Title: New Blue Sheet
Post by: wwwww on April 23, 2014, 07:03:10 PM
I've just finished the new version of the Blue Sheet. The main reason for the change was to introduce mobile and tablet support (not sure if it works well on tablets yet) and to speed everything up.

The new version should work much quicker and the mobile support will allow you to look up values, articles, etc while away from the desk.

The two new features as per request are the photo library while allows you to look up numerous photos for any given coin (there are over 7000 on file) and the full category listing view. Some times it was awkward looking up coin values, particularly for decimal commemorative where you'd have to go through each category for each coin, now you can look them all up on one page, e.g.:
http://www.bluesheet.com.au/Australia/Decimal/Fifty_Cent/values-1.html

The photo library was actually available to me in previous versions but it was never publicly available (mainly because it slowed everything down).

You can check it all out here:

It still follows a blue colour scheme even though there's less of it now.

How do you find navigating the site? Do you feel the login button hidden away in the top-right is hard to find? How about the use of arrows to navigate through a coin's page?

Took a little while to find the login but once you know.....

When you scroll thru to the individual years and see the values for each grade there are some % changes e.g. a 1914 halfpenny at MS62BN is valued @ $410 and -33%. I assume the % is a change in value from when?

It's a one year change, I think the header row went missing somehow.

I am not really impressed with the new set up.
It's harder to navigate and it is infested with adds .
Less information on each page and every one has an advertising pop up.
The pop ups are fine I suppose if you are viewing the public pages but subscribers shouldn't have to put up with the advertisements.

I don't think there are pop ups on the Bluesheet. I certainly don't have them. Walter?

I cant seem to find the grading photos now.
And I'd agree with trout - the popups are extremely annoying.
This one is a bit odd:

I had to reduce content on each page to speed everything up particularly for mobile users.

They're banner ads, popups are the ones that open in a new window - we don't use them. There are actually far less ads than there were before, the only difference is that we've moved them to the bottom of the page which I think is less intrusive. I agree with what you say about subscribers but some advertisers have pre-paid for their advertising so it wouldn't be fair to them to hide them from some viewers.

I will see what I can do about making the non-prepaid ads (the Google ads) disappear for subscribers.

Thanks for the two screenshots, I think that gives a clearer picture of the real problem which is that the ads consume too much screen real estate. I designed it on a 1080p monitor and neglected to consider how little content space there will be on 768p monitors, I'll see what I can do about that too.

In my haste in releasing this I forgot to do the grading photos, I'm working on them now.

Hey Walter, I know it is more work, but could you maintain full site and a mobile enhanced site ? Reason being unless you use a touchscreen, it is harder to use the arrow / swipe to move to the next screen... I agree with the ads too... They are too intrusive .. Just my 2 cents worth !

The ads should be less intrusive now (I've increased content area) and made non-prepaid ads invisible to subscribers.

There is a mobile site but its designed for touchscreen. There was an old mobile site designed for non-touchscreen phones before but it wasn't very popular due to the general awkwardness of scrolling with the arrows, etc. I still however tried to make as much of the mobile site accessible on non-touchscreen phones, particularly the descriptive content but some parts of the site would be pointless, e.g. the photo gallery isn't particularly useful on low resolution screens.

Thanks Walter, I think I didn't explain it correctly before.., I was talking about a desktop site for PC and a mobile site ( to work with touch screens ) ., current version of bluesheet is handy when used with an iPad etc. however if I was to use it on a pc (non touch) then clicking on arrows to get to things take time... UI/UX needs tweeting, that's what I was trying to say before...

Hey Walter,

I would leave the old blue sheet website format as is + add some new things to make it faster for PC ( full website)... Then the new blusheet is perfect for touch screens(mobile version)... I will think about this more when I have some time and give you more feedback...

Okay, finally got an opportunity to play around with the bluesheet site...( used my iPad to test)

Good -

1. Love the search function. It would be helpful if you have a bit of a blurb around what can be searched as it is not obvious how to look for certificates and you can search by year and denomination  ... I tried it the search function and absolutely love it !

2. It looks much better with less intrusive adverts at the bottom.. Would be better without them, however someone needs to pay for things so you have to accept it as fact of life :yahoo:

3.  Price layout and information around coins are good.

4. Like the idea of a "portal" to get a single integrated view to have both blue sheet and the auction information relating to the user in one place.. Well done.

Things to improve

1. When you are on a specific coin page, "home page" is hard to find. I figured it out.. But I live with mobile sites day in day out... So I am not a typical user.. It would be harder for other users to navigate

2. On the iPad, the next button on the screen doesn't come up.. "Pushing the page up"  is the only way to navigate through the site. Again not a typical motion used to navigate through pages... May be change that to a "swipe" it keep it consistent with normal iOS or Android OS would help ? Or just arrows ?

3. May be best to have the full menu (what you have now under your logo) to permanently have a navigation bar on the left had side of the site ?

These are some very quick observations I have made ... Overall functionality of the site is very good... However UI/UX need bit of improvement to get it from good to great...

Again these are my 1/2 cent worth !!!! (Hope you will take this as constructive feedback ! )....

Thanks for your feedback ausproof, I've been very busy lately and haven't had a chance to add your suggestions yet.

echidna, in each coin page (just click the date to get to the coin, or search in the top right to go straight to the coin page), go to the last page (using the arrows in the top-right, or by swiping down on a tablet or phone). It isn't available for all coins however.

There are some NGC certs that don't get valued due to a bug I haven't fixed yet, PCGS certs should work though. Have you got any examples of it not working?

I had another attack of insomnia tonight so in my boredom I went flicking through the Bluesheet  pages and noticed something a little odd concerning the valuations for the coins in the 2006 Silver proof year set.

The 10c and round 50c silver proofs have pretty much average values, The 1c, 5c, 20c, $1 and the $2 coins don't have any values listed at all But the 2c Silver Proof coin has some very ambitious/interesting valuations indeed.
Here they are as listed;
PR67DC  $1,600
PR68DC  $2,500
PR69DC  $3,300
I have a couple of these sets and the 2c coin in each of them is at least PR68DC and probably better, Anyone want my spare set that includes the 2c coin for a paltry 2K :angel::angel:

You may need to have a look at that type three 2c proof Page Walter :ok:

When you click the link where it says "Mintage 5,829" you get a message that says "fewer than 10 examples known". Without checking, I think I have one and trout has two. :yahoo:

OOps , My Bad the coins in the 2006 proof set have the Machin obverse, the ones with the Bradly obverse are the rare ones.
See what happens when I don't get enough sleep

Bluesheet and numisbid seem to be down at the moment.
Walter is probably doing a bit of site maintenance.

I don't think that the prices achieved at that sale are a true reflection of todays coin values as it was pretty much an overload of top class coins all at once.
The greedy buyers premium would have had a detrimental effect on the amount of bidders present as would the terrible way postal and internet bidders are historically treated at a Nobles auction.
If these coins had of been auctioned at a better venue and by a different auction house I imagine that the prices achieved would have been higher, Or better still if the collection was sold in dribs and drabs instead of flooding the market.

Yeah we're doing some upgrades, they were scheduled for 4am but we ran into issues. We'll need to continue late tonight.
