Title: 1933 Overdate..Textbook Example.
Post by: Basil on July 17, 2014, 01:48:43 PM
One of my Brothers Coins that he purchased on Ebay, photos of this variety used to be in early coin books and IIRC was said to be a die used in the early production/mintage of the 1933 Penny.
Looks like something is going on with the first 3 as well.

Damn fine example & great pic too,i was looking at the first 3 & i'm thinking maybe it's a post mint knock/dint ,there is a similar looking knock/dint on the inner ring which i have outlined in red on your pic.

Yeah, also there are 2 'blobs' on the inside of the top loop of the first 3,they show as a copper colour, not sure what they are without clearing away the muck,i'll try & get a better pic of them on the W/end.

On the inside edge of the bottom loop of the first 3 there seems to be a narrow ledge. Do my eyes deceive me or is it there?
A nice example of an overdate.
Dr Paul Holland wrote an excellent article a few years ago on the topic, there are possibly 6 dies involved and you have the best version.

Yes,there is a ledge or something there, also something going on inside the top loop,i'll try and clean the gunk out and get a better pic while i've got the coin out.
I've seen a photo of a similar coin in an old book(1960's?) but its first one  i've seen in the flesh,i have a thought in the back of my head that it was one of the original 1933 dies but wasn't in use for long but i'll have to source the original book to be sure.

I think the above Coin is another variation of 2A,stronger outline.

My examples for comparison purposes. This shows some doubling on the inside of the '9'.

Almost identical to the previous coin, more defined ridge on the top of the first '3'. Noted is the absence of polishing lines.!

Robster, your first image shows a number of die polish marks between the numerals; early strike?
Great images BTW.

A couple more Pics. before its stored back in the dungeon, looks like a normal top loop on the first 3(except for back bit) but interesting ridge inside the lower loop,it seems to extend to tip.

Yeah, nice,i never saw an eg of the early die until Ebay started.

AJ,extreme buyer beware at any Auction, lots of mistakes, some deliberate some just carelessness or  ignorance.
