Title: trip to melb
Post by: Australian coin on April 29, 2014, 08:10:01 PM
so I had a big day today traveling to melb, and did a bit of coin shopping. was there for a totally different reason but its nice to take a detour

had a nice look at Universal coins, they said cos it was Tuesday you get a free coin, haha so we got 3 penny's, the shop was having a ummm interesting day with odd smells, bahaha don't know what was going on it smelt like bad farts, and they were using the coin tester, I got to take a cool pic to share with the forum, and they were happy to show me, they said it wasn't for sale, and that it was only just brought in, and someone owned it so it was only there for a little bit to suss out, it was a penny struck 4 times and had a dome to it SWEET

next stop
I got the two new bug coins, ANZAC pnc and the colour MOR fresh from the mint box, had heaps to look thru and chose the best ones - thank you Peter Strich, While I was there I turned over his threepences, but there was still half unchecked in the tub as I just ran out of time, still got 3 cuteee ones

also took some pics of interesting coins for the forum, will add when I find the camera from the bottom of my bag

p.s PS shop has 20% and 30% off with heaps of coins

penny error Universal coins

They did have a buyer, but the landlord would not continue the lease.
None of the shops in the arcade are having their leases renewed, and some were even closed.
They have bought a place in Queensland and are most likely going up in August or when the stock is sold.
There are some great bargains at the moment.
There even appears to be spaces on his shelves, which I have never seen that before.
I would suggest if you are in the area it is worth dropping in.

any idea if he's opening up in QLD, that would be fantastic as we have sweet FA up this way..hope he's still open when I get down there so I better get a move on, need to find somewhere really cheap to stay now :(

shame he's not in Sydney as there more chance of me getting there than to Melbourne as never been there but they reckon it's a funny place, driving on the wrong side of the road and all sorts apparently :scratch_one-s_head:

I think you should visit me Matt, free accommodation here where it's gonna cost me a fortune to come down there, much nicer up here and a lot warmer this time of year :friends: but lacking in coin shops so have to go up the coast but that's ok as it's normally warmer again up there :good:

thanks Jen
Peter told us he was taking his stock with him - that he was just selling the good will & location - so that looks as if it has fallen through big time for him

not sure if he will have a shop front AJ but he is pretty experienced with ebay so he might do his business that way and continue to have tables at shows

When I last spoke to peter I was informed that a particular company had bought the complete building that has the arcade in it and that he was to retire and sell only from home until all had been disposed.

His wife can't wait for him to retire.

For AC:-

If you want to see both of the Foy's bags with respective coins, I can oblige with scans of those in my collection.

no need goldy, thx for the offer anyway, it was just a surprise to see how small the little brown bag is, I was like wow it like twice the size of the coin, it just looks really small in person, and people pay crazy money for them. if we had more time and a plan we could have meet up, parking was crazy we wasted so long going round and round in the rain, just crazy, and yeah a little weird if you haven't been there before like me, been to the city heaps but never to the coin shops, my folk have been to that part of the city before and seen the shops, but wow the city is kinda tacky - bumbs with cardboard on every corner wanting money [get a job - so tacky, they all have the same writing on a piece of cardboard, write by the same person with a sob story- I bet they are all on the dole anyway] there was a proper busker playing music and I know they all have to apply for that so that was ok, and a crack head mumbling stuff outside KFC all with foreigners, but yeah if you avoid all that it is ok, that what you get in the city, also seen a person on the ground with a ambulance, no one offers to help, everyone just walks past like zombies, something that is totally different from us county folk.

I'll bet none of them are on the dole.
The invalid pension pays nearly double the dole, doesn't have any requirements to look for work and is paid even when they go overseas on holidays. All they need to do is claim they have substance abuse problems/mental issues and they are set for life. The scammers make it harder for those with real health issues to get the pension
The same bums (with the same begging boxes) pull the same routine here in Sydney.
Need to bring back anti vagrancy laws.

AC
we got all day parking somewhere near an old catholic church that was on a corner in the city
i think it was only something like $9 for the day - a small multi-story building alongside of the church grounds

I am going to a conference in June and the inner city hotel is asking $28 all day per day parking - and that is 'just up the road' in a multi-story building
we are driving down so may have to cop the $$ or leave the car in the burbs at the daughter's place and train it to town

AC that's no token that's a Numismatic Association of Victoria Medallion from 1964 (Carlisle 1964/4) :) It's a double commemorative issued to commemorate both the association's Numismatic Exhibition at the Melbourne Town Hall on October 25th - 27th and the sesquicentennial of the issue of the Holey Dollar and dump. (Interesting to note that although the Holey Dollar was dated 1813 it wasn't issued until 1814)

2,037 gilt medallions were issued at 3 shillings a pop. These days they sell for around $10-$15.

As an aside I work in the same building that Peter Strich is based in and so have spent a fair number of hours trawling his stock in search of a bargain or two since the sale was announced. I must say I will miss strolling past a coin shop on the way to work.

Why not park at Crown casino for the day.   Real cheap there.   Travel around Melbourne on the free bee tram, hop on hop off free.......

we have a coin shop here AJ - true and yes, that is good etc etc
but Peter's shop in Melbourne is small and cramped and he has hundreds of coins in trays that he puts on the counter for you to go through
our coin shop doesn't quite cater so well for the average collector - well, the service isn't quite as personalised and because they also run the auctions, medal ribbon service, & now they have heaps of antique glassware & china  etc etc, so they have a bit of a different set up and sales focus
maybe too, you get used to it and perhaps take it a bit for granted

anyways, I like digging through the world coin bins and chatting to the staff so it always nice to go there
so it is good to have a local coin shop

Hi AJ,i'm in Sydney at the moment helping my Brother wind up his Engineering business and attend to his health concerns but we'll catch up down the track.
I have Friends living near Byron Bay and they Emailed saying the Council is trying to get approval to issue the Homeless with an identity card so charities and Police know who their dealing with,i kid you not,i know there is a large number in the Town but this is Australia 2014.!!!I'll try and find a link but the local media don't want to touch it.

Link...Lismore paper covered it,haven't read the local rags for a while.

Nice to see your looking after your brother when he needs help Basil, I'll PM you mate :good:

So I hope you have the shirts done for when I get there RG and can I have a list put on mine please so we can cross them off once they're done, I might have to go to training with the big man and see if he can motivate me :winkextra:

I'm not really sure about the homeless here as I don't go out much any more but I know we still have blanket bob and he's been here for about 20 years and when I was on council I know the copper didn't mind bob but I know they got rid of a bloke called denis that was a bad bum and drank metho, a lot of homeless actually stay at peoples places when they can and it's sort of like they're nomadic but yeah it's pretty sad to think this is Australia in the 21st century and I would probably be there with them if it wasn't for good ole mumsie.

hey Basil that sounds like a great program but not sure if the homeless will get on board
if they can get discounts and improved safety esp. from the police etc then it might take off
although they may feel that they are in there with the dog registration !
it would stop the double/triple dippers as they just give a false name and go from agency to agency - I have in my past work, phoned other agencies to alert them to clients like that as they deprive other people of some additional well needed welfare and they as well, they are usually just handing the dough over to a drug dealer or the TAB anyways
looks like a local support agency thinks it is a good idea
bet too, that the cards become hot property as a trading/thieving  chip

The cards name is a contradiction of terms Resident HomelessCard:dodgy: So are they residents or homeless?
If the card is so good then it will act like a magnet to attract more trouble makers to the town to enjoy the good life.

lots of homeless reside in the one place/town (doorstep) for decades - AJ mentioned a regular where he lives
I used to have bloke in NQ who was on our back (work) doorstep each morning - he had been homeless for a over a decade - a lawyer who lost his mind when his wife and little girl were killed in a car accident - he crawled into a bottle and stayed there and on our back doorstep! (overnight - he'd go somewhere else in the day time)
very vulnerable person

We are getting a lot of these people in Melbourne now particularly around the overpass rail opposite crown.

Also a lot of beggars with signs saying "homeless and hungry" but with a smoke in their hand.

Most probably millionaires getting tax free money.

These buggers are mucking it up for the "real" homeless and hungry.

yeah some might be, but very few
in my hospital experience the only ones that show up & have say, half million or so in the bank are the poor blighters who have severe untreated mental illness and they can't even remember their real name etc
and it takes some serious delving to find out who they are and their history
dealt with one lady who ate scraps from bins and food that kind local people gave her (Sydney inner city) - turned out that she had a seriously well cashed bank account but hadn't accessed it for decades anyways, we tracked down her family and they were trying to get things sorted for her (last that I knew of)
