Nice.!!
Yep,lookin good Trout !
You both need to take the pics on a slight angle to get the camera lens reflection out of the pics.
That should improve the pics too.
What sort of lighting are you both using?
if you have an SLR and know how to use it, you can take really good pics of coins without the flash if you have even neutral light and simply over expose the shot by 2 stops.

I used sunlight and a Tupperware container as a diffuser :)
Not the best pic in the world but it is a personal best for me on a Canberra florin .
I'll have another play around with the camera tomorrow.

An OTT light can be a good first buy as a light to take coin images with. And lots of times your missus will have one if she sews or does some sort of crafty hobby. You could just nick...errr borrow it.

Keep at it the end results are worth it.
My tip is, pick only nice looking coins to begin with.
An ugly looking coin no matter how well photographed
will allways be an ugly photo.

Thanks Mate.
I am happy with it as it shows the coin as it is .
Fantastic strike and damn near perfect reverse but the obverse is letting this one down with "cabinet wear" :dash1:
Anyway a three stepper with full lustre is a "Keeper" as far as I am concerned regardless of the unfortunate obverse :good:
the otte lights are good

I get mine at the fabric shop

My eyesight is at the stage where what I think is 'in focus' is not necessarily so.! I will quite often take 50 images of the same coin only to delete 49 and then decide the final one is pretty sad too.!! But at least this is possible with digital photography, beats the old 10 day wait to receive the pics back from the chemist .!!:beg:
trout they are getting better you just have to wait for a sunny day like me. weather over here is not helping
rob you seem to be getting to much reflection off the coin. it would seem that your light source is the issue here. what do you use?

Is that a tiny clip on the 1964 coin?
they are nice!
was the 64 in plastic/2x2?
and I would think that looks like a small clip

You need to slow your shutter down a bit, those are underexposed. But SOOOOOOOO much better than the ones taken outside in the sun.

I'm down to ISO 100 and that is all my Camera can do :cray:
Maybe its time to bite the bullet and get a real Camera with a proper lenses , stand and all the fruit :)

No, that's not shutter speed, that's film sensitivity emulation. Do you control the shutter speed or F-Stop at all? Or do you leave all of that on automatic? You could try changing to ISO200 see if you get any loss of detail (but you'll get brighter images).
EDIT
I've just had a look at the EXIF data on the image of the jersey coin. It's taken at f3.4 and 1/90 second with an exposure compensation of -0.3 step. Get rid of the exposure compensation to begin with, that's making the images darker. Even set it to +0.3 or +0.6. If your camera has shutter priority mode you could set it to 1/60 and hope the camera keeps the F3.4 aperture. Or if it has full manual set it to F3.4 and change the shutter speed to 1/60.
I have a setting for image quality that has 2 options, Fine and Normal .
No F stop setting.
The Camera I have at the moment is a "Point and Shoot" jobbie that cost me less than $300.
I imagine that I don't have the additional settings and capabilities with this unit.

Fuji Finepix T200 has no aperture or shutter priority or manual mode. Bugger. Fiddle with the exposure compensation then and perhaps try it on ISO200.

Not to worry, the images are an order of magnitude better than what you were taking a week ago.

Thanks Mate I really appreciate that coming from you.:yahoo:
I will muck about more with my "Volksie" a bit and get off my "L" plates then I am seriously thinking of getting a decent unit.
I am really enjoying this aspect of the hobby and I love learning new stuff, So when I have "Upgraded" my brain I will have to do the same with my tools :)

Our old Nikon point and shoot was $400 or so a few years back and that does everything you could think of. It took perfectly acceptable images.

your taking the pictures at a slight angle?
you should try to be above the coin
bring the light source closer as well
but that is better than the previous one
Here's a tough one to image. It's got lovely toning and you can only get it to "pop" when the coin is tilted. So I tilt it adjust the focus so that the middle of the medal is in focus and the top and bottom is always slightly out of focus. Even when I set the F stop to F19 or F22. I thought at that level the focal plane would be wide enough to get the whole thing in focus. But no. Anyone got any suggestions?

This coin is the color of Dark chocolate in hand.
When I take a pic directly above it you can hardly see the details on it.

The depth of field needs to be increased(Obvious)
Increase the distance lens to coin, you will lose the coin filling
the sensor but the DoF will increase, maybe enough?
From what I have observed with my lens +25mm = .3mm increase DoF.

Yes, I already tried that thinking that it would make a bit of difference (and it did). There's about 6 inches of travel left that I can try. Will take another shot a bit later today.

That would have to be the longest post I have ever seen :)
The pics are pretty good considering they are slabbed or in 2x2s.
threepences (I do not grade)
34 over date - top loop maybe, need a clearer pic +$45 -$70
42 plain $8 - $15
54 (die cracks) A's - ($1- $3 for any type of basic die crack)
price is only what I used to pay for scrappy ones years ago, yours are probably better than mine
die you purchase them cheaper ;)
*did, wow can't spell, wrong key
Got an Ott-Lite today after seeing them for under $60 on eBay the other day and seeing good recommendations from other users.
Set the camera's White balance to Auto, and it done the rest.
A little bit overexposed, but I'll work it out.

With your D200 go full manual.
Set Aperture to F11
Shutter to 1/40th
ISO setting 400(Max)
Less would be better but you would need
to reduce shutter speed to compensate.
A 200 ISO setting would have you shooting at 1/20th.

Your little Olympus looks pretty competent
but a quick squiz at some of the settings being selected,
the little thing is making some poor decisions.
The point and shoots don't perform all that well
trying to focus through 2X2 Flips (and slabs).
Sacrifice the flip and Photograph the coin.

Thanks Fordprefect,
I tried those settings and they worked well. I could remove the -1.0 adjustment I had set, as I had it in aperture mode on F11 and let it work the shutter speed out itself.
I can probably shoot at 200 ISO as I have the camera on a copy stand.

Any sugestions to improve quality ?

There are DSLR users out there that would be
happy if their images were as good as your getting.
The slight "Fuzzy" focus could be camera movement when
you hit the shutter button.
Try using the the self timer to activate shutter release.
Depth of field also can effect apparent not so crisp focus.
Within your camera's Program Modes see if you have an
Aperture priority Mode.
If yes, set aperture to F8 or higher if available.
Otherwise keep producing what you currently are shooting,
or take the next step into DSLR+Macro Lens land.

Thanks for the tips.
I see now that its got:
Maximum aperture f/3.5 to f/5.0
Self-timer for delayed shutter release.
White balance (color) adjustment.
Will give them a go and see if I can do any better.
Ok
Looking around for a new camera setup.
What are the speccs that I will have to look for eg how many megapics , lens size etc and which brands are good?
How does this one stack up?

For coin photography it is not in the right state.
Good bit of gear for general snapping though.
You should probably start a new thread
in the General Chat forum,
The Canon V Nikon will then begin.
here's the sony specs

The bottom pic is the most realistic :good:
I posted earlier in this thread with some problems getting a tilted coin in focus. I've hit on a new solution called "focus stacking". Basically this means taking several images of the item with the focus point on different planes and then using some software to combine the image to get a single in-focus image. I'm fairly happy with the results. Below you can see IMAGE 1 which is focused on the top of the medal, IMAGE 2 which is focused on the middle of the medal, and IMAGE 3 which is focused on the bottom. The final result is at the bottom.
IMAGE 1 (top focus)

I bet it is. I should read the manual on this beast and see if it does it.
mine is called 3D in the setting selector
they look ok too - I think maybe I should try taking one as I haven't used it for ages
a couple that I just played around with
not sure if they are all that spectacular
the second one is extremely glossy so it came up ok really
it takes just one overlay photo - not 2 & I had to line it up manually which might take some more practice

the light is reflecting of the surface
Maybe stop the lens down (that is bigger F number) a little could help. Also try experimenting with diffusing your lights a little -a front cover cut from a translucent milk bottle or similar could be a good "Heath Robinson" experiment. Don't melt the plastic though!
Just mucking about with it at the moment .
I will get serious when I change to the TAMRON SP AF 90mm f/2.8 F2.8 DI MACRO 1:1 Lens :ok:
It left Perth today so I should have it tomorrow :)
It is a bit weird looking through a view finder instead of just looking on the screen when I shoot a pic.

Each to their own Mate, I personally couldn't live the "Battery Hen" existence of the City.
When I left the UK I was living in London which would make Perth look like a small country town and I don't miss it one iota :)
I live about 30k's out of Geraldton which has good health care (Not that I need it) and all the shops etc. that most people would need ( NO coin stores though) :dash1:
I never need to lock up the house or worry about noise or unsocial people annoying me.
My nearest neighbour is 7k's away so no problem having a "Shin Dig" here :)
YES there are some advantages living in the City But not enough to tempt me to move there.

A bit dark and the details are hard to see But what a lovely coin.

Perzacerly
Lighting is fine:
ISO is fine:
Increase Aperture to F11, maybe even F16.
This will enhance the Depth of Field which in
turn will allow the focus and sharpness to increase.
(Still pay attention to physical focus)
Shutter speed will be halved at least.
Try a combination of
Aperture F11
Shutter 1/120 - 1/100
or
Aperture F16
Shutter 1/60

background and what setting the camera is on makes a difference, the second one is focusing on the background
darker backgrounds absorb light while light ones reflect it (depending on how much light you are using make a difference too with reflection on a surface)
2nd thing is textured backgrounds can make a camera focus on that, I was using felt to absorb reflection but the new camera want to zoom in on that instead of the coin :p
OK mucked about with the manual setting on the white balance and focussed manually.
The trouble I am having is what I see on the rear lcd screen is NOT what the image will look like.
haha I have the same too, don't rely on the screen no matter what camera, all I can be sure of if the screen is blurry then the picture is too.
you just have to play around and see what works for you.
I really like the zoom or macro setting, that captures the detail for small things, but when I want to do larger stuff I have found that the auto detect is doing pretty good.
my camera also has scene select for brighter colours, haha it under scene - cuisine - for still life photography, vividly reproduces colours of fruit, vegetables, flowers etc.
your doing great, your coin is in focus and the colour is showing up nicely
might want to have a play with a black background if you can, cos dude that blue is out there ;)
the blue looks good :P

No point in trying to make an imperfect coin look perfect via Photoshop.
A coin is what it is and the best you can do is to take an image that looks like the coin "In hand"
The intention of taking an image of a coin is to represent it for what it is "Warts and All" I can't see the point of Fluffing and buffing a coin pic quite honestly.
oh no, I have never use photoshop edits
the only edits I use are to crop and for this forum I 'edit' the photo to a third of the mps that it will be on my computer, so they tend to look a little fuzzy when posted here
sometimes I might use the auto adjust in the program but that just fiddles with the picture colours/contrast
I usually hold the coin in my hand and try to make sure that it matches with the photo on the screen
a lot of these new coins have blazing colours but they have the usual perth 'water stains etc'
this coin looks pretty well exactly the same in the hand but the water spots definitely appear darker in photos
but you only have to tilt the camera a bit and the colours that it pics up can be lighter or almost not at all
I took these photos with my Olympus, I have started to practice using the son's Nikon - it seems to take photos very true to what my eye sees
(http://i1285.photobucket.com/albums/a585/auntyrobbs/P8250328_zpsc6ea1862.jpg)(http://i1285.photobucket.com/albums/a585/auntyrobbs/P8250330_zps219cd178.jpg)
then I took these photos with the Nikon - true colour shows immediately, it is really nice to use and I hope to get better at it
this coin is still in the holder but pretty well looks exact - maybe little 'brighter' in the hand (//%5Bimg%5Dhttp://i1285.photobucket.com/albums/a585/auntyrobbs/DSC_08732-Copy_zps278ba123.jpg)[/img](http://i1285.photobucket.com/albums/a585/auntyrobbs/DSC_08742-Copy_zps027aba40.jpg)

did you go to a camera shop for the set-up OMF?
I did have a look around some shops dick smith, office works and a number of specialist photography shops but ended up buying the camera and lens from a distributer called Digital World International and got the camera around $200 cheaper than the other places and the lens around $100 cheaper. The stand I purchased for $184.53 from a local distributer with free postage (they are really bulky so postage costs are quite expensive which was $110 cheaper than the other distributor of them. The Ott lights I picked up new of ebay for $59 a pop with free shipping. Retail on these are around $120. Lesson I learnt is if you look really hard you can save an absolute ton of money.

I have stared using his Nikon V1 - it is entry level but I am having loads of fun learning to use it (he was really lucky and got it as a run sale from Dick Smith for $250 earlier this year). He has recommended a $500 lens for macro shots though!
i'd like to try one of those camera stands, I think it would improve my photos as well
I look forward to seeing your photos!!
Thanks I can't wait to test out the set up by the way would you like me to PM you the supplier of the copy stand?
This is my current set up

I looks great trout and the pictures you get from it are awesome. That's why I got one similar.
hey Trout
do you reckon that tripod is good for holding the camera ?

I recon that tripod is robust enough to mount an M60 on :diablo::good:
I can take 20 images of slabbed similar coins without having to even check the focus , nothing moves with this puppy :)
cool
I think that my son got one recently I might ask sweetly for a loan ....
Nice setup if I could afford a similar one.
Hi Trout & fellow photographers!!
I have a tripod that I've had for years to look at the stars at night
So we took the legs right down to the shortest length they go (apx 58 cms with camera attached) & set up the camera with 2 otte lights. My tripod has 4 legs including the centre support leg thingss
I will get better plus the son is recommending a Nikon macro lens apx $500 , so we will look out for a second hand one.
Bit tricky as I am so used to holding the camera for my photos
but took quite a few fairly good shots. I did like getting straight over the coin AND without having to stop breathing when I take the photo!!

Nice sharp images RG and the colour looks great :yahoo:
ta
it is a gorgus coin that was said to have been taken from a mint roll years ago
it has a few sisters in my album as well but the guy who i bought them off on ebay had STAPLES in the page that he stapled when he posted, some coins came loose = some very ruined unc coins
I never have a staples anywhere near a coin now, even in my packaging when I sell something

Don't worry mate I got it over the line as I will be using it for a little venture of mine because I couldn't justify it for just my coins, Now just have to explain to my parents how much I spent on the set up :P Don't know how that is going to go
The OTT lights arrived Friday and just got around to setting them up now. I must say first impressions of it are good but lets see how it goes under the camera.
Just got the camera today and managed to take some photos. Here is what I managed to get so far. (the picture was taken freehand)
Sorry guys and gals give me a little. It doesn't want to upload my photo. Found the issue the original photo was 4.2mb so a tad over the 200kb limit. It has been scaled down a lot to fit in this post.
Click on the photo and you will get a much bigger and better photo

Ya gotta take the lens cover off Mate :laugh2: :)
Just funning Mate, You have to resize the images .
I normally make them 600 x 600 pixels :ok:
Haha what is this lens you speak of? :P jokes
Resized the photo to 875x 875 pixels
Frankly I am very happy with my first off shot
Nicely done Mate :good:
Try using the gallery on this site and then use the link to put the pic on your post.
That way you get full sized images instead of thumbnails :)
At least it is a start OMF.
Who is this Frank Lee you speak of? Be he a member? A brother of Bing or Shirl perhaps? (Jokes x worse^10).
Good pic OMF for your first go with a new machine.
For a "Freehand" shot it is a bloody good effort Mate, no way in the world can I hold a camera steady enough for that :good:
Did you use the auto focus or did you focus manually with the Tamron lens for that shot ?
great start OMF
it is a head spin to get the hang of a new camera and the associated bizzo that goes with it
I load mine up to photobucket and copy the link and paste it here, have never used the galley here
Quotehave never used the galley here
It is AWSOME Robbie give it a whorl :good:
Thanks everyone and trout I manually focused it and did all the settings manually. It is really hard to hold a camera steady, manually focus it and take a photo at the same time by the way. I managed to find an old tripod we had and I will give some photos a shot tomorrow with it.

Keep on Trukkin Mate, Where there is a will there is a way.
It is nice to have some decent equipment and it is FUN learning how to use all the new settings and stuff.
I'm still trying to get the best out of my gear, a bit like "Pantine" It wont happen overnight but it WILL happen :)
I have taken my coin photos for the last decade without a tripod OMF
just keep your arms really still as you hold the camera - and stop breathing when you are about to take the photo
works for me
I only starting trying out the tripod last week and it's damn hard to get that system of taking photos working as well
ps
when you press the shutter half way down the camera will auto focus and correct any dodgy focus
set it on electronic shutter speed ( I have a Nikon as well - just a lesser version I think)
Yeah I think the best way would be to put a timer on the camera while using it with a tripod.

I don't think you will have any dramas when finally you get your copy stand :)
Thanks and hopefully the pictures only get better from here :)
Here are a few that I have taken today (this will be updated over the day)

The last one is the same quarter just different lighting.
That's a good start OMF :read:
The white balance in your camera is out by miles.
Do a Manual White Balance Setup using the
light setup you intend to use for your images.
A plain white sheet of A4 copy paper as reference.
If in doubt, shock horror, read your user manual.
The White Balance Must be correct before
you can go forward and the Auto and various in camera
presets don't usually work too well with coins.
Thanks fordie I will mess around a bit more with the white balance. On the presets I have customised the settings including aperture, shutter speed, quality settings etc.
If you shoot in RAW, one of the good things is, is that you can change the white balance using software.
oh so that it the secret
all of you guys are taking your photos in the RAW
no wonder the coin photos always look so hot
ha ha
ps I think that the RAW pics can't up load to photobucket
When you have a RAW picture cropped, sized, whatever to what you want then you can save it as a jpeg/jpg/png/gif file which will considerably reduce the file size. I usually use jpg and select "High quality/Low compression" save option in my picture software. The more compression, the more fine detail may be degraded in the end result.
Quotetaking your photos in the RAW
Beware of mirror like coins -your picture might show unwanted artifacts! :laughingneqw::laughingneqw:
ha ha
i'll make sure to take a closer look in future!!
I shoot with Jpeg (fine) but I will try out the RAW one? Also can't seem to get white balance right. I tried the paper trick but the camera didn't want any of it and to set it manually means you get a million possible outcomes :P
I tried the white paper too , best I could get was grey . ,, kel ,,
Fordie could you tell me which photos look like the white balance is out. The first Lincoln cent looks very sharp and attractive the other photos however I can understand in terms of the white balance.
The Quarters and Dimes are all out of wack,
which also means the Cent's are too,
but in isolation very hard to pick.
The Blue that is apparent on the silvers,
would intensify the red in the cents.
The importance of correct white balance in camera
is not just the elimination of an unwanted colour cast.
Get the white balance wrong in camera and every
other colour captured will also be wrong and post processing
won't fix the original error.
As for using "Raw Format" Don't until you get the basics.
White Balance (For each Lighting Set-Up)
Then, All equally important :-
Camera Parallel and 90d to coin
Light Position
Aperture Setting
Focus
Okay thanks fordprefect. Limits the options somewhat in terms of the palet choices however need to figure out which white balance option to use.
just play around with the camera
I have always found that when the white balance has the white paper appearing white, then my coin is way way over exposed so that advice has never worked for me
just play around with the auto settings until you get more comfortable with the device
that is what I am doing with the son's camera & I am getting some great photos
this coin is on white paper but if the paper showed up as white then my coin would be really over exposed, so I settle for the grey looking tone to capture colours etc
(http://i1285.photobucket.com/albums/a585/auntyrobbs/DSC_1947-tile_zps98c3c031.jpg)
ps here are two pictures
the first has the white balance correct and the second has the darker background - this is what the guys are talking about
(http://i1285.photobucket.com/albums/a585/auntyrobbs/DSC_0809-tile_zps68de4c18.jpg)
I seem to remember other people talking about using an 18% grey card instead of white, for setting the white balance. Anyone know more about this?
Just picked up my copystand yesterday it is absolutely massive. Seriously it is a bit taller than half a person and made of steel. Anyway it comes with a grey baseboard so white balance shouldn't be an issue anymore. Going to take some photos tonight and can't wait :D

You can do that. Or use a white page that has black printing on it. Both seem to work fairly well.
Gave it a go with the white balance adjustments and the copystand. Here is the best one I managed out of the set pretty happy with it to be honest.

Just came across this article on PCGS
Glamor shots for your pcgs slabs (http://www.pcgs.com/news/glamor-shots-for-your-pcgs-slabs)
Gradient shading background is sexy.
I got these and thought I would show them. tried to get the colours but it is hard

After months of putting it off, I finally bought a macro lens. The challenge is getting the camera square as the camera / lens weigh a bit and the copystand probably wasn't built for full size D-slrs

One of the best pictures I've seen of a staple!
Nah, seriously, looking good!
Rob,
Use a spirit level, east west and north south,
on the back of camera.
Then lock the camera up tight.
Dosn't hurt to check it periodicaly also.

I LOVE your desk Fordie :yahoo:
It looks a lot like mine.
A tidy workshop = nothing much happening :)
Double adapters in power boards is a no no in my house. FULL STOP. Too darn dangerous any time.
