Title: clean or/preserve
Post by: ausjack on May 18, 2014, 10:51:33 AM
Ok they say we shouldn't clean coins but what exactly do they mean by clean as the more I think about it there's sort or two types of cleaning, you have the one's like our friend Mr Walace that has the good rep of clean/dipping coins but then what if it's like half of my collection and I know it's like cleaning but my clean is to PRESERVE the coin and NOT to add value as such even thou in a way it is..I find this all very complicated to say the least, so what do we think about a soak in oil or acetone and a light soapy wash, any thought but no fight please it was just something that I've been pondering about for some time now :hi:

If what's on your coin doesn't come off with acetone or a gentle wash in soapy or distilled water For circulated coins then leave it alone Mate.
PVC is a REAL problem with older coins and some newer ones either stored incorrectly by collectors or some of the crappy mint packaging provided, Acetone should remove the PVC but if it has been there for too long the damage will have been done and there is absolutely nothing that can be done about it.
:ok:

Green stuff can be removed from bronze with WD40 in order to preserve the coin.
There was a post some time ago.

For coins I am going to keep I carefully loosen any organics and apply a wash with acetone.!!  I experiment with some surplus pre decimals by soaking in olive oil, then acetone, generally error coins that would be disregarded due to condition.!!
