I believe they were all slabbed. They'd have to be to realise those prices.

Which is why you don't ever say anything if you find something. But be it a gold nugget or a coin, people just have to blab. Which brings every feral predator on the planet down on them, armed with metal detectors, pickaxes and scumsucking lawyers. :diablo:
I don't know.
I would have thought a big part of the sale of these coins would be providence.
One of the coins (from the article) 1866 Liberty $20 gold piece without the words "In God We Trust"
If there were records of coins like this being minted, then surely it could be traced.
For example...

There is another Trout that thinks these coins are the proceeds of a robbery in the 1900's
I tend to agree :)
27k was a whole heap of cash in the 1900's
It was always too good to be true
Does stolen property remain stolen forever?
I know that in Austria if you have possession for 20 years it is yours.
Other countries have Adverse Possession, squatters rights etc.

I'm pretty sure the Aboriginal community would say yes.
But then I guess it depends on who does the thieving. If they're bigger than you, like say a government or company, then they just make the rules up to suit themselves anyway.
It looks like "finders keepers":

I'm very glad to hear that.
QuoteNot long after it became public last month that the unnamed couple had found the coins on their property, news outlets dug up an old newspaper clip showing a suspiciously similar amount of coins had been stolen from the San Francisco branch of the U.S. Mint circa 1900.
I really wonder about what passes for journalism nowadays. What good did they possibly think their "investigation" might possibly achieve? Other than screw the finders that is. The media do this a lot, I've noticed.
