Hey team, just wondering if I can get a little help with some war medals please. A friend of mums got in contact with the ADF and she got a letter back saying that they couldn't help with lost war medals and the best thing for her to do would be to buy replacements so I looked on ebay for, one is War Medal 1939-45 and the other is Australia Service Medal 1939-45 so as she knows I'm into coins I was asked if I could look into it so here I am asking for a bit of help please, so where would be the best place to get them and could you either post a link here or PM me details please as I'd like to help if I can as I thought it was pretty slack of the ADF to just say look in the yellow pages but it's what I expect of the government and their lackeys of today so here's a copy of the letter, quite ashamed to say I was once one of them if this is how they are treating people as I thought they could have been a little more helpful or not quite so rude as to just say look it up in the yellow pages :dodgy: ARHHHHHHHHH

Some years ago, one of my brothers managed to get replacement medals for my Dad's service in the VDC during WWII. The replacement medals were sent to the oldest surviving son/daughter at the time, which was one of my sisters, who is now also deceased.
Unfortunately, I know nothing about the process my brother had to go through to get the replacements, and he is also now deceased and once again, the medals are gone. They were supposed to be passed on to the next oldest surviving member of the family, which is another of my brothers.
I only tell this story to let you know that quite a few years prior to 2005, replacement medals were possible, so the Gov'ment policy has obviously changed since then.
Thank you for sharing Nevol, it's ok mate someone will come along soon enough. So sorry to hear you lost yours as well :(

message sent, thank you :hi:
Replacement medals can be got but the process can be lengthy.
The person claiming the medals but be a son/daughter/wife/spouse of the person who was given the medals initially.
Stat decs are required and an investigation will be initiated.
If replacement medals are issues, the regimental number of the person who the medals were given too will be prefixed "D" to show that are duplicate medals.
If these are lost then that is the end of the line.
Now, to commence the process, get in contact with the Defence Honours And Awards Office and take it from there. (This office has a website called Defence Honours and Awards).
Wow info coming everywhere thank you very much I will pass on everything here, really appreciate all your help :hi:

Interesting. Do you do Court Mounting?
Sure do
Interesting topic guys ... thanks for sharing :)
It has me beat and please, I am not having a go at you Bigfellani.
I get really peed off when I attend ANZAC Day marches and I see people wearing medals that have "bought" and I don't mean "duplicates" of officially issued medals.
When you sell duplicate medals, do you ask the purchaser for what use are they going to use the medals for?
Then one has to look at the backyard medal manufacturers who sell FAKE/TIN medals for up to $180.00 per medal and one sees people wearing them to make them selves out to be veterans.
I would like to see legislation re the selling of medals to only those who are truly entitled to them or to registered Medal collectors.
I have absolutely NO problem with people wearing their dead relieves meadals at the Anzac services in honour of them.
I DO however abhor people that wear medals they have NO right to.
Second paragraph here (http://www.australian-threepence.com/blog/2014/05/2014-victoria-cross-5-fine-silver-frosted-uncirculated-coin.html), I didn't know that.

Only on the RIGHT BREAST not on the left breast.
There has always been a protocol for wearing medals but with a lot of people, becoming a war veteran is more important than dealing with protocols.
Have a look at the recent royal wedding in the UK. That stupid English soccer player, David Beckham, who has been awarded the MBE, wearing the MBE on his right breast instead of the left breast. He should have been asked to leave the ceremony and with all the military dignatories about, nobody stepped forward to correct his wearing of the MBE.
One only has to go to an ANZAC day parade and see the number of medals being worn incorrectly and the parade marshals do nothing about it.
Further, it is a Commonwealth Offence to wear medals that one has no entitlement to wear. One only has to look at that idiot who attended the ANZAC Day footy match at the MCG in 2013 and wore a multi row of medals. It is a pity that true veterans didn't take him to one side on sort him out. He was a Collingwood supporter and has subsequently been charged over the incident. He was even passing himself off as a retired Major General. What a lot of cods wollop.
What else do we expect.
Agree GS military apparel should be worn correctly or not at all and same as uniforms and if your not entitled to wear it then something should be done, I think we are becoming far to blasé about these things and I think in time it will only get worse :(
My mum's friend said that her brother had the medals but they don't know what he did with them and I think she'd like them as a keep sake type thing as they are precious if your family have received one or more, but thanks for the info about the numbers and that so I'm getting it all together and she can make up her mind if she'd like to get numbered or a replica.
The number of grand children we do medal for to honour grandparents is huge. Without that the Anzac legend will not live on and we will forget those wars. I have no problem providing it is in honour if some and not to decieve
i just got this handed down to me , its my godmothers fathers medal.
my godmother and her sisters never had kids so thats the end of that family tree - so sad
i now will do some research on his ww1 medals as

apology for the carp photo
Me thinks that medal is from the Boer War and not WW1. Have a look at the names on the Bars on the Ribband, Transvaal, Orange Free State, Rhodesia, Cape Colony. All represent various campaigns/wars/battles/ of the Boer War.
Many a medal collector would like to own that but to sell would be a shame.
Get a new ribbon and have the medal and bars restored.
If one looks at the edge of the medal, there should be a regimental number, name and initials and possibly a unit in which the recipient was serving at the time of the presentation/award of the medal.
A nice momento of someone who is no longer with you.
Very nice Duggee, you might be able to get a new ribbon for it and it will be sweet.
sorry, did not make myself clear ...
i am aware it is a boer war medal, but he also fought in WW1...
on rim ...
