Title: PCGS or NGC
Post by: trout on March 24, 2014, 04:39:24 PM
I have "Finally" received my slabs back from NGC.
I sent this batch over to the States with a submission to PCGS 10 days later, the PCGS coins arrived nearly 2 weeks ago .
In fact a submission I sent to PCGS a month ago is already in Australia and I should get them in the next few days.

I have since sent another submission to NGC (Which I regret now) and also one to PCGS, I just know the PCGS batch will be back home way before the NGC lot.
Both companies grading is on a par but the service and speed of PCGS blows NGC clear out of the water.
Even the packaging and postage methods are totally different.
PCGS give you a sweet plastic storage box , NGC send your coins back in a crappy cardboard box :dash1:

Have a look at the majority of coins on numisbid, pacificrim and other auction sites and websites, says it all really but PCGS is the clear choice.

Australian coins that are graded by PCGS sell better too over NGC-graded coins. There is a reason PCGS is more expensive but I still use them.

Lo and behold , One day after I finally get my coins back from NGC the second Lot from PCGS is waiting for me at the post office :yahoo:
I only joined NGC so that I could see which is the more efficient grading company between it and PCGS.
The costs involved are pretty much the same but that is where the similarity between the two end.

PCGS makes NGC look like a "Backyard" event as far as service, presentation  and efficiency are concerned.
NO more NGC submissions for this little Black Duck :ok:

My last lot of coins I sent to NGC arrived there a few days ago.
These were sent before I realised how slack they are :dash1:
They are still marked as received and yet they have already billed my CC account.
They may be slow at grading but they are lightning fast when it comes to charging :dodgy:

Yep, why save a few bucks to get a slab worth less. When I bid on slabs I set my bid on the basis that a NGC slab is worth one grade lower than a PCGS slab. So a NGC MS65 will get a bid similar to a PCGS MS64.
PCGS has won the Australian market. Checked out the set registry last night and PCGS is about to crack 1,000 sets. Its easy to find 3-5 fantastic sets to drool over and another dozen sets that are decent works in progress in most categories. Go to NGC and with the exception of Strand Coins Benchmark Collection the place is a ghost town.

If that is the case all the coins I have coming back from PCGS graded at MS69 or PR69DC should cross over at NGC as 70's.
I doubt that this would happen, I sent a AU58 crown graded by PCGS to NGC and it came back AU58 as well.
I don't have a problem with NGC's grading but I do have a problem with their service :ok:

As mentioned elsewhere in the forum, only 38% of slabs crossover to PCGS. As you can specify a lower grade for a crossover, I assume the actual conversion rate to an equivalent grade is lower than 38%.

The 38% includes slabs from other TPGs too though, so it'd probably be higher than 38%.

Besides NGC there is ANACs as first tier. There are a few other slabbers that are decent but then hundreds of 3rd and lower tier self slabbers. Do they accept basement slabber coins to even cross over without first cracking them out? Too much risk of accepting dodgy MS66 as a crossover to say PCGS MS64 and then cracking the slab to find the slab hid body bagging faults.

I guess they'd accept basement slabs. They are going to charge the fee whether or not the coin crosses.
I must admit I lacked the courage to send my NNC graded Morgan dollars to PCGS as crossovers so I cracked them out of the slabs. They came in at the grades I expected (two to three grades lower than on the NNC slabs).

I checked their policy and they will only cross over NGC, ANACS and ICG slabbed coins. They won't accept basement slabbed coins for cross over without the coins being cracked out first.

OK that's interesting.
