WOW, just WOW!!!!!!!!!!!
Bloody ridicules I recon, What is happening here are dealers positioning prices to inflate the market ?
With regards to the 3d it's all about available coins. There's 6 on the population. Mark and I both have one, Emu has one in his 3d set -that's half of them accounted for. The threepence is a popular series to collect.
Fingers will be burnt I think.
There is no shortage of choice UNC QE2 coins.
More will come out of the woodwork.

I would imagine that that sort of price will bring many of these out of the woodwork :ok:

Possibly but I bet the next one doesn't get even half that price. The market at the top end is very thin and once all the registry set players have a coin there's little support left for such strong prices. PPH and I have had our coins for several years and were bought when prices were much, much, much, much lower :) The coins came out of the same mint roll.

No. These were auction prices. What you are seeing is a case of very keen collectors for who will pay huge money for top population coins.
As 2 of the holders of such fine pieces you all3 of you must be very happy with the achieved price of the 56 threepence.
I will settle for mine in VF at $1.50. :)
Hi Guys,
I am a newbie here ( collecting for a while, but first time on a forum) ... I agree sometimes people pay ridiculous amount of money for "not so rare" coins just because they are the top of the pop. If it was an early low mintage coins, I can understand.. But later coins you never know when the collectors pulling out their collections and start grading them with PCGS... I have been burnt ... Bought an equal finest Shill a while back (1952 MS 65) checked the pop chart, there is a MS 66 available... So all that money I paid, gone to waste... Most of the time the word " equal finest or single finest" gets good money... But the risk is you will loose that position in a heartbeat when someone else gets their coins graded with top grades.. My 2c worth...
Love to hear what you all have to say..
PS - glad finally I got an opportunity to post here :yahoo:

You are most welcome. I like your observations about buying late date top pop coins. It's not an inherently bad thing to do but you should expect that your "top pop" probably won't be forever.

Yes, that's the point... When you pay a few grands for a coin you want it to hold its value... The risk is when you buy a coins for an astronomically high price, as soon as it becomes the second best it will go 10 times less... Ie top pop 1957 proof penny PR67RD went for $12 K ... PR66RD goes for ~$2K ... I have a few equal second bests I bought for a few $$$ whereas their big bothers would fletch tens of thousand $..... As per my original post I paid $$$$ for a 1952 Shill now it is equal second best (6 coins )... Not sure what that does to mine... Lesson learnt...now I know how to play the market.. When you spend your own money, you learn very fast...

yes that seems to be the fastest way to learn :)
With top pop coins you also have to realise a lot of collectors don't care with respect to the long-term value of the coin, they just want to have the currently finest 'graded'.

Welcome, yeah its a jungle out there,Ebay is good training before taking on the Pro.'s. whose sole aim is to maximise profit on every Coin/Note they sell.

I agree with you to a certain degree, but to pay $10,000 more for May be 12 months of glory is not worth in my books... May be I am too poor :yahoo:
I agree for a early coin it is well worth it as the likelihood of equal finest coming out of woodwork is slim.. However for a later coin with vey high mintage, likelihood is very much there..
I have seen some collectors, they just want the best and they have deep pockets.. What can I say....
yes I agree dcoin, I must be king of the castle and be numero uno on the pop chart and then my life is complete, well there's a lot that think like that in the coin world. So many think they are better than they actually are :winkextra:

Thanks mate... I have been collecting for a while... I have bought fakes, some junk coins off eBay ... Poorly graded coins .. You name it, I have done it... Now I have spent a lot of time learning how to grade coins etc, but more mature in that way...
I buy lot of coins from Walter and Eric, also from Chris (Pacific rim) ... Easier to buy graded coins than buying raw... Last time I bought a 1934/35 Florin, it came back in a body bag .... So wasted $600++ for nothing !!! Life is a journey... You learn everyday ..
ya might have to start posting some pic's Aus :winkextra:

That's going to take a long time... Let me see what I can do.. May be post some fakes first ( which I have paid money and someone very happily sold them to me off eBay ) ...
:laugh2: yeah what troutski said, but what ever you'd like mate as most of us here just love coins so it really doesn't matter so just grab a hand full so I can :drooling:
The main thing to remember 'ausproofs' is that coin collecting (at least for me and most others I assume) all comes down to enjoyment, it shouldn't be about making money or loosing it, obviously that is at the back of most peoples mind, however, you should collect a series of coins which you enjoy and/or is a challenge to complete your set, whether that be top pop or all in VF condition.
Yeah some fakes would be nice but sorry you got ripped to find out about them the hard way :(
You should start a new thread AP when you post the pic's.
This one is going WAY of topic

Point taken, for me coin collecting is a hobby. Also I would look at this as a bit of an investment ... this is my honest agenda... I love coins so I collect them, at the same time if it becomes an investment, bonus...
PS - I have lost more $$ than what I have made (honestly I have only sold a very few coins at a slight profit... most probably my kids are the once will laugh all the way to a bank when I hit the bucket :yahoo:)...
So yes, it should't be about making money unless that's what you do for a living. !

I think this coin will go for over $5K. may be as high as $10-12K...
however applying my previous logic, 20 Mil coins, I am sure something better will turn up in no time. Also the coin on auction was graded recently by the looks of things.. so what to say there wont be a M67 RD or a MS 68 ?
However If I had a little fortune at disposal, I would pay top $$ to get what I wanted.. this is all about supply and demand !
