Title: Unusual 1930 Halfpenny
Post by: stevo1962 on April 19, 2014, 11:24:49 AM
I noodled this coin some time ago and couldn't work out what was going on with it.There looks to be some ghosting of the letters on the
reverse and a really poor strike on the obverse.Does anybody have any ideas?

Steve
I see lots of coins for sale that are called something quite fancy like die adjustment strike etc
this coin, to my knowledge is what I have been told is a die pressure adjustment strike - an early stage strike where they test the dies
the pressure has been reduced and this causes that indented appearance in the centre legends and the obverse centre  (others may disagree I am sure)
I have a few pennies like this as well (but no halfp's that I recall)
your photo is not crisp enough to show the error
I have resized it and it looks a  tad more noticeable
