Polished/cleaned, heavy crazing on the coins as well. However, at $350 as long as you are happy with them you won't find a 1962 set for that price anywhere else.

Well as I said over on CCF they are proofs.  Not sure that they are polished but they do look a little crazed.  If they aren't polished then you've done well for the price.

well done trout, they sell for more at auction houses usually $350 +commission , my guess they will grade pr65s , the threepence maybe pr66

tho beware you will get addicted to buying pre decimal proofs

With that level of crazing the surfaces should be milky white, I am pretty confident they have had a bath or polish at some time.  Trout, easiest way to tell is to hold them under light and look for cartwheel lustre.

They would grade 63-65 at pcgs, they may get body bagged but with proofs unless the cleaning is heavy pcgs rarely body bag coins but it does affect the surfaces and will significantly lower the grading. I would strongly recommend not sending this set to pcgs.

I will be checking these out when they arrive and if they have had the "Peter Wallace" treatment they will be going back regardless of the "No Returns".
Paypal will see it differently, if they are polished then proof coins or not that makes them simply "Junk" silver

With respect you can't really tell much from those images because of the light conditions in which they were taken.  Images taken in dim ambient natural light make coins look awful.  Looking at coins with the naked eye in dim ambient natural light makes them look awful.  They might actually be awful, they might be a little bit awful, or they might be ok'ish.  I think we can all agree they won't be great.

And further, proofs with a polished finish don't typically have "cartwheel" lustre.  They have a mirror finish which doesn't cartwheel.

Agree, the 1959 set is probably the only one that shows some significant cartwheeling. Let me rephrase, look for original surfaces, if they look dull/blue they have been dipped, also proofs were polished but if they look too shiny given the crazing that would be a bit of a red flag as well.

This is also the case with modern proofs and I have noticed that the wedding set coins also don't "Cartwheel" either :ok:

I will be putting these under my usb gizmo looking for hairlines or other alterations to the coins surfaces.
A quick look at the coins in bright sunlight is normally enough to tell if a coin has been "Doctored"

I find the crazing to be a result of poor storage, either in PVC or too long in the black boxes.  Dipped proofs either look slightly hazy, don't have the full brilliance of a pristine set, or show staining when tilted and viewed at an angle.

According to the tracking these coins should be at my post office today.
I will do some scans and take some pics when they get here and post them on this thread.

Here are the images as promised.
NO nasty cleaning hair lines and they don't appear to have been dipped.
The original box is a real cheap and nasty plastic affair and I believe it may contain PVC.
This set appears to have been bought  at a Noble's auction at some stage.
I will post the pics of individual coins one at a time.
Grades and opinions are more than welcome :)

Box and Noble's card the coins came on

Very nice.

I wouldn't stress too much about possible PVC in the case... its not a problem in its native hard form. But I would make sure those flips aren't PVC.

Was in the last nobles sale, I inspected the lot but didn't bid on it, described as toned with a light scratch on the florin, estimate of $200, sold for $300+bp. The 1962 threepence always grades well and yours loiks pretty good.

I also looked up the lot #1444 and the 2/- must have been "Artfully" Dipped as there is NO obvious signs on the coin.
Looks like I got the set for what he paid for it.
These Will be going in with my next submission to PCGS and it will be interesting to see how they grade these
