I might have to camp out for seven days come Dec 31, 2014. Anyone want to join me?
It was on the news here. He got offered $2,000 for it and knocked it back. Should have taken it, in a few years no-one will care and he'd be lucky to get that much.
I think that there is no question that everyone in here are numismatic nuts when it comes to collecting coins but I think the RAM shouldn't allow someone to get the first coins more than once. Give someone else a go. Just sayin'....
I believe that if one makes the effort then one is entitled to the rewards.
I was the first in line several years ago and I was by myself with no reliefs from family members. This young man, apparently had assistance from his family this year and the same last year. At least he (they) made the effort and got the rewards.
I was the first to mint the Gallipoli Dollar and then again the Master Mint Marked coin by making the effort all by myself. The only reward I got was to get my photo in the Canberra times for the Gallipoli coin and then in the RAM's Mint News for the Master Mint Mark.
My framed coin for 2010 sits high and dry in pride of place in my lounge room.

If you step out of the que then "That's IT" as far as I am concerned.

How does camping out for 5 days assure first in line?
I don't get it?
I was passing by the mint this arvo and at 3:15 pm visited and both mobile presses were shut down.Press 1 fully out of action,Press 2 got back online about 3:25pm . Quality this year is excellent the blanks have no carbon spots.
they sit at the front doors & sleep in the fold out chairs & get sunburnt etc etc

Seriously?
Kid's supposedly a third-generation collector, yet isn't a member here? Blah.
I most certainly wouldn't let my kids or grandkids sleep on the street for 5 days, What are the mint thinking :dash1:
The first in best dressed should be done by ballot or raffle to stop this stupid behavior.
Yes, it seems to be the go these days. Concert tickets, latest game console, phones etc etc. OMG, if Woolies release a 3rd series of animal cards I might have to camp out to be first in!!!! (I hear there's already a queue at Coles in Adelaide for tomorrow :laugh2:)
Certificate is not a coin
Same coin costs $3 at RAM Visitor Gallery MYO press until 31 Dec 2014
I'm thinking of setting up camp outside the mints front door next week to assure I am first in line for the 2015 coin.
Camping out is what people do for concert or sports tickets and big sales here. Some places the owners issue numbered cards or bracelets to alleviate the lines.

Have you been there?
Its not exactly "on the street". Lots of grass as far as the eye can see (well, as far as the freeway anyway), big carpark and not much else nearby. Not quite the back o' Bourke, but hardly Kings Cross either.
Of more concern would be the lack of accessible amenities after hours. Bit of a hike to the nearest dunny IIRC.
The ammenities issue is a worry. I think RAM security would be around.
John James Hospital is straight across the road so the amenities there would be accessible
but yeah - for a family of 5 it is a bit of a concern
They were there last year (when we were). They also won something, I think it was the last coin for 2011? I am getting my years mixed up now. Think they got the last one for 2011 & the first for 2012 year and the year before a lady got the last coin for 2010 - chucked a wobbly because she was up in the galleries when her number was called, then they redrew - a teenager got it, the lady chucked the biggest spack attack - the Mint gave her the coin and the teenager a consolation gift pack. I thought that it stank myself and it soured my feelings about the whole business.
Maybe the RAM should disband this "last and first mintage". That would stop all this arguing and carryon.
But, in saying that, all of us have some sort of competitive spirit in built. I want to be the best, the first, the greatest, etc.
Until we ourselves can curb this aggressiveness towards being first, then it will continue forever.
Amen.

you in the ACT runway?
and what your excuse for the first 100 - or were you there?
we had a very good excuse - we were up the road at the Hyatt - getting our money's worth of R & R !!!!
Yes GS - I reckon they should have a ballot
though, I do also agree with the 'fun' of the competitive spirit
but it can get nasty when the outcome isn't what the competitive spirit wanted!! for sure
I have to admit I thought last years was sus - that the one family got both coins - even through a raffle - just me being jealous I guess (everyone wants to be a winner!!) - but great publicity for the Mint for the 'feel good' story!!

What mobile presses Runway?
They are both ex mobile presses Mr BM...you know that...and that is what my reference was about ...that's all I think of these presses...the main press C mm is usually available by end of month :yahoo::yahoo:
are you a local yokel Runway?
hey
I just re-read the newspaper article about the triplet Harley who won the first coin again this year
and guess what???
he ALSO won the last coin for 2013 - as he won it last year for 2012 as well
gee lucky guy ... indeed
perhaps he should have sold the coin for the $2,000 so that the family could invest in a portable toilet trailer for next year - as the newspaper article says that they use a bucket for the over night toilet!!! ,eeeeiiiirrrr
for sure they will here for 7 days next time ... very cheap holiday for the whole mob!
Runway-I'd hate to be a nuisance but both the Visitor gallery presses are converted RAM Production Presses when they changed the minting machines a few years ago. These same presses were located in the old visitor gallery when I minted the Gallipoli coin(s) many years ago.
Since then, the feeding plate of both presses have been converted to a single coin feed plate so the coin you personally mint, is the coin one receives.
If you want to call these visitor gallery presses PORTABLEs then an army would be need to move them.
If I am not mistaken, there is a sign alongside the present visitor gallery presses acknowledging that they were both former production presses off the Production Floor.
In response to the "C" Mint Mark coins being available in late January then you are quite correct as those minted coins go into the four coin sets etc. This can be verified by the reeding location on the side of the coins. In most cases, visitor gallery minted coins have a different reeding start than the production presses.
The present "portable presses" only emboss the "C", "M", "B", "H", "A:" etc in an incuse (counterstamp) on various show coins about the place which can cost anywhere between $3 -$13 per coin..
Not getting into the reeding positions again. If there was maintenance on the press as suggested earlier on the first day there may well be differences already. One major difference of the gallery presses and the mobile press is that the gallery presses strike the entire coin and the mobile press only strikes the counterstamp.

In reality the counter stamped coins are in fact PMD.
A bit like the chop marks on trade and pillar dollars of old :ok:
Just because it is a mint employee that does the stamping doesn't get away from the fact that the counterstamp IS added "Post Mint"

Gosh Goldy you will not be told will you. Reeding positions can change every time the collar is removed from a press and cannot be used as an indicator of anything unless you can provide proof that a collar die has not been removed from a press during the production life of a pair of dies. And you can't provide that proof.
I should add to this (because what I wrote may seem a bit abrupt) that this reeding issue was flogged to death on the old ACBO forum. Goldy was trying to tell everyone then that you could identify the coins from the different gallery presses by reeding position. So PPH and I made a point of going back to the RAM several times in the same year and minting gallery press coins each time. And the reeding position was different every single time.
That same year we were lucky enough to be at the RAM while they were pulling the dies out of the gallery press and it was obvious that the collar die (which really just looks like a steel donut) was not keyed and could be installed into the press at any angle relative to the obverse/reverse dies. Which basically means that the reeding position (from the gallery press coins at least) is 100% random. Now, perhaps the production press coins are different but given that the gallery presses are production presses anyway then I very much doubt that.
So what's the upshot of this? Reeding position is meaningless. It can change whenever the collar die is removed from a press and unless you own the entire mintage of a particular type of dollar then you cannot say that the reeding position is the same for all coins of that type.
Explained succinctly Mark.!! Thanks for sharing.!! :good: Appreciate the work that people on this forum present, wonderful references for the future.!
yup
my coin dealer reckons the same (and he is ex RAM)
the reeding positions mean zip
Quote from: 'markn' pid='38788' dateline='1388701819'Reeding position is meaningless.
:agreed:
Besides which, I've never understood the fixation with which press produced a given coin. Its meaningless. The only way it would make any difference at all is if the dies were different, either by design, say large/small obverses for example, or damage, say cracks and cuds. And in both these cases the coin faces would tell the story without needing to resort to an unkeyed collar to try and tell them apart.
But regardless, I have no doubt this will continue to be debated for many years to come. *sigh*
OK ok, I surrender on the reeding positions.
I like to know which die or press a coin might be made from
that sort of makes it all more interesting
easier with older coins, not quite so with the newer decimals
