Thanks for the pics AC.

I wonder why / when they decided to "roll their own" again?

Rather glad they did ...... sure beats rolling around in a 44 gal drum!
(Drum, roll your own ..... ok, best I could do).

there wasn't many rolls made, a few hundred, between Melbourne and Sydney.
number are unknown, someone said 200 rolls, and then heard 500
but there is expected to be 1 million in general circulation
knowing armguard they will hold onto them for a while before releasing them

these rolls were made just for dealers, to get on the good side after not getting a allocation of any Victoria cross ballot coins to them

they mint are not expected to go back into rolling coins again this was a one time thing

that's only $50 a coin

If they go like almost every other decimal that has actually increased in value over issue then you'll see all the value increase in the first few weeks or perhaps a month because of the shark like feeding frenzy of profiteers.  Once the chance of an easy buck disappears the heat will drop out of the market and those left holding the "baby" will be unwilling to sell them for less than the exorbitant prices they paid for them.  From that time they'll stay flat and eventually drop backwards when people realise they've made a dud "investment".  I give you the VC dollar and the 2007 Ashes PNC's, and World Heritage PNC as examples.

With a mintage of 1,000,000 they will be scarce NOT rare.
I think the Silver proof 25mm MOR coins have a far better chance of becoming the Rarities in the future along with some of the other low mintage silver proofs.

Post by: Goldseeker on June 28, 2014, 05:15:11 PM
The rarity will be in the 20 coin ROLLS in mint condition and not the individual coin.

I received mine basically at face value and I shall be holding on to them for quite a while.

If, in years to come I am still alive and need money then I might consider selling off some of these "later rarities" to help the funds to live on.

I would concur regarding the loose coins, definitely. However the rolls are significant, as they are the last of the RAM rolls, at least for now.

I see them being cracked open for stag profits, as loose coins will sell for more than rolls in the short term. Then when the million hit the streets, it will be too late to go back, and the few remaining should hold their value nicely.

This is completely off topic, but I don't think that any decimal collectable coin deliberately released by the mint will ever be "rare".  Can you name more than 2 or 3 supposedly "rare" or "scarce" decimal collectables that you can't just go and buy right now?  The only one that springs immediately to mind to me is the heritage set.
Title: RE: 2014 $20 roll of mob of roos
Post by: Goldseeker on June 28, 2014, 06:17:14 PM
I will not disagree with your comments markn but you are hinting at the heritage set, that is more than one coin.   I think I could name that the 2013 "M" Counterstamp 50c piece would be scarce to rare and couldn't be secured at the moment.   (From the World Stamp and Coin Expo here in Melbourne last year).   Considering less than 7,500 were made.

I think the discussion here is about a single coin, namely the 2014 Kangaroo coin.   Although the coin may not become valuable in years to come but I am sure a RAM Roll of them will become valuable.

It has already been stated that these RAM rolls are a one off and how long ago did the RAM cease to produce Rolled coin?

I will come back in 20 years time and try and prove what I have said above.   Hehehe

Not rare at all.  There's at least two on eBay right now.  So if I wanted one I could have one.  And the prices are LESS than what the prices were within a week after the stamp expo.

Uh.  2011?  They did 3 different coins in rolls in 2011 I think.  Not exactly ancient history.

there is nothing on that roll to denote that the RAM made it
the other RAM rolls have RAM all over them

I find the story about sweetening up the dealers to maybe be a wee bit of a story to add to the scarcity myth
the dealers aren't ever allocated the ballot coins - to my knowledge anyways
Title: RE: 2014 $20 roll of mob of roos
Post by: Australian coin on June 28, 2014, 08:35:22 PM
actually Robbie, in all previous year the spare ballot coins had been passed onto dealers, I talk to and buy from several dealers and this has always been the case

see the mint is a business and they don't want to hold onto stock, so they would pass them onto dealers, see the longer they hold a coin the more chance that they could get stuck with it and with base metal prices always changing they might loose money if the market crashed, they are in it for a profit after all.

now circulating coins are produce for the country, the government orders them - thus the mint don't loose money on that, they know that they have to produce so many coin ahead of time

but collector coins well that's a different story, the mint has to decide, do they set a mintage and expect to sell that number, or do they mint to order, some things like say a yearly set - well they know how many they sold last year so that's the target to bet next year.

will the majority of coins having some amount of mintage, the money maker coins are the unique coins, like mistakes and errors or anything out of the ordinary

I talked to a dealer and they attended a meeting BY THE ROYAL AUSTRALIA MINT just for dealers a few days ago, that's how they were able to purchase the rolls, and they had to stay for the whole meeting for that, and most people left. I don't know if the mint used a "special machine to roll the coins or not" or got someone else to do that, since I thought that the mint were not using the rolling machine anymore
anyway, I wasn't at the meeting so I cant be 100% sure
but yeah from the word going around that seems to be the gist

I always thought that the dealers don't get the sweet deals on the ballot coins

they probably get chubb or one of those mobs to roll the coins

I can't see why RAM couldn't have made these rolls available to Collectors instead of handing them out to the dealers so that they could have a feeding frenzy at the expense of the collectors.

Also some of the sellers on eBay have sold multiples of the Vic Cross copper coin,  It makes me wonder how they acquired more than one of these as they are supposed to be a one only ballot item.:dodgy:

Maybe the rolls are like those little gift bags that they give out as say for example, a fashion show expo. The attendees get something special and they can do with it what they want.

So - we are talking money here!! so - money gifts it is.

Which begs the question ... did the dealers get them for free??? highly unlikely I am sure!!  Anyways, if they are unique the collectors will be as you suggested in a frenzy with excitement at the rare chance of owning one !!!

I'm not so sure there will be any others. Given that the RAM has made 23m of the 2014 ANZAC coins, how likely is it that there'll be any more 2014 $1 MOR coins? I reckon it's pretty unlikely, but that's just my opinion.

Heat seal them into bank bags. I will be talking about this very topic at MNS in a couple weeks, and might take some piccies documenting exactly how I do them. Here's the pics I previously posted of the homebrew $2 rolls... http://fulvio.jovianprojects.com.au/coins/130815.RollSealing640/

Before any more dirt is thrown about can we wait for a response from the RAM.

Precisely. What a dumb assertion, based on what? The lack of a few words on the wrapper?

RAM produced the coins.
RAM owns rolling machines
RAM produces rolls of other coins
RAM handed out the rolls

Where in any of this is there any basis for saying they're not RAM rolls? They could have been plain paper, and still be RAM rolls. Just like the plain Armaguard rolls are Armaguard rolls even if they don't say so.

Heck, even in the unlikely event they were rolled by someone else, they're STILL RAM rolls, in the same way coins produced by foreign mints are still australian coins.

*shrug* It's UNLIKELY that the RAM rolled them.  They didn't roll the branded collector 20c / $1 rolls (like the Wills and Kate 20c rolls) but rather sent the wrappers and coins out to a third party.  I remember at the time of the issue of the Australian Day 50c rolls the RAM saying they didn't have the rolling machines to be able to do it themselves.  I'd very much doubt that situation has changed just to make a few hundred rolls to sweeten a deal with RAM distributors.  But what is important here isn't actually WHO rolled the coins but rather that these rolls are official RAM product.  Which they clearly ARE.

see I don't understand this attitude. is it a bad thing to want an asset you enjoy to appreciate in value or does everything need to reduce in value for you not to be considered greedy?
I spend hours looking at, sorting, grading, properly storing, learning about and sourcing coins many of which people believe have no value (eg the many hours I spending noodling change/notes at banks)
I do this because I enjoy it and after all is said and done I would like to pass on a collection of coins to my children that can set them up for life or provide a safety net if they need it.
I don't intend to leave them a collection of worthless shiny metal objects that I have wasted money on.

I'd go along with serial on this.

Let me give you an example that may just change your thinking...

You know I'm into Dogecoin. Somewhat of a fan you could say. Heck, I just put a ton of work into the Dogecoin Foundation, and for a few hours I *was* the foundation.

Now, a funny thing has been happening. Because of the accelerated mining schedule and some internal conflicts, no matter what we've been doing, the price has been falling pretty consistently for a couple of months. Now, everybody knows that in six months or so the mining will pretty much stop creating new coins, and all the work being done will increase demand.

But people are infused with doom and gloom, and are selling off at a loss, for bargain basement prices. Why? Because they see no value, and no prospects of value. So they're moving on elsewhere, be it Bitcoin, another altcoin, or completely out of the field.

Ultimately, the value of anything is completely a matter of desire for it. There is no intrinsic value. If everybody wants oil, the price will go up to the maximum level they are prepared to pay. The same goes for cryptocurrencies, precious metals, water, food, clean air and hugs. Well, maybe not hugs.

We collect little bits of paper and metal. We obsess about condition, which means the ones we value most are the ones which least perform their primary function. A proper coin is a used coin is a worn coin is a worthless coin. Conversely a perfect coin is an untouched coin is a completely worthless means of exchange, because using it devalues it in our eyes.

Why would anyone pay $100 for $20 worth of silver? But they do. Why would anyone pay tens of thousands for a penny? Or hundreds for a dollar?

These things have value because we say they do. Because we are prepared to pay more than the price printed or stamped on every one. And the harder something is to get, the more we'll pay.

In five years time, I KNOW my dogecoins will be worth more than I'm buying them for now. In five years time I also KNOW that almost any of the shinies I can buy from my friendly coin dealer will be worth less than I'd pay for them now. And you know that too.

So where's the incentive to buy this junk? Why do so many people do so? And why, when something truly unique comes along, even if its a piece of paper wrapped around a handful of coins, would that be any less desirable or worthy of discussion than anything else we talk about?

Note that I'm not arguing that greed is good. Because I don't think it is. But the desire for gain, in any currency, be it fiat, crypto, reputation, love, comfort or any other thing we crave, is not only natural, it is also a fundamental part of what makes us who we are. You can't deny such a basic instinct.

Why get rid of this thread?

Information is being exchanged for all to be educated.

Just because someone mentions that these rolls of coins are well over $100 per roll doesn't mean we are greedy.

Information is just being passed on and this thread should remain.

Any chance of this being recognised by McDonalds in the 2015 guide

If it appears in the RAM report it'll likely appear in Maccas.  PPH will include it in her (better) list of of dollar mintages once she has some concrete information on the mintage.

that is thee key point, if we can get that recognised it will give them long term potential rather than just be a quick flippers dream

I sent an email to the RAM and got the following reply/response:

QUOTE

The Royal Australian Mint did roll these coins in-house and made them available to attendees on the basis that they would be able to pay and take them upon participation in the forums.

The Contact Centre staff said you also rang to ask how many rolled coins were produced. The Royal Australian Mint prepared a sufficient amount to meet the forecasted demand. The final amount can't be disclosed as this number may vary depending on final demand.

I think that this response answers most of the questions.

Good work Bruce.  I don't advise buying these at high prices because if dealers sense there's a dollar to be made out of these the RAM will make more to meet their orders and the "limited" nature of the release is quite likely to become much less limited.

No, you do not need to. There will be no more provided.

http://www.thesandpit.net/images/RAM%20-%202014%20And%20Beyond%20Invite.pdf

Total number rolled was to the demand of people who attended the event in Melbourne on the Wednesday and Sydney on the Thursday. The RAM made this quite clear in the invite before the event and the talk at the event. In Melbourne, I saw about four to six boxes of rolls there for participants to pick up. Others would have been shipped directly to dealers premises (some interstate dealers had made the trip and others had arranged representatives).

Sorry I cannot talk about the future RAM releases as the information is currently under embargo.

By the way, all the rolls are heads-tails.

Well they are both made of artfully arranged sub-atomic particles so who can say :)  The email (IMHO) opens the door for the possibility for more of these to be made.  The RAM has done it before.  Although if they do it this time they'd want to be careful to only release the rolls through the dealer market and WELL after dealers who bought them at the product launch have sold their stocks.  If they are not very careful they could end up upsetting a lot of people.

No electrons were harmed in the making of this email (or page) although some were severely inconvenienced.

The RAM's track record is not good but they did promise that the rolls would not be available after the events the week before last.
Of course, the coins will eventually be released through security companies. These days the RAM appears to be releasing circulation coins in those little bags but some will eventually be rolled by the security companies.

Well I hope you are right.  I am advocating caution to those who are ponying up big dollars for these rolls.  I'd hate to see people sitting on $150 rolls and then we see another release of the same thing in a few months time.

To be honest though I advocate caution to anyone who pays multiples of issue price for any recently released mint product.

I have it from a good source that at least 2000 rolls have been released to 2 dealers with no more currently being considered.
Give it a couple of months and I think stock will dry out on ebay and Armaguard rolls will start to pop up from the "inside man" at Armaguard
but they wont be the same imho
1 mil is a low mintage no matter how you look at it but the rolls will be what makes it a good investment. look at the state series 50cent rolls for comparison

Not for Me mate, Kimmy sent me a rather nice coin that I recon will grade MS64/65 and I am more than happy with that.
Besides it was an unsolicited gift from a friend and when it comes back from PCGS I will put a wee sticker on it to say where I got it from :yahoo:
As all my Dollar coins range from Ch Unc- Gem, an MS 64/65 is a real contender for my collection and I have NO use for 20 of the buggers

You can't hide 200 rolls (4000 coins) in the house forever. You need to rent a store room like the scene from Breaking Bad.

yes you can
under the bed - neatly stacked in boxes / containers
in the back of the clothes cupboard - the deeper part that never gets used
behind the linen in the linen cupboard

I have a small neat roller doored book case - it is amazing how much can be stored in these - I have an ex government metal lock up one - looks nice enough and holds a heck of a lot of my junk
takes 2 men to bust it open if you have to ... when you lost the key ...

at the bottom of the kids laundry basket - if it's a teenager boy - they are safely hidden for oh, about 7 years
door stops - that would also work

ermm... where else?
not in the garage - careful there they often don't store well for long

actually Robbiegal is right.
coins rolls store real neatly in small spaces.
I have over 500 rolls hidden in the bedroom next to the hundreds of proof and mint sets.
its the granny bait silver dollar/1oz coins/masterpiece sets etc that take the most room per item

I couldn't find any stores that have them in stock for $35, cheapest I could find was $45. Knowing that rolled coin typically has a 2x face value premium I consider getting these rolls at "face value" is worth a shot that in years to come they "may" be worth a tidy sum???

Would rolls with the red mint wrapper command more than the armagaurd rolls we will eventually see???

If these rolls were done inhouse by RAM they would have had wrappers confirming the reason for the release!

Speak to three different people at RAM and you will get three different answers, even in writing!

I do not believe they have been wrapped inhouse as a conversation I had with the CEO Mc Diarmid recently he confirmed that the RAM no longer wraps inhouse due to quality control issues.
Mainly severe scratches on first and last coins in roll. The reason they were selling Girl Guide and other rolls at $30 was to allow for additional costs for external wrapping.

These are the same wrappers used in 2010 and 2011 $1 rolls wrapped by SecuriCor? Which I believe is a subsidiary of Toll.

RAM should have released these rolls in RAM wrappers but being stingy they have reduced their costs!

Lets see what happens when Abbot sellls the RAM!! Will probably be bought by Downies!  LOL!

*shrug* two or three different people have asked the RAM different ways and got the same answer.  The RAM rolled them in-house.  It's even shown publicly on their Facebook page for everyone to see.  Does it really matter anyway?  I would have thought a bigger issue with people hoarding this is that they seem to be available now for about a third of the price they were getting eBay just a week ago.

those RAM identified paper rolls were total crap and fell apart in transit & normal handling
they were real quality control shockers
that is most likely why the mint ditched that supplier

I sent my Australia Day 50c rolls back reply paid as they were so loose. They had trouble with those and sent lots back to be re-rolled. I assume then they'll be more and more bagmarked because of that.

Is the mint announcing mintage figures for this coin well before its released a potential price killer for the 2014 $1 MoR

From my limited experience and reading, mintage for coins is not released before the coin is issued for circulation usually atleast a 6 month delay from what I have seen, so if everyone knows that only 1 million of these are made means everyone will hang on to them knowing its a low year??

Where as the 2011 10c piece is a low mintage year but that figure wasn't known till 2012??? meaning most of if not all of the 2011 10c pieces went into circulation???

This issue is unique and designed to excite us.

That's exactly my point, the mintage for this coin is widely known well before distribution, which is unlike other coins with a few exceptions.

This then gives everyone notice of a low mintage and whats released gets hoarded, purple $2 coin comes to mind.

OK
I'll Fess Up, I bought a couple of these rolls and will be breaking them open to hunt for a high quality coin to get graded for my collection.
I figure that cracking them out now will give me a far higher chance of finding a nice coin Than cracking them out in 10-15 years time when the elements may have damaged the coins in the roll.
I imagine that these will be yet another "Hoarded"  coin and mid to high graded coins will be the Norm.
MS67 and above however would be a whole different kettle of fish I would think as most people Wont crack the rolls because of the value of the roll and the coins will slowly degrade in the paper over the years.
Our Ali/bronze coins are quite prone to tarnishing rapidly if not stored correctly, Just look at some of your dollar coins in the cardboard packaging supplied at the mint your own stand and see how they have already lost some of their Glory.
Title: RE: 2014 $20 roll of mob of roos
Post by: serial on July 22, 2014, 12:26:17 PM
I bought big time in on this one. I don't regret it either. I will be breaking a roll to find one or two to be graded as per trouts suggestion but the rest will be going long term storage with a couple maybe traded to defray the extra cost. the way I see it is I spend many hours searching for mint rolls at banks and that translates into time that could be spent on other things. time=money so the relatively small premium on face value is a good investment imho.
plus, like trout said, the condition goes downhill if not stored properly and not many people handle the rolls correctly. at least half will be lost due to break up/accidental damage and the information I have is the number of rolls made was only about 2500. we will see if they make more but I doubt it

Post by: SULLA on July 22, 2014, 03:47:10 PM
SERIAL what is "big time"?

According to my correspondence from the Mint there is no limit on the number of rolls being offered; the only consideration is demand!
Most dealers are quoting 5000 rolls but according to my correspondence with the RAM that number cannot be confirmed.

As most dealers have already sold out out, I suspect that more rolls may be offered by the RAM.

Yes Serial, in 2007 it was widely rumoured that the 2007 50 cent coin would have a very low mintage number of 1.8 million,so everyone bought up big on rolls only to find out a few months later that the actually mintage was 18 million.

my hunch is that the RAM is measuring the viability of producing unc year rolls again, but in 'limited edition' numbers so that they can increase profits

jeepers - didn't they sell them to the dealers for the standard $29.95 to start with?

they are $9.95 ahead to begin with on each roll

they may have given the dealers 'a sweetener' but there would be a fiscal rational behind that sugar coated mint roll

Just brought a roll of these for $30 from M.R. Roberts.  They are going to increase he price to $32 in a week or so when they send their magazine out.  Picked up a single for $2.50 as well - which they took from a mint roll.

If you still want to get some reasonably priced give them a ring or email them.  I think their postage is reasonable too.

I have just gone through 2 rolls of these and only found 1 coin worthy of grading.
Most of the coins had hits on the Queens cheek and some had hits on the big roo.
All the others will grade at MS64 ish
This one may get MS65-66.
Whoever rolled these didn't put too much care in the job.

I bought a couple of 2014 MOR rolls and thought might be a good idea to get a couple slabbed as suggested here. Otherwise I don't have any other at the moment. But early days. So just the couple so it's probably best go through a dealer? May be I should wait until I have a few.

I see that there are now rolls from armagaurd on ebay

armagaurd rolls (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2014-ONE-DOLLAR-MOB-OF-ROOS-SECURITY-ROLL-UNCIRCULATED-LOW-MINTAGE-/261555485572?pt=AU_Coins2&hash=item3ce5ebfb84)

Maybe this will reduce the price?

So if there was a million of these coins minted.
5,000 for Sydney "S" counterstamp
995,000 left, divide by 20 per roll = 49,750 rolls  LOL

The only thing with none mint rolls is that there can be anything in the middle of the roll and yes interest 50000 rolls is a fair chunk so a long way of low mintage in my book.

gee for brand new coins they shouldn't be so marked up so I take it they had a lot of the typical bag marks that are on the coins of today :( It's looking like 66 will be our new top of the pops with the poor quality the mint is releasing these day.

Feathers has some Awesome coins in his set registry because he makes the time and effort to hunt through many coins to find "The One" and he is bloody good at it.
I don't have the opportunity or ability to do what he does, I simply "Muddle Through" and hope for the best So good on him I hope he can find a 69 or70 :yahoo:

I just had a look at the pop reports and there is on graded at 67.
I think a 66 is a pretty good result considering the bagginess of these coins :good:

Title: RE: 2014 $20 roll of mob of roos

1. You cant get them in mint sets
2. The coins are highly baggy
3. Low mintage

So if you can get 66 or higher it has good long turn potential unless someone gets a run of 68+ coins
But I doubt will that will happen given the condition of the coins comming out of the mint rolls

I've gone through several rolls and my best was a 66. A colleague of mine did the same with his rolls in much larger quantity and his best were 66s as well. A 67 is tough. A 68 is unlikely in large numbers.

getting ANY AL/BR dollar coin in MS68 and above is extremely tough if you look at the pop reports for these coins.

When I was putting together a submission for PCGS the other day I came across a couple of 2014 MOR coins that I put away initially from a roll  and forgot about them.
They both look as good if not better than the MS66 coin I had graded, I guess I will find out in a few weeks

Once the market settled after the initial frenzy these rolls were  selling on average around the $60 mark. Over the last couple of weeks or so they have suddenly taken off again and very little seems to be going for under about $75 on Ebay and quite a few going in the $80's and above.

Hey trout curious how many rolls have you cracked open so far?

Just the one, I think I "Got Lucky" with the one and only roll :)
I have one of them already graded at MS66 from a batch of coins I sent away when the roll arrived at home.
When I crack a roll I always do it carefully and put each coin in a saflip, then I go through all the coins and try and pick out the "Gems".

When I went through this particular roll I was halfway through tagging, bagging and writing up a submission form.
When I came to add the 2014 MOR coins I couldn't find the little buggers ( If you have seen my desk and office you would understand why) so I went through the other coins and hurriedly picked out 3 to send away.
These came back MS64, MS65 and MS66.

I'm just hoping that my eye was in when I picked out the initial 2  coins that I sent away a week ago.
You never know until they are graded and hopefully one of them will come back MS67 :yahoo:
