I know the variety catalogues only list 2 different date varieties for the '46 florin. I have a florin that doesn't appear to have either the common 6 or the scarce big 6. So is it possible that a 3rd type exists?
Check out ebay item 351077451316. It is in Unc grade and the gap between the top and the circle is too small for a normal 6 and too large for the big 6. I compared it in hand with a bunch of other '46s and it isn't the same. Opinions?
this site may help, http://www.triton.vg ( i don't know why it is not working ATM this is where I learnt about the 6 on the florin, and I have both types and they are not hard.
the 6 in the date has a large loop and a small loop
don't know much more than that >> coppied a pic

Tah for that, thought they archived all the old stuff.
The question re- date
That '46 appears to be an early strike on nice clean dies.
The Coin in question.

And my florin isn't the same as those 2 images, that is what is perplexing.
a picture speaks a thousand words
Thanks Rob.
In a normal 6 the 6 looks like an inverted 9, but mine has a fat 6, would that fatness be enough to make the gap appear small or was a different 6 punch used? Plus why is the 6 so fat?
Close ups of all 3 images.

Fred and neal did an article in this months CAB magazine on the 1946 florin where a big 6 variety displayed a dot between AL of AUSTRALIA. No dot between AL on the few I have, but did find a dot above the last A :yahoo:

That is a nice Big 6 florin. Have you considered getting it slabbed as a big 6? (I'm surprised that the '53 long denticle has had about 10 slabbed as such but they don't seem to have either slabbed any big 46s or is it a case that they have not yet recognized the variety? If the '26 sixpence with serif is now recognised then surely the big 6 would be recognised if requested?)
BTW there are now about a dozen known reverse dies of the big 6. They are all hard to get in above bullion grade.
It does seem odd that no big sixes have been slabbed to this point, but I know that PCGS use the Renniks Varieties catalogue as a reference, so assume it would be just a matter of submitting a coin as a big 6 variety to be attributed as such.
Looking forward to the follow up article and hopefully further info on the many reverse die varieties :good:
Maybe nobody has sent in a "Variety" submission with this coin yet?
:i_agree: Probably as simple as that
