So as a new collector one of the first things I'm trying to accomplish is filling a binder of all decimal circulating coins.
Upon looking at the RAM mintage figures I notice the mintage of the 1992 dollar coins to be very low in comparison to all other coins at just 0.008 million.

I'm just wondering if this is going to be the trouble coin to find?

Yup. Here's what I've got for it:
1992: 200,000?
Note that that figure is disputed as well. Your best bet is to try and find a mint set to break one out of.

They are production numbers, not coins issued into circulation.
Have a look at this link, site is maintained by PPH :-

Unless I am mistaken, there were no Kangaroo 41 Coins for 1992, but there was a coin to celebrate the Barcelona Olympic Games.
Even the link in the above comment , the table that turns up does not indicate any picture of the Women In Sport Effigy that represented the Barcelona Olympic Games.
Me thinks the RAM table is wrong.....I have checked my $1 collection and I do not have a 1992 kangaroo $1 Coin.

NO MOR coin in 1993 either , they were all landcare coins :ok:
Ok cool thanks for the info guys much appreciated

No no no no, Bum steer by me ::blush::blush:
That RAM page is for circulation coins only, Excluding Mint or Proofs.
My thought is that RAM had a shortfall of the 1984 or 1985 circulation MOR
and needed to strike additional numbers to fill their 5 Coin Dollar Folder issued in 1992.
This question comes up at least once every six months. The RAM website is wrong. There was no MOR dollar for 1992. This has been confirmed directly with the RAM (but for the life of me I cannot find the email).

You would think you RAM would get their facts correct, haha
RAM website is wrong on this and so are the guides
There was a thread I saw somewhere recently listing a 1992 MOR.

RAMint does not have records going that far back.
The only place that information will exist is the Treasury Annual Reports for that year.
Sadly the Treasury web site only goes back to 1996 Annual Report.
Could be at the archive site but I could not find it.
Only 1992 RAMint circulation or Proof sets I have seen include Barcelona coin - not MOR!

Went for over a grand, didn't it? Wonder if its the only sighting of this beast?
$1000
Nice round number!
RAM would have records ... go to RAM gallery in Canberra and they do talk themselves up.
Biggest problem is they don't give a rats about enquiries they just want to promote sales of everything to general community
Numismatics is a word the RAM don't know about unfortunately
I have had a reply from the RSAM re the 1992 $1 Kangaroo Coin and here it is below:
Good Morning Mr *********,
The 1992 $1 'five kangaroos' coin that you are referring to on the website is a circulating coin, and the information on the website accurately reflects the production amount reported in the Royal Australian Mint's annual report containing that year. It might help to note that there is no record kept of the quantities of coins issued into circulation by date, and never has been.
The Barcelona $1 coin was a numismatic product, and 16 996 of these were produced at the Royal Australian Mint and were available only through the onsite Mint shop.
We hope this information is of assistance to you

Now does the above response clear the air? I am not sure as I still do not have a 1992 Kangaroo Coin in my collection. Now does anyone on this forum have this coin please?

Well that contradicts what we were told by the RAM. I think you're going to be pushing excrement uphill if you want one of these Bruce because they don't exist.

And yet... at least one clearly
DOES exist.

A proof. Not a circulating coin.

I will be visiting the RAM this coming weekend and I shall try and sort this thing out thedn.
Plus, I hope to have a few more emails that I sent in the past 7 months answered at the same time.
Another reason for me to really consider giving the whole game away.......
More to follow upon my return after Wednesday, 29 Jan 2014.

Goldseeker there would be nobody at RAM on the weekend that could help you,Gift shop employees just work there as sales assistants... Australia Day long weekend as well :dodgy:
There are some 1992 MOR dollars, they're just very scarce (and that 8000 figure doesn't refer to them).
Could you elaborate?
Were they issued into circulation?
Just some NCLT made?
Only a few 'mint sport' coins made?
Any idea of how many there are?
I m ust also ask, where are they and for what were they minted for please?
They appear at auction every now and then, I've only encountered two separate examples though there are likely a couple more. No idea how they came about, possibly mint sport, one dealer has suggested they came from 1991 proof sets though I've found no evidence of this. The last one I recall went for $1200 at a Downies sale.
Looks like this topic has already been discussed on this forum.

They made some interesting points.
Maybe somebody has got 195 rolls of them stashed away.
For a rainy day.
I've browsed the threads and condensed into this:
1992 Mob of Roos $1, does it exist? (http://www.australian-threepence.com/blog/2014/01/1992-mob-of-roos-dollar.html)
MMMMM.... Very interesting Interest!?
Ce n'est pas moi!
PPH that is a great article. Congratulations!

Good article, though the last paragraph seems to have escaped the proof-readers. :diablo:
PPH,
Thank you for the article.
Looks to me like you have covered the facts perfectly.
Thanks for the article cleared up a lot of questions.
Question what is meant by "mint sport" in the third paragraph?

Its where the Mint workers mess about at work creating unauthorized Coins :ok:

Wouldn't that be illegal and corrupt?
QuoteWouldn't that be illegal and corrupt?
As long as the coins don't leave the Mint it is just harmless "Skylarking".
It's when these coins get out of the Mint is when the questions of illegality and corruption is an issue.
Either way I imagine anyone getting caught doing this would be Unemployed in a heartbeat :good:
I'm convinced they do exist and have not been found.
I did some calculation previously and estimated that there would be less than one in 150,000 $1 coins in circulation.
Has anyone actually looked for them to that exent? People didn't even think to look and I doubt many people who have noodled through that many coins have actually been on the look out for a 1992. They have probably been found and passed over without a second thought.
To say conclusively they don't exist you'd need to go through nearly 1,000,000 coins. I've looked through only 15,000 for the 1992.
I am convinced circulated examples will be found in future.
I wonder if an Australian dealer or person of sufficient means could make or has made a public offer similar to this PCGS offer in order to bring one out:
http://www.pcgs.com/top100/reward.aspx
or emulated B. Max Mehl with his offer of $50 for a 1913 Liberty Nickel.

I would hazard to guess that Goldie would qualify as a collector that would have searched a million $1 coins.
He doesn't Miss much and he hasn't come across one yet :ok:
Has anyone ever seen one?
Thought not
Goldie...how many $1's have you noodled through with your eyes peeled for the 1992 mob of roos?
I just read the thread again and got the impression Goldie has not been looking for them. I don't think many folks have been looking.
Ready to do another million coins Goldie!?
I do think 'have they been looked for' is quite relevant.
If no one is looking, then none will be found.
I have not been watching for them in my searching.
