As per the title what are your coin collecting goals for 2014, is it to buy a 1925 penny to complete your collection, upgrade a florin set, buy a 1966 proof set, find a nice Australian/World sovereign, find a gem canberra florin (trout) or maybe it's to sell part of your collection and focus on another area.

The gem Canberra is on my list (I have all the others) the proc coins are a target this year plus more sovs :ok:
My goal is to corner the market on WWI pilot caps, turning them into a Uni-Vuitton luxury accessory range once all the sovs are removed.
....hmmm .... and maybe noodle a mule or a wavy if that doesn't work out .....
I am gradually cornering the market on old rusted tobacco tins so Uni and I can start a dynasty. :dodgy:

When I first read the title of this thread I thought EXACTLY the same thing. You might have to fight me for them Uni!
My goal is to pickup an unc dollar starnote but the catch is it mustn't have been fiddled with. I wrote a wantlist years ago and came across it again last year. It's interesting to see where you're at a bit further down the track and what you thought was important may not be so much anymore.

what is your goal dcoin?
Mine is to maintain what I already have and continue with new issues.
If certain coins turn up, gold sovs, half etc and I have the cash, then I shall buy otherwise I shall pass.
I might consider downsizing somewhat but if I do, I do not want cash for the sales but gold or silver bullion.
Get some more books/magazines hopefully, and anything good that comes my way. Nothing specific really.

To find a nice 1955 proof halfpenny, it's the one coin I need to complete my collection, which is a little frustrating. There are a few poor ones out there that turn up, however, hopefully a nice one is for sale at some point this year.

Hey Ozcoins-How many have you got?
I have found 4, been given 1 by a forum member and bought 3 from another forum member.
I have not looked closely enough at them to work out which are 'right' (or even 'close' to right) for a point on the clockface.
I figure it's going to take quite a few, and I still need to sort out proper measurements, but I am happy with the progress so far.
i am aiming also aiming to complete my pre dec proofs to a point.. as the 1955y coppers seem to be out of reach ($$) but acquiring the '55 m penny will have to do. ( rg - there is no '55 m half )
plus a couple of other coppers and silvers and then its done .. easy:dodgy:
just love the coppers, so will expand to earlier years :)
dcoin - eric has a pf61rd if your interested
cheers and happy collecting

In 2014, I will be building on my set registry for pennies and halfpennies and dabbling in world coins when time and money permit.

Slabs .... I get the idea but its not my collecting ideal
For 2014 I'm going to collect 1920 pennies:blush: (Same as every year).

As soon as I work out what CBL and FBL mean, and where all the die markers are, I might start too ;)
First on list to look for. Dot Above Bottom Scroll London Obverse.
CBL = Curved Base Letter
FBL = Flat Based Letters

All varieties (at least of the Australian ones). So far I have:
1920 Dot Below English (a few hundred)
!920 Dot Below CBL (a few thousand+), Melbourne cloned dies (reverse) and mostly Melbourne cloned dies (obverse)
1920 Dot Below FBL (a thousand+), a mix of Calcutta and Melbourne struck dies
1920 Dot Above Sydney with Calcutta struck dies (a thousand+)
1920 Dot Above Perth with Melbourne struck dies (nearly one hundred)
1920 No Dot (probably Melb) (a few hundred)
1920 No Dot Perth with Melbourne struck dies(nearly one hundred)
1920 Double Dots (over a hundred)
and the rare stuff
1920 CBL with 1921 obverse (a few dozen)
1920 Dot Above Top (a few dozen)
1920 Dot Above English (a few).
I need to get 20,000+ before I'll feel confident that I have all possible combinations and die pairs. It is interesting (in a nerdy way) to follow a few hundred coins from a die pair and record the dozens of steps in a deteriorating die. Even more exciting to follow a die as it moves from one die pair to another; have a 1920 obverse (Melbourne struck) that was one of 4 obverse dies paired with a 1921 reverse and the other 3 dies included 1921 Indian obverse (off London supplied hub) and 1922 English obverse.
It gets really complicated to identify the various hubs, derivative masters, cloned dies etc but that is what keeps collecting interesting once you have completed the novices date set.
I also collect the 1921, 1922, 1924 and 1927 pennies with the 1920 Indian obverse.
And pre decimal in general.

I am still very undecided as to what to do this year, do I keep my Decimal's completely up to date, or stop because my Dansco supreme 5, 10 & 50 cent albums are full?
This year being the 100th Anniversary of WW1 & next year 100th Anniversary of Gallipoli, I figure there will be a few commemorative coins released.
Should I stay or should I leave?
I just want Lizzie to fall off the perch, that's where I could end the decimal collection, her mum was 101 when she died Lizzie's only 87, she could go for another 10 to 15 years, sheesh.
How many more pages will fit into the Dansco's?
Maybe leave albums as is & just by what I like, but then if Lizzie does fall off the perch in a couple of years I'll have to rush out & buy all the coins from now till then.
I just don't know what to do????

...... sorry .......
I say procrastinate too. Pick up the issues over the next 2 years for less than issue price.
QuoteI am still very undecided as to what to do this year, do I keep my Decimal's completely up to date, or stop because my Dansco supreme 5, 10 & 50 cent albums are full?
That is the problem with Dansco type albums, They make you collect what they decide is a collection and not what YOU decide is a collection :ok:
The 2x2 albums are far superior as far as archiving coins goes ,you can add whatever you desire in them and as many coins as you like as well without running out of space :good:
As far as sitting back and playing "Catch Up" on coin issues I think that is the "Hard Way" of doing it, For Me picking the coins up as they are issued is easier and nearly always cheaper in the long run.
This year I intend to downsize my "Hoard" and maintain and increase my collections, My Proclamation , sovereigns and the New Zealand pre decimals sets need a fair bit of work on them and I am always sidetracked by coins that take my interest out of the blue.
So as for a strategy for this years collecting I simply don't have one

That's an interesting comment. Clearly you must purchase a very select few RAM issues if you manage to get them cheaper at issue than on the secondary market a few years later.

That's an interesting comment. Clearly you must purchase a very select few RAM issues if you manage to get them cheaper at issue than on the secondary market a few years later.
I normally concentrate on $1, 50 cent and 20 cent coins (Non Gold and rarely silver), A lot of these can be cheaper on the secondary market but I don't have a crystal ball and have NO idea which ones will be cheaper as the years go by.
There is also the quality of the coins to be considered, a large proportion of the $1 25mm coins issued in those ridicules open paper pouches and PVC envelopes can be absolute shockers .
As all my coins in my decimal sets are Uncirculated getting them from circulation isn't an option for me because I rarely get them in good condition.
I am not saying it is always cheaper to get them at issue but it is far easier and you normally get a coin in good shape (There are exceptions :dash1: ).
There is also the advantage of just buying one coin or a set at a time so I don't seem to be forking out so much money at one time.
