The first Australian $5 coin was minted in 1988 and there have been many issues of these since.
I prefer the Ali/bronze coins to the silver ones.
I like the heft of these coins and their size , I only have 30 or so of these so far.
Anyone else collect these?
Do you count the 2000 Olympic ones?
The worst $5 coin is the 1994 women's vote coin
And don't forget the pnc's like the same Edna $5 pnc

There are 28 2000 Olympic coins in the set so they are definitely counted, I would imagine that a great deal of these sets have been "Cashed in" at the bank and have probably been destroyed .
I would imagine that in 15-20 years these sets will become more valuable than face due to the survival numbers.
I have to agree regarding the 1994 coin it is a shocker.
I have nowhere near a complete set of these coins but I do find them interesting and different :ok:
I only have two $5 coins.
The 1988 and the 1994.
The 1988 has just been traded and will be
winging it's way to the U.K. very shortly.
The 1994 will be in the next trade.
I have 80+ including a good 20 1988 some in Commonwealth bank sleeve one even painted black buy a bored person and then given to me as a mute coin by a bank
I like the bi-metal bradman ones, I seem to get a few of them in bulk lots but generally they tend to be a bit of a disappointment. that is why it is hard to find a $5 coin worth more than face value that is not minted in silver or gold
My 5-year-old niece recently gave me a Simpson-and-donkey $5 out of her "collection". I'm not quite sure where she got it from, but it's been well played with; EF condition at best. It's probably one of the most heavily-circulated examples of this coin in existence. But, since I don't already have one and it is the first coin she's ever given me, I'm keeping it.
I only have the 1990 Anzac 75th Anniversary $5 and I like it.
Ken
I have about a dozen or so of the 88's, an Anzac's one, a bradman & i'm pretty sure i've got the 94 women's vote.
Plenty of '88s around. Because the Commonwealth Bank sold so many they are rather common. I have had to say "thanks, but no thanks" for most my local branch tellers say have been just cashed in. If they are in original packaging and good condition, fine -but, mostly they aren't.
All mine are in original packaging.
I have several of the Alum-Br $5 coins myself.
However, I think I have four or five from 1988 and all are in different packaging from the Commonwealth Bank.
Here is a nice new one for you to get.
This will no doubt be very popular with a 30,000 mintage this time I don't think the RAM want to be caught short this time around.Five Dollar VC coin (http://www.downies.com/Royal-Australian-Mint/2014--5-Victoria-Cross-1oz-Silver-Frosted-Coin/5476/productview.aspx?utm_source=Downies+Online+Email+Newsletters&utm_campaign=fc8fa4d7ae-RAM_Victoria_Cross4_22_2014&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_cb58a32640-fc8fa4d7ae-29356054)
Seeing it's the Victorian Cross I'm sure it will be a sell out, hoping to emulate the one dollar?
I picked up an 1988 $5 proof a few years back when I visited Parliament house, paid about $35 for it. Then earlier this year I picked up 4 of the 1988 ones in the Comm Bank plastic slips at face value. Then I got a 1990 "75 Years of Anzac" at just over face. I never really looked for any more but a couple of weeks ago I saw the 2000 Olympic set going on Ebay. All 28 coins including the special album. Picked them up for $162.50. The albums sold for $20 back when they first came out so I almost got the coins at face value which I think is a great bargain.
I have also picked up a 1992 "International Year of Space" $5 at just over face value too.
So now I have go the urge to go and collect some more. But I am going to restrict it to only the Aluminium Bronze ones that are 38.74 mm wide.
Why did the RAM start to do some in bi-metal at a different size and weight? Might get them later but not sure yet?
Also Perth mint have done some too but theirs are mostly bullion versions.
So this is what I will be chasing .......

From what I have figured out these are all the 38.74mm Alum Bronze versions of the $5.
They are all pretty much available on fleabay, some overpriced and some quite fairly priced.
Some are quite expensive such as the Town Hall series probably due to low mintage and were only available at ANDA shows.
Not sure if I like the "Distinctly Australian" one though .. that one looks like granny bait to me.
Cheers Mike
I think the 1988 parliament house coin was the first coin i got. It was sold in primary schools... at least thats where i got it.
Its looking pretty ugly with much love given to it with my grubby-kid hands. I hope there is something similar sold in the primary school when my daughter is older :)
Looks like you have a few to collect, good luck :good:
I only have 10 of the 1988 coins myself as well as a set of the 2000 Olympic coins.
I still have my two sets of the 2000 Olympic coins here and still in the origina, packaging all in good, solid white packing box.
Not sure what I want to do with them.
I will have a look and see what spares I have when I get home and see if I can shorten that list for you Mike :ok:
After doing a little more research I have found 2 more Aluminium Bronze 38.74mm $5 coins to add to the list I mentioned above ....
KM 386 - 1998 75 Years of Royal Flying Doctor Service
KM 517 - 2000 Sydney Paraylmpics
I think the Flying Doctor one was only issued as a proof coin in a case.
The Paraylmpics was in a card similar to the other Sydney Olympics $5 coins. I can only see one on Ebay and it is listed at $59.95!
Since I posted the above list I have managed to get hold of these ones
2002 RAM Manchester Commonwealth Games - 1
2002 RAM Manchester Commonwealth Games - 2
2002 RAM Manchester Commonwealth Games - 3
2004 RAM Bicentenary of Tasmania (H)
2006 RAM Queens Baton Relay
2016 RAM Long Tan
Did you get a chance to see what spare ones you had Trout?
I'm still in the Netherlands at the moment but will be back home in just over a week.
Cheers Mike
To tell you the truth I had forgotten all about these.
I will have a squiz tonight, I know that I have one of the remembrance coins with the giant printed Poppy on it :ok:
Just remember that the parliament house $5 came in two types of packaging. One of them being PVC. So check them, and separate the coins from the PVC if you have any.
I think I may have 3 different styles of packaging.

Yep .. I have done that ... my best one I have put in a coin flip ... But these $5 coins are huge and putting them in a flip is a mission lol.

I must do some experiments with welding PET. For a coin that heavy, I reckon we need something much more substantial than a standard mount.
Of course, finding some straight-sided bottles to provide the sheet stock is going to be a challenge... :(
This is how the professionals do it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNbTQ1ff6FU
OK .. After doing a lot of searching and looking around on fleabay etc, I have found another Alum-Bronze 38.74mm $5 Coin.
It is the 1994 Enfranchisement of Women proof coin. If there are any others I have missed please let me know. (Not including the Bi-Metallic releases)
So as far as I can make out this is the full list of these $5 coins....

I have a couple of these , Sydney Olympics PNC swimming and athletics like the look of em still has original docket in bag $9.85 each lol
I just had to share that list on the MNS Facebook page:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/1430907327204766/
Got this reply:
Michael Bentley Thanks for posting it Fulvio ... it should be noted that it does not include the Bi-metalic $5 coins and some of the ones in the above list were only issued as proof coins. eg the 1994 Enfranchisement of Women coin was issued as a Bi-Metalic coin and as a proof Aluminium-Bronze 38.74mm coin.
Do any of you guys know what the "GZ" mintmark means on the 2006 $5 NCLT Duyfken Exploration of Australia coin is supposed to be about?
You can find a pic of it here

Click on the reverse image and it will open up a large version of the image

QuoteThe GZ mintmark on the $5 unc coin stands for Groot Zuydtlandt "Unknown Southern Land" and was the name given to Australia when the Duyfken made the first historical charting of our great Australian coast in 1606.
This is from the May 2006 Mint issue #66 :ok:

Thanks Trout .. I have been updating the entries on Numista for as many $5 coins as I can. It is so obvious now . . I even put Groot Zuydtenlandt in the descriptions on Numista, but did not connect the dots when it came to that mintmark lol. It actually means Great Southern Land.
Cheers Mike
I also had absolutely NO idea what the GZ mintmark was there for either, Thank the Gods for google :)
Since I originally posted on this thread about $5 Alum bronze coins I have now managed to get almost all of them. The only 2 I don't have yet are the 2012 Melbourne Town Hall and the 2012 Distinctly Australian coins.
I pretty much picked them all up on ebay ... some of them for really bargain prices. For instance I picked up the other three (Brisbane, Sydney & Perth) 2012 Town Hall coins for around $25 each when they normally are listed for $60 and upwards, so was pleased with that.
There is one anomaly in them .. that is the 2004 $5 Eureka Stockade coin which is not Aluminium Bronze, it is Copper Nickel. It was also put out by Perth Mint rather than the RAM, but it is standard size so included it.
At this stage I have not bothered with any of the Bi-metallic ones which are smaller and lighter than these big 38.74mm ones. I would love to know why the RAM could not make up their mind what size and composition the $5 NCLT coins should be.
Cheers Mike
