I come across this every now and then with pre decimal silvers.
One side of the coin is toned nicely but the other is bland and quite awful.
Is it normally the obverse that is affected.
Anyone else seen this type of damage?

You see that because of the way they've been stored. Maybe it was in a box and the lining of the lid toned the reverse only.

I think PPH is onto something there. The toning that the coin has doesn't appear to be like the normal toning that parliament florins get.
It may have come out of a Dansco push in type album, Was my theory .
I am looking at a shilling that was removed from a cardboard Dansco album, the reverse which was visible is fine, the obverse is very ordinary, dull and unappealing.! :dodgy:

Can you post a couple of pic's of it Mate :)
Setting up now.!!
Usually the push in albums cause rim toning and "back" toning because of the cardboard. The outward surface is usually not affected.

:laughingneqw:
funny - like it!!
The 1961 shilling could also have been from the end of a roll to look like this.
I don't see and toning all I see is wear / cabinet rub on the obverse :ok:
It's a shame because otherwise this looks chunc/gem unc
I found the pic of the (someone's homemade) coin coffin that's toned all these silver reverses.

I do believe that many of the felt lined coin storage trays caused that sort of toning (reaction to the felt/velvet or glue) and also the in/out movement of the trays caused the scuffing/rubbing on the one side of the coin as well.
