Title: Chinese Coins from long ago.
Post by: Coiny Chris on June 03, 2014, 05:03:40 PM
Hello,

Over 30 years ago I did a trip, and bought some old Chinese Coins. Now it is a souvenir, ( the set ) although I would like them to be real. Any thoughts on what to look for ? At the time I hoped rather than expected they were real.

Regards Chris

I had some Chinese coins, but sent them over to the West Coast, as they were too difficult to identify & simply did not appeal to me.  I still have a couple that I could identify.

I have seen these "sets" of old Chinese cash coins made up using genuine coins. I have also seen them made up using replicas. I'm afraid we'll need to see pics, preferably of a closeup of both sides of at least one of the coins.

Hello,

I will try to get some Pics and Post them after work today. I had my doubts when I bought them, buy they didnt cost much. All have a square center hole, and some look very " rustic " There could even be a few real and some fake to make up the numbers. Tumble them in a washing machine, then bury them with some vinegar in the soil, dig up at different times over a few months. That is what I would do, cheap and nothing high Tech. The Chinese have been faking things for years, even animals. When the Platypus was first discovered, it was thought to be a Chinese fake.

Hello,

I hope the attachment works. I have not opened them, but may later. I am after opinions, and hope that at least some are real.

Hello,

I got the Coins for a good price, and put them away. 30 years ago there was no internet or Ebay, and if old Coins were found I imagine that they would be worth more to sell to a tourist than scrap / face value. The oldest looks to be far too good for the age, but I remember the trip and some good adventures. Now as for the Possum, you are not meant to be able to see anything other than the Coins. Anyway, it was in a Hut we rode to on our MTB's a while ago. Westermans at the base of the ACT. I reckon he looks like Yoda playing air guitar. I roam around a bit and like to take wildlife / landscape Pics.

Fortunately I have a friend in China who collects coins. He helped me to identify them.

Coiny Chris, check out this website, it may be of assistance to you.

Hello,

Thanks for the link, I will see how I go. At least I will know if they are correct for the period they represent.

A J, I hope I didn't offend you, I didn't realize all the Pics were able to be seen. I thought only the one I linked. Since you were nice enough to Post the Pic, I removed the link. ( I would have had a peek if the situation was reversed ! ) I had been trying to get a good Possum Pic for ages, all I ever got was a furry backside up a tree with not much light from the flash. I have some IMO good Pics and video of Lyrebirds and Platy's. Some of Echidna's also, a touch of irony given they are all on Aussie Coins. Now for some trivia, the Aus. Coat of arms has a Skippy and Emu, both animals cant walk backwards.

Regards Chris

Hi Chris,

Offend me, no no not at all mate it's all good but I thought as much as I have done the same and I had a look as the possum pic because it flicked up when I hit the link and me being me just had to suss it out :blush2: But mate it cracked me up so much I near fell of me chair as I have seen them like that when they're cornered and man can they fight and the bloody noise (when grabbed by the tail) but yeah I thought you might not want others to see so I pinched ya pic sorry as it's easier for people to see so all good and takes a lot more than that to offend me mate :friends:

How do they fight if they can't walk backward  but yeah I can't speak for other but I'd love to see them so if you wouldn't mind putting a post in the chat and you might be surprised what else gets put up :good:

My initial reaction on seeing the coins is yes, they appear to be genuine. One thing that gives me hope that they are genuine is that the coins are all different sizes and colours; an obvious giveaway that certain other sets are fakes is that all the coins are suspiciously alike in size and appearance.

As far as I can tell, they also appear to be identified correctly. Some of the coins (the bottom-left three) have been placed into the holder back-to-front, showing the mint-name rather than the Imperial era-name so cannot confirm those ones. But the others I can see and appear to be correct. Of course, if you want to know the mint-names, you'll have to take them all out to see the other side.

Keeping them in the set does not add to their value, but does not detract from it either. The value in any case is not likely to be high; the coins typically sell for 50 cents to $2 each around here. So if the set has sentimental value for you, you may as well keep it as-is.

Sapyx,

Thanks for the reply, sort of what I thought / was hoping for. I may just leave them as-is.
