How would Trout feel if 8,000 was the only bid and some bugger got his dream cheaply?

The Australian pre 1955 proof market is depressed and well off of the catalogue values in either Renniks or Maccas.  I'll bet you a dollar that coin gets less than half what you guessed.  Perhaps even less than a third.

Probably because it's an MS66 and it's got the WINGS sticker on it.  Perhaps it's a top pop coin.  The rupees tend to do well at auction in MS65 and higher as they are the most popular Indian coin to collect.

The Canberra Proof is still only at $8000.
Given the popularity of this coin Worldwide I honestly cannot see this selling cheap, There may only be 2 days to go But then there is the live auction to end this.
The 23% auction fee is pretty outrageous and may put some bidders off But IF this sells for anything less than $25000 I will donate one of my spare Silver 25mm dollar coins to Markns Collection :ok:

A wings sticker is a gold sticker put on by a Florida company that reviews slabs from the big 4 grading companies. It implies that the MS66 is a full 66 and you don't have to worry that you are buying an overgraded coin.
It is no different to the green beans and gold beans of CAC.
As to how good Wings is at reviewing coins or how much their opinion is worth is a matter of opinion, but for high end coins it probably is reasurring to many buyers buying sight unseen.

It's not been as cold as Canberra here in the morning but it's still been pretty freaking cold.  I think any male paracuhting into our backyard in the mornings wouldn't have too much to see.  So that'd be the time to do it.

A couple of factors.
The auction wasn't in Australia so many collectors wouldn't know it happened.
It isn't the biggest auction house either so unless you follow dozens of auction houses (Heritage, Stacks, Spinks, Baldwins,Seaby etc) then you probably never follow this company either
Many probably thought it would go for 40+ so didn't bother registering as it was out of their pocket, I'd bet a few more would have bid had they thought they had a chance at 13+. Trout, would you have bid if you knew it could be all yours for 13K?
The market is weak at the moment, it is a buyers market with many Australian choice material off by half (or more for banknotes).
The luck of the day, it would only take 2 serious top end collectors to start a bidding duel.

The pre-1955 proof market is very depressed compared with the values you can see in the catalogues.  I don't know whether this is related to the collapse of the Rare Coin Company and the generally spooked nature of the "investment" class coins or not.  But regardless, the price realised mirrored exactly the same prices I've been seeing for this type of coin for several months.

Just like the CV's for top graded PCGS coins you may as well ignore CV's for pre-1955 proofs.  They bear little relation to what's actually going on in the market.

QuoteTrout, would you have bid if you knew it could be all yours for 13K?
It took me a Month to pay off my Pagoda due to overspending on coins and PCGS submissions.
I will never put myself in that position again and 13k would do just that.
So NO it was WAY out of my league but a beautiful coin all the same.
I don't think the coin market is "Depressed" at the moment I just think it is coming back to reality Which is a GOOD thing for collectors.
I do envy the winning bidder on this coin But Bloody good luck to them for getting this stunner :yahoo:
