Title: Token Info Required
Post by: Nevol on March 29, 2014, 12:01:31 PM
I know we have some Token Collectors so I'm hoping for some extra info re the following one: L. Chr. Lauer's Spiel Und Reichpfennig  21mm – 2.2 g

I've found some similar ones that are 40mm across, but this one is only 21mm.

Is there a site where I can research it myself?
Were they 'minted' in Nurnberg?
What is the composition?
Approximate date?
Approximate Condition?
Approximate value?

Thanks in advance.

I think the best answer to this is "probably". The name "L. Chr. Lauer" indicates the person responsible for manufacturing it; the Lauers were one of the most prolific - and longest-lasting - of the families of jeton-makers of Nuremberg. The individual in question is Ludwig Christian Lauer, token-master from 1842 to 1873. Your token therefore likely falls in this time period, which also lines up with the subject matter, Austro-Hungarian Emperor Franz Joseph I, who ruled from 1848 but whose portrait on coinage resembled the portrait on this token (with one-piece sideburns-and-moustache) only from 1866. "1866-1873" seems like a reasonable timeframe for your token, but it could even date from after 1873, since the company that he founded continued to use his name after his death and even survives to this day as Lauer (http://www.lauer-metall.de/eng/history.html), though they are now more into "car parts" rather than "tokens".

It's brass. I'd put the condition at "EF". Value? I suppose the link posted above is as good an indication as any. There isn't a standard catalogue for them.

The UK Detector Finds Database article (http://www.ukdfd.co.uk/pages/nuremberg-jetons.html) on Nuremberg jetons is pretty good and helpful with older types (pre-1800), not so good at your time period.

Thanks Sap, you're a mine of information as usual.  Thanks to Joe also.

I now know a lot more about this token that I only discovered yesterday in a mixed bag of old German coins, some pre WWI and some pre & post WWII.

I can't remember where or when I acquired them, but I'd guess it was a few years ago.
