I pay rent on one of my shops. The owner of the shop is also a customer. He came in yesterday and asked for a discount on future purchases. My reply was can I have a discount in my rent. He comes back at me with no as the rental income is how he makes a living. I then said we coin sales is how I make my living. He reply was that my situation was different....hmmm
What would your reply be?
Looks like you're about to get an increase in your rent :dodgy:

It's a tough position as you don't want to piss your landlord off even if he has a double standard.Only you can decide which way to go depending on how beneficial the extra discounted sales would be
I would've said the same thing, Business is Business, you both do it for a living, so I don't really understand how it is different, maybe give him a 0.1% discount next time. Funny old world
His income is secure so long as he has a renter. Yours depends on sales. If giving a discount doesn't result in increased sales, there's no advantage to either of you. If you can't make the rent, he loses out.

These days with the rise in internet trade and the peaking out of bricks and mortar outlets it might be a case of landlords needing to be nice to the tenants.
Walked through an old shopping arcade in Parramatta and the place was depressing, used to be where I purchased stamps 40 years ago, now 75% empty. I doubt the landlord is even covering council rates and insurance.
When it gets close to time to renew the lease just casually mention that you are thinking of going to an all online coin shop as a cost saving measure.

Uh how is it different? I know what I'd like to say to him. But I probably wouldn't.
In my short collecting life Ive found that when buying from coin shop you usually get coin cheaper than whats on tag. Whether its the dealer automatically saying "I can do that for" or asking yourself for a better price, like in everything we buy in life.
As long as you still make a profit I would go with the " I can do that for " approach.
wow! not that's not cool! I don't know what sort of relationship you have with him so I cant tell you how to respond but I am sure that you build a little wiggle room into your coins eg 5%?
if so just say he can have 5% of and never negotiate further with him. then constantly remind him that you are giving him a "discount" at your store and make him feel like he owes you
might come in handy one day.
on a side note is your online handle the same as your ebay acc? because I think i just bought something of you :)

Renting properties is NO DIFFERENT. Landlords make a margin above costs. For a landlord to suggest BigFella should be flexible and he shouldn't then it's nothing more than double standards. If he wasn't your landlord I'd be telling him to take a long walk off a short jetty.
"If he wasn't your landlord I'd be telling him to take a long walk off a short jetty. "
and that is the problem, bigfellani's business is closely intertwined with this guy so it restricts the manner in which he can deal with him.
bottom line is that it was inappropriate for the guy to ask in the 1st place! now he has put bigfellani in an uncomfortable position, a highly unethical thing to do!

I like Serial's approach. If he is not your landlord, would you give a discount to him with the view that he can potentially become a repeat customer? Make sure you emphasize you are doing him a favour.
OK he's an ass. But he is a customer. I wouldn't insult him with a 0.1% discount.

Agree with this 100%,it's forever going to leave a bad taste in ones mouth.
I don't see how the landlords position is any different to Bigfellani's at all.
He obviously has no idea of whats" FAIR ".
I have a good relationship with the shops I visit, to the point I can pic and choose, and its usually the first person who gets the coin in gets the sale >> in saying that, I know how things work, and shops sells new release coins at release pries, you cant expect them to give you a discount! tho if I bulk buy coins I know I still get a $ or two off from my favourite dealer, maybe cos they know I pay cash and it prob saves on eftpost transaction fees.
other coins I save a few dollars off are coins in 2x2s or separate, mostly "threepences" I don't think the guy ever charges the price tag, that's why I like the dude :)
haha don't think I haven't walked away from dealers at coin shows before, I have! I have picked out a few coins, thought I would be happy to pay cash if the dealer combines and gives a discount, and nothing! seriously!!! not even $1, I just walked away thinking you just lost a sale buddy for being a tight wad, I don't have to buy the coins, but that's just me, everyone knows they put prices up at a show
if the person is spending a certain amount, and its off coins that are not in retail packaging > not new release stuff, then it could help to give a discount on a basic coin, even off a cheap $10 coin, a $1 discount makes it seem like you are getting a deal, especially if its been sitting around for a while, but that's just me, I know I have sold coins at a loss before, but I have also bought coins at good prices too

I know its not different, and thank you for your tutorial on landlords and renting. He can't beat the landlord into a pulp, so my way was to do it smart. He makes out his doing landlord a favour but his really doing what he probably does to a lot of customers, and that's bargaining with them. You really don't want to get on the wrong side of landlord. As long as he still makes a profit of the swine.
