Yeah I'm never too sure - I remember reading an auction catalogue a year or two ago with lots of stuff supposedly made by him I didn't see any proof.

Also, http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/1965-66-Pattern-Trial-Kookaburra-1d-copper-coin-This-forgery-is-the-work-of-Aus-/222471408656?hash=item33cc544c10:g:iWsAAOSwnNBXXrCx looks pretty amateurish - never could tell from the small photos in Renniks.

:i_agree: Hardly what you could call the work of a Master forger.

Reminds me of the counterfeit 2003 $2 with ER's spaghetti hair.

His family sold quite a bit through Status Int (IS Wright) a few years ago after he died. Obviously Status didn't want to divulge the name calling him "Australia's most famous forger"

Yeah that's the one I was thinking of - from memory the catalogue didn't mention they were being sold by the family and I figured they could be anything.

I don't get how the coppers don't charge both the auction house and the family as they admit to selling fakes and as it's illegal to have in your possession something should be done about it. And people have a hide to complain about chinese fakes..fakes are fakes and doesn't matter where they come from :@

There was a loophole,IIRC,where it wasn't illegal to copy/fake Pre-Dec Currency after Feb. 1966. Of course it was Fraud if you attempted to pass it off as the real thing.
I have a late 1960's article somewhere that states its not illegal to have a copy of a 1930 penny, for eg, in your collection.

I thought there was something as I have seen many for sale but they have "copy" stamped on them and look like they could have been done by the mint but if you read the federal police report it makes it sound like your not suppose to have them and states you should hand any fake into the police. So I can set up my own mint them and start pumping out all sorts of coins :winkextra:

A bit of light reading

Yeah AJ,it gets murky and only gets sorted when a Court decision is made. As i said i read an article in the late 1960's where it was not illegal to have a copy of a 1930 or 1923,for eg,in your collection post 1966 but of course if you attempt to pass them off as genuine then its Fraud.
As usual i can't find the correct article but this is along the same lines but very vague...

Disagree. David Gee is dead so (hopefully) no more of his fakes will be made. Plus he used genuine dies (improperly obtained) in much of his work.
So his product is as interesting to me as Maunders and Twibble and other old fakes. The modern Chinese stuff however I won't touch as that is just funding them to produce more fakes and encouraging them to make higher grade fakes that will ruin the hobby if they get good enough.

Thanks for that Basil, very interesting and like so many things in oz it's hard to tell what is and what is't

Sorry neal but I don't think it matters as a fake is a fake no matter how you look at it or who made it, it's still an illegal coin and should be treated as such.

Where did you find that article?

The one i posted is from Australian Coin World,Sydney based magazine that ran for a couple of years in 1967/68 to try and cash in on the Pre-Dec. feeding frenzy.
The article i can't find but remember reading is from that same period, late 1960's,early 1970's,and is from one of the Sydney Papers/Magazines,may have been thrown out in one of my moves over the years but if i can find it again i'll throw it in this Thread.
