Title: Sheep
Post by: trout on January 09, 2014, 08:04:04 PM
Why is it that only about 10% of our members post new threads and the other 90% just view them or have an occasional reply.
About time the rest of you Mob came up with your own thoughts and concepts.
We are all collectors here and we  all have questions and views about our coins.
The only stupid post or question is the one not posted or asked.
Don't be one of the "Sheep" due to fear of being foolish, I ask stupid questions all the time and I get educated and qualified answers to  them :good:
This is your site so make the most of it  :yahoo:

I fully agree with the above comments.

Don't just drop in and read.   Post something for all to read.

Hear, hear! Absolutely spot on.

I've often wondered why 90% of every group does absolutely nothing. funny thing is, the 10% who do it all are also the ones who get the most out of it, be it knowledge, experience, fellowship or whatever.

It sometimes seems people just don't care about anything, except maybe food, drink and sex. :(

yeah agree, but I do care mate :friends:

I suppose when you think about it as the 10/90% works with the rich as well, isn't that what they say, the 10% with the wealth dictate what the 90% do..I can't work out why we don't change it as 90% should out do 10% but it just doesn't seem to work for some reason :(

My theory is that it's because only 10% of the population have the genetic flaw that makes them unable to simply sit back and watch while problems are happening all around them which they could be doing their part to help solve.

As for the specific statistics for this forum: we currently have 290 members. When sorted by post count, the first 29 members have made 33,889 posts out of a total of 38,791 - or 87% . So yes, the 90/10 rule holds pretty good for this forum.

There are some explanations for the general lack of participation on what is fundamentally a participation-based website like a forum.

First off, you do have to remember, much of this forum is "closed", invisible to the general browsing public; people have to actually join to see what we're really on about. Because of this, we have a higher rate of "lurkers" - people who join but never post. We've got 150 lurkers on the books; that's just over half our membership. Compare that to the other coin forum I'm a moderator on, which is "open", where the lurker rate is only 41%. That means about 10% of our "members" joined just to see what we were like, only to decide that this place isn't what they really wanted after all.

The number of people making just one, two or three posts is also quite high - again, about 10%. Many of these are probably people who joined the forum for a specific purpose, to ask just one question. They asked, they were answered, they said thank you and went away happy, never to log on to the forum again. That's OK; helping people is one of the reasons why we're here. Hopefully, they'll remember us again if and when they have another coin-related query, but for the most part, such people are not "collectors".

Other low-post-count people who are long-term members but who past very, very rarely - often called "yetis" because sightings of them are rare and special - are usually those with very specific collecting interests. They'll log on to the forum now and then, just to see if anyone is talking about their favourite subject - and if they are, they'll probably chime in. But they have zero interest in or knowledge about the vast bulk of the forum's contents and discussion.

Other people simply lead busy lives, which lets them focus on leisure activities such as coin forums only occasionally or intermittently. For others, a major change in life circumstances - marriage, divorce, death in the family, new baby, lost a job, got a new job, that sort of thing - means they can no longer be as active on the forum as they once were or thought they might become.

In short, people are people. We don't really have much choice but to take them as they are. You can't force lurkers into becoming active members, any more than you can force a shy, introverted person into becoming a socialite.

Good answer Sap :good:
The main reason for me posting this thread was to "wake up" the 10% :diablo:
I think that strategy worked :)
