As far as I know there is nothing special about this PNC (Rennik's catalogue value of $60) so the price "paid" is extremely high. Not convinced by the seller's spiel regarding the PNC and don't know whether there were any bidding shenanigans going on but it does look very odd.

Interesting. Might have to eat my words on this one.
Just found another one sold in mid-July by IS Wright for $305. According to the Wright sale blurb Greg McDonald's tome apparently states that the narrow date in the PNC is extremely rare. Seems to be a significant catalogue value difference compared to Renniks.

I have a letter with my Narrow Date PNC and the auther states he has seen no more than 5/6 Narrow Dated PNC's and valued it several years ago at around $250.00.
Earlier issues of Maccas Catalogue stated that the Wide Date was the rearer of the two.

I certainly wouldn't be paying this for a cover that coin insert is easily swapped for a narrow date
Hi Runway,
"I certainly wouldn't be paying this for a cover that coin insert is easily swapped for a narrow date "
It would be extremely difficult to swap a wide date for a narrow date coin in this PNC.
The coin is sealed on the printed card, which is laminated across the entire surface.
The narrow date PNC is VERY difficult to obtain and more than $250 is typical of the few that come on to the market every so often.
Cheers

Your not going to believe me but I wrote almost the same response as the one I have quoted above abut didn't paste it through fear of being called a smarta#$e.
Now I shall back the above comments a second time.

Certainly these are rare however I am very sceptical about these PNCs ... I have bought 10 of these so called narrow dated PNCs from greedBay and none were item as described so I sent them all back with refund.
Sight unseen very risky buying one of them online and yes I actually believe these can be faked :dodgy:
Hi Runway,
That's certainly bad luck on your purchases - fortunately my narrow date PNC stands up to scrutiny when you put it side by side with a wide date version.
I tend to agree with you that some of the more modern PNCs which have a raised 12 sided sort of capsule built into the card in which the coin rattles around, could be faked with a skilful operator with a razor blade and some clever re-glueing.
However the earlier AP PNCs tended to have the sealing film hard up against the coin on both sides - a little like how the 2 x 2 mylar grips the surfaces of a coin. These are virtually impossible to split open without causing obvious damage. Try it sometime on one of the earlier less valuable AP PNCs.
Cheers
