am I being a bit picky here???
I mean these are for Remembrance day.
But these stupid things are postmarked the 1st of the 11th.
[attachment=521]
Am I being unreasonable in thinking that they should be postmarked the 11th of the 11th?.
Yes yes I do know the 11th was a Sunday.
But if you are going to do this sort of thing should you not try & get it right at least, & why the 1st so there is only ones on the date?
This is definitely the very last PNC I ever buy
QuoteThis is definitely the very last PNC I ever buy

Last years $5 remembrance PNC was postamrked 2/11/11
$5 Remembrance PNC (http://www.australian-threepence.com/blog/2011/12/2011-pnc-remembrance-day-11112011-5.html)
I only have 110 different 25mm $1 coins in my collection as of yet.
I still have a long way to go.
The buggers mint these like there is no tomorrow, It is a struggle just to keep up with the new ones let alone acquiring past issues :dash1:
I have only got stuck into these in earnest over the past year, initialy I didn't realise just how many diferant $1 coins were out there:blush:
Maybe you'll appreciate this Trout.

I was attracted by the pretty little coloured coin. DAMN!!
"To be honest the whole thing now has become a chore because of the sheer number of releases each year and keeping it complete doesn't give me as much pleasure as it used to."
It's a bit like growing a lawn.
A lot of work in the beginning and you have to fertilise and keep the weeds out of it.
If you neglect it for too long it takes a lot of work to get it perfect again.
BUT isn't it SOOOO nice to sit back with a beer and simply admire it when it is back up to scratch again :yahoo:
In comparison you have a fantastic lawn :good:
Mine is yet simply a weed patch :laugh2:

It gives them the opportunity to release ANOTHER PNC postmarked 11/11 down the track. That is what they did last year.
Not sure if this has been covered or not. I did have a read around and could not find any info on this forum about the 2012 V8 supercars 50c PNC.
My understanding is a PNC needs to have a theme for the cover + Stamps + coin that are relevant. It also needs to have dates that a relevant to the overall product.
The cancelation mark is 02 OCT 2012 First Day of Issue. The coin is 2013.
Can the mint use a 2013 coin in a 2012 product that clearly states First Day of Issue in 2012?
Might be easier if I put my question this way, can we have 2014 coins now in 2013?
If this post needs its own thread can Mods please move it, just didn't want to start new tread for nothing.
haha I think I seen that question on stamp boards, simply the Bathurst 50c coin was released 3rd September 2012, and the mint had decided to start using 2013 backing dies, sometimes they do this and its kind of a treat to get a 2013 design early.
Australia post simply used the 50c coins in there PNC products and can put the cancelation mark date as whatever they want, I assume the date on the PNC is actually when the PNC was made, so a month after the official release of the Bathurst 50c commemorative no circulating legal tender coin.
hope this helps.

Thanks for the info yes that helps.......can we call this PNC a "Mule PNC".
Oops please don't all shoot me down :(( I don't mean Mule coin...I mean Mule PNC where one part does not match the other part :)
nope this is not a mule coin, the mint intended it to be 2013 die backing, a mule is a mistake that was no meant by the mint.
and Australia Post was just releasing a PNC with their date stamp on it, it is weird but the whole batch would have been made the same by Australia post.
unless you find different dated PNC's ? don't know much about Australia post PNC and how the do the stamps on them

well i am impressed with the collection but also daunted in being able to catch up with the amount produced by the mints. just flicking through maccas is enough ! :shok::-/:scratch_one-s_head:
hence as a newbie i am sticking to quality pre decimal. back in the old days when life was simple  and am sure trout and pph will persevere
sorry not to help with your dilemma
Bathurst PNCs especially the Medallion PNC are in huge demand now

You know the old saying,, "Never say never?"
Well I blodywell bought another PNC. OMG, WTF......
Maybe I can get out of this on a technicality, because it's a Medallion.
I bought the Holey dollar & dump medallion cover, the best medallion by far & I should know I have a lot of them, (much to my displeasure,)
There is two out at the moment one if a 2013 RAM holey dollar with "C" mint mark at approx. 11 o'clock & the other is the medallion.
I bought official AP PNC today Holey Dollar with RAM coin.
$15.95
AP code 1799360
lol I'm a year behind. Just clicked your link and AP page come up with a Xmas hamper.

The FDI postmark date on Aus Post products applies to the stamp issue date.
It has nothing to do with the coin.
Even if the coin is a PNC only release the date is in the first instance for the stamp and the coin is a bonus.
In this case we (collectors) tend use the FDI date for both items.
Exactly Samhill :)
PNC are not my type of thing but I do encourage collecting coins & stamps.
Remember seeing a PNC at the 1970 Bi centenary Show in Sydney and taking a very long look at one and deciding they were not for me. But searched out the 50c coin by itself.
QuoteTo be honest the whole thing now has become a chore because of the sheer number of releases each year and keeping it complete doesn't give me as much pleasure as it used to.
I am ssssssoooooooooooooo feeling the same way PP.
It has taken me a Huge effort to complete the set from 1984 to 2014 in decent grades.
The new stuff coming from RAM is so shoddy that unless you have access to multiple coins the chances of getting a decently graded coin are slim to buckleys :dash1:
The older issue coins and the care taken with them Far exceed the quality lately.
The 26 ABC coins are the straw that broke the camels Back as far as I am concerned.
RAM have turned a highly collectable series of coins into "Grannybait" in a heartbeat with this alphabet issue of coins IMHO.
2014 is the date my Decimal sets will end for me, I'm done.
I may buy the odd coin that intrigues/interests me but NOT the multiple mintmark/press issues
There is a plethora of far more interesting Numismatic coins out there than the Crap being flogged by RAM and that is where I am at collecting at the moment :yahoo:
And you don't have to stop at our borders either, the world is full of beautiful coins,
as you would know, with your new interest in Indian coins.

I hear you Trout ... this is off topic within PNCs can we move this to a new thread :wavemulticolor:
I've just been looking at PNC's trying to find a 2014 year of the Horse from Perth mint,
I am surprised at the way the bottom has fallen out of the
PNC market I looked at 10 pages on FEEPAY some of the PNC's there that are going for a pittance compared to what they were selling for twelve months ago.
It has been a while since I looked only to find I am not going to get my money back on the PNC's I have.
Don't get me wrong I've sold some PNC's for some big money & have made a lot but I think those days are gone, Gee there's a lot of them now though so I guess it's the case of killing the Goose.
Seems to be the case Interest.
Still the odd issue that excites the natives (eg the recent Sydney Stamp Expo items - at least for the moment). Some of the older special edition (gold foil) PNCs are attracting some nice prices but otherwise the market is down.
Pedro
Coin collecting has become quite expensive in recent years, more and more coins are issued and in different covers or packaging. keeping up with new issues has become a weekly job and hundreds of dollar a year just to have one or two of each. And all this before you even think about Perth Mint issues like the 30mm $1 coins which I do not consider worth collecting as they are not circulated issues.
I think PNCs are a stamp collecting issues and I have never been too interested in collecting all. Usually they have same circulated 25mm $1 coins anyway which are available without the envelope and stamp. Then there are the first day issues where a certain date in important.
I collect for pleasure not for profit and PNCs are a great product.
Official PNCs with RAM circulating type coins are great I enjoy the anticipation of every new release

Goldy that is the thing that excites me about PNCs as well,I didn't secure a full set of either nor a full set of last years show but certain people buy these just for resale,I buy these on secondary market when available

No, Goldie I didn't make it to any of the days of the Expo so missed out.

I have been able to secure a full set of the PNC's and Medallion Envelopes but please don't ask what it cost me.
Cost is irrelevant if you enjoy collecting

From the prices I have seen on Ebay probably second mortgage material!
Pedro
That might be so Pedro.
The price for BOTH the full sets have not been on EBay at all.
Just a trickle of individual day releases for the PNC and the Medallion.
Haven't seen anything that advertises both full sets in the same sale.
It would be interesting to see just what a sale would achieve.
Here you go,full set of all

Looks like you got your wish Goldie!
Pedro
Yeah and I have keeping my eye on ebay for a while.
Thanks for the link.
Now we know - $1,076.
Pedro
Not bad for a $260 initial purchase.
My sets cost me a lot more than that as I had already entered a contract/agreement before the full sets appeared on EBay.
But again, that is my problem and I am not complaining.
Sydney Stamp Show was busy on Thursday and Friday,Saturday had poor attendance and Sunday was absolutely dead
