Post by: trout on November 09, 2012, 03:29:33 PM

I have a few US coins but prefer the canadian coins seeing as my world collection centres around british monarchs.

The similarity in the obverses is what started me off on Canadian coins.
The reverse on the 50 cent coins has a great coat of arms as well.
Also the fact that a great deal of their coins are in great shape compared to our coins of the same era and you don’t need to sell a kidney to get them:good:

I collect US dollars and have a collection of Canadian 25 cent coins.

Other than that I do not collect US or Canadian coins.

I collect both Canada and US, but at present that part of my collecting is in limbo as I seem to have too many other irons in the fire at present.

This is what I collect in addition to Aussie coins, but not necessarily in the order they appear:

Foreign Collections: NZ, UK, Eire, PNG, Fiji, Canada, USA.
Themed Coin Collections:Birds, Knights, Dragons, Turtles, Primates, coins dated 1943, Tiny Coins 17mm and under.

I used to gather odd shaped coins as well and also coins with any type of cat on them, plus some Pacific Island Countries, Samoa, Solomon Islands, New Caledonia & Vanuatu but I'm not very serious about these, but I haven't bothered with them for quite some time now and will not be adding to them.

I myself am struggling to keep pace with what I am working on at the moment.

I have a (very) few US coins.  I have a lot more Canadian coins but they are all mostly dollars from the mid 1950's to the mid 1970's.  I must profess a weakness to the wildly toned commemorative dollars of the early 1970's.

I am sooo glad most of the Aussies don’t covet toned coins.
A great deal of the "Fabulously toned" coins I have seen from the US AND Canada is a result of "Artificial toning either via heat, bad storage (deliberate) or even "Paint on toning".
To me a naturally toned coin is a beautiful thing, because it is a fleeting moment in the life of a coin, not unlike a beautiful flower.
It will (for silver) turn black and nasty eventually.
To see these coins that naturally display the beautiful gold, blue and purple highlights is a wonderful thing.
I believe that our descendants or future collectors would want us to ensure that the coins we have at the moment are cared for and not defaced just to make a few Bucks

I collect U.S and Canada as part of my world collection. The Lincoln cents is where I started and I now have nearly a full collection of every year from every mint. Just need 1914D and 1931S. I have a few spares, so I will e-mail you a list, to see if there are any you need.

I have fair collection of US and Canadian coins. I have a near complete set of US 1 cent, near complete proofs and mint sets going back to the mid sixties, sets of rolls of various denominations.  The Canadian coins are mainly a set of 1 and 5 cent pieces. I have all the State 25c and have started a collection of the ATB coins, including rolls and silver. The US coins are relatively cheap to gain a complete set.

i like the old buffalo's and indian heads we have 2 of each that came in bundles but other than that have not brought any.
i dont mind the toned coins that are naturally toned over time, i have a few black ones that do stand out to my eye and a few that are just plain ugly black.

I'm a fan of George Kruger-Gray's work, especially coats of arms so the Canadian 50c is very appealing. This 1946 example is one of the few slabbed coins I have, I really liked the toning on this one.

The Canadian 50 cents are my favourite foreign coin, Great design and a decent sized chunky coin.
I have a complete date set from 1937-2012.
The Kennedy halves are also a nice set and not too hard to complete.
I have completed my Jefferson Nickels and have a heap of spares if anyone needs them :good:

I have the 50 State Quarters program, from 1999 to 2009 both P&D, a complete set.  All Bunc from mint rolls or sets which  are great coins.

Plus I'm working on the U.S Presidential one dollar coins both P&D from 2007 to the present, also Bunc from rolls or sets.

The Sacagawea & her infant son dollar coins from 2000 up to the present both P&D from rolls or sets. Great coins

The Washington Quarters America's National Parks from 2010 up to 2021
both P&D Bunc from rolls or sets. These are as good as the State Quarters

They are all in Dansco Supreme albums which have a brief description of each coin & are very well presented.

I now only have to buy one each of the Mint annual sets P&D to keep up to date.

The US mint coins don't have the bag marks that our coins have plus the detail is so much better.
Oh,, & they are a lot cheaper.

The silver Canadian 50 cents do tone beautifully.
Capturing the toning on a coin is beyond my capabilities.
This is the best I can do at the moment.

I have an almost complete collection of mint set coins going back to the early sixties.  The proof sets are coming along well to.
I agree the cost of the US coins are cheap compared to the Australian, and they are vastly superior in quality.

I'm sort of sorry that I did not get the proof coins as well because the dansco with proof coin just great but at the time it was a matter of cost & now it would be way to expensive to get the proof of each coin. o I can live with what I've got.

I buy mine directly from the US Mint.  The only problem is with delivery. They want a physical address and won't deliver to a PO Box.

If you want US Rolls, I purchase mine from Jeff Miller. Ee is very reliable.

It's funny how the Americans refuse to let go of the Dollar bill.
The US Gov has been trying to get the population to except the coins but there just seems to be some block about giving up their green back.
The change over here in 1984 went smoothly,

http://www.coinsofamerica.com/blog/coin-collecting/dollar-bills-give-coins/

But maybe the Gov is going to get serious & the population might not have any choice in the matter.

But maybe the Gov is going to get serious & the population might not have any choice in the matter.

I was living in the US when the Susan B. Anthony dollar coin came out, they were nicknamed the Carter quarter since similar in size and the same colour.  The smaller dollar coin was nice and machines would actually take them better than dollar notes.

At that time, they should have done the following:

Made the coin a different colour like the Native American dollar (which is a better design than the SBA dollar), drop the dollar bill and the cent.

When I worked in retail, almost all of the cash drawers had 4 slots for notes (ones, fives, tens, and twenties)  and 4 places for coins (quarters, dimes, nickels, and cents).

So no place to put the two dollar bill, half dollar, or dollar coin.  Since we did not keep twenties in the cash drawer, we used that spot for the rare time we got in a two dollar bill, half dollar, dollar coin, or foreign coin (like a Canadian coin or one from the Bahamas).

The paper lobby is very strong in the US, so I doubt the change will happen anytime soon despite the number of dollar coins sitting in vaults.

Remember the half dollar is still minted, but not for circulation.

Ken

It's kinda good, & kinda bad, that you have to wait until June to be able to buy this year's uncirculated coin sets from the US Mint.
Not like our guys that are selling next years issue's two months before the end of the year.
There's just something a bit funny about buying next years coins this year, just seems a bit odd to me.
just my opinion.
Title: RE: Canadian and US coins
Post by: ausjack on May 09, 2013, 02:14:53 PM
No I think it's a bit odd as well and this might explain how we end up with error sets, the best one's are the one with different years in them..what are they on down there :scratch_one-s_head:

Eg from rennik's,
just UNC sets with date errors
86 with 85 10 cent
94 baby with 93 $2 coin
2001 with 2000 $2 coin (1 known)
proof set
91 with 90 10 cent
96 with 95 5 cent
06 with 05 $1
so it's not like it has only happened once so I have to ask why..and there could be more that haven't been found yet :)

I'm a fan of the Canadian pre-decimals, but the US 3 cent coin has to be one of my favourites. It's a shame that it didn't make it into full circulation.

I have started to collect the Barber Liberty head quarter dollars. Nice looking coin and not too expensive to develop a good type set.

I think I registered for this site last October. I'll be here regularly now. I'm in the U S and started to collect Canadian coins many, many snows ago when my buddies always exclaimed, "Why do you collect THAT stuff?" It's evident now. To me the Canadian 1967 P L (it's called 'Proof Like') set is one of the greatest sets ever minted with the $1-Goose, 50c-Wolf, 25c-Bobcat, 10c-Mackeral, 5c-Rabbit, and the cent-Dove.....a little bit of water, land, and air.

One of my best friends spent 6 months studying in Seattle followed by another 3 months road tripping across the states. Throughout those 9 months, she strived to get every state quarter for me as my 'souvenir'. She was five short but then another close friend got two more, so I'm three short. Probably end up buying them from ebay. Also got a 1979 Sacagewea dollar and a Presidential dollar.

Also have a selection of coloured Canadian quarters as well from the 2nd friend I mentioned's trip to Canada and US over the last Xmas period.

No sunlight here today RG

This is our weather warning :ok:

This includes people in, near or between the following towns: Northampton, Geraldton, Jurien Bay, Dalwallinu, York, Narrogin, Bunbury, Busselton, Bridgetown, Margaret River, Mandurah and the Perth Metropolitan area.

Weather Situation

At 3:30pm a cold front lies just off the west coast with an associated deep low to the south of the state. The front will move across the region this afternoon and evening and the deep low will move towards the southern coastline towards sunrise on Saturday.

This system is likely to produce high sustained winds and frequent squalls with showers and thunderstorms.

Conditions are expected to ease towards midnight as the front moves inland and weakens but as the deep low approaches the south coast, showers and thunderstorms are again likely to produce WIDESPREAD DAMAGING WINDS to 110 kilometres per hour that could result in DAMAGE TO HOMES AND PROPERTY over an area southwest of a line Gingin to York to Walpole between 4:00am and 10:00am.

Small hail is also possible with thunderstorms.

Large swells will lead to DANGEROUS SURF CONDITIONS which could cause significant beach erosion along the west coast south of Kalbarri.

A wind gust of 98 kilometres per hour has been reported from Bickley at 2:03pm.

A wind gust of 98 kilometres per hour has been reported from Cape Leeuwin at 8:35am.

Nice additions Steve :good:

I have a collection of Canadian halves and Kennedy halves and every year I have to hunt down the issues for that year .
The Canadian ones are the hardest as they are not issued for circulation :dash1:

Which Canadian halves?  There's a fine silver proof, a base proof, a specimen, an uncirculated, and the occasional commemorative, all but the last only issued in sets.  The uncirculated is also in collector rolls.  The rolls are offered each year to Masters Club members and usually sell out to them before they can be offered to the public.  Although all the sets haven't yet been affected, the RCM has increasingly limited sales of circulation coins in the last few years to Canada only.-John

I don't care what I catch as long as I enjoy myself :yahoo:
Fishing is a lot like collecting , a lot of hard work, experience and expense But at the end of the day it is the enjoyment derived that really makes the whole experience worthwhile  :good:
