Looks like someone had a prosperous start to the new year .....Bastards :dash1:
That's why mine is in a safety deposit box(s) in Melbourne.
Too close for comfort for some, scary for all.

Lets hope that's not brissyboy getting robbed again.
Kedron , Brisbane , is the area that I sent a coin to so maybe they have one of my ex coins too.
I sold a 2001 offset $ 1 dollar on ebay to a guy in that area a few months ago for $ 59.00 + postage .
good money for that coin but the coin was a very good one .
,, kel ,,
Very close to home. Only a kilometer or so from my place and I've been looking around there for a new house. Relax Kel as Upper Kedron is, strangely, nowhere near Kedron.
thanks steve , I never knew that .. ,, kel ,,

I get the mistake a lot from tradesmen who make the same assumption. I think it is because Kedron is so named because it is on the waterway "Kedron Brook". Upper Kedron is up at the start of that waterway so I think "Upper Kedron" is actually a shortened version of "Upper Kedron Brook".
Not that it matters one iota.:winkextra::winkextra:

Mate I would clean dunnies every day if I could find loot like that :good:
Wow AJ ..... I guess they'd be feeling pretty flushed at the moment!
This version of the story from the ABC website says that "the house had bleach all through it". Why did they use bleach? Does anyone know?
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-01-01/wheelie-bin-used-to-steal-bullion-from-a-brisbane-home/5181294
Dreamcatcher
Maybe they wiped their fingerprints off everything? *shrug*
Actually.... a quick search turned this up:
"New York - A group of thieves in New York City decided to try a method they saw in a movie to cover their tracks after their crimes. Their plan entailed using bleach in order to erase their DNA from the crime scenes.
Their inspiration came from the 2010 movie "The Town" starring Ben Affleck. Affleck plays a character who is a leader of a ruthless group of thieves. They conduct a string of robberies and pride themselves on being able to steal anything they desire without being caught.
According to the New York Daily News, the thieves went on a 14-month long crime spree targeting several businesses in Brooklyn. They targeted businesses such as pizzerias, corner stores, and discount stores. They were even able to steal money out of ATMs. They would often cut power lines and use miners' headlamps to see in the dark.
Police dubbed them the "splash-and-dash" bandits, because they would pour bleach in the places they robbed in order to cover up their DNA evidence. They even reportedly poured bleach over ATMs and cash registers after they were emptied.
Reuters reports that the thieves were able to net a total of $217,000 during their crime spree.
A total of 4 men have been arrested in connection with the theft ring, while another suspect is currently incarcerated on an unrelated charge. It is unknown how the police were able to track the thieves and bring them to justice."
Now, as far as I knew, bleaching a crime scene was only effective to mask blood spatter, because it gives everything a blue glow when sprayed with Luminol. But maybe these guys got their wires crossed, or watched too much CSI. Can't see the relevance for a simple robbery....
Would help with disguise by changing your hair colour.! :laughingneqw:
I think the practice gained some infamy around Brisbane several years ago when the crime scene of the murder of 3 children was similarly contaminated. I understand it is to cover DNA.
Reading the paper this morning several of the coins were located a couple of hundred meters away by the road and the plastic cases hold fingerprints very well so hopefully they weren't wearing gloves. The Qld Police put up crime maps on their website and there haven't been any other break and enters around there recently so it looks like his house was targeted specifically. ATM he is casting a wide net and suspects people he has talked to, those he's communicated with on forums or perhaps even those he has purchased from.

yup - very wide net "or a bullion dealer who knows my address?" hummm that is pointing fingers!!
I feel for the fella - but at least they weren't home and they have their life/s. Others don't fare quite so well with that sort of available money in the house
but gee ... do you keep that amount of stuff in your home?
seems odd that he couldn't have it insured or vaulted at a bank
sounds like an inside job of sorts? i.e. someone knew the stuff was there & where the safe was (Det Insp Robbie here - ha ha) maybe it was the cleaner?
I guess it is a warning about what information you disclose about your collection & location etc etc
And how do you crack open a safe? I'm assuming with $200,000 worth of bullion it must be a reasonably big one. Dynamite?
RG's link has a photo of it. It was bolted to the floor.
The robbers would be better off if they gave themselves up to the police because if this bloke and his Mates get hold of them they may just "Dissapear" :ok:
and so they should. ,, kel ,,

I am ex Army (Infantry) and I would make the buggers "Disappear" if they took my coins .
I have all I need .
Remote location , front end loader and a perfectly good firearm :diablo: :good:

I feel sorry for them, but if I could afford $200,000 worth of bullion, I'd have invested in a safe better than the one pictured.
one of our local coin dealers has a walk in ex-bank vault under his house
apparently it is very cool in summer
i'd be terrified that someone would lock me in the thing - or that I might even accidently lock myself in
another bloke who I know here has a shipping container in his yard - don't know it if gets sweltering hot though
I don't have any rare or expensive coins to warrant such sophisticated storage
any silly buggar who takes my 1000 x 1964 pennies would get about $25 off a dealer for his trouble!
What forum would he have been frequenting for his bullion trades does anyone know?
Look out for cheapies on ebay.......................

Thanks jozk123. I'll check it out.
I looked earlier and he has a post on silverstackers about the theft.
It's terrible this has happened, but I am surprised that so much seems to have been so poorly protected....
There has been some discussion about someone he knew through the forums/trades being involved, but I doubt a planned theft would be using a wheely bin to make a getaway.
There has been mention in the news about 3 or 4 other gold/silver bullion thefts around Brisbane in the last few months and the possibility of a connection. If they had his name then it wouldn't be difficult to find out where he lived but that is in a dead end street so any strange vehicles would have been noticeable.
Also was it just luck for them that he happened to be out on New Years Eve or, again, did someone have inside knowledge. Appears the only room they ransacked was the bedroom where he happened to keep the safe.
Don't like his chances of recovering them but sometimes luck falls on the good guys side.
it was the butler
Det. Insp. Robbie is certain about that
New years eve is a thieves paradise and they take full advantage of empty houses, NOT at my place tho I don't DO the new years eve thing any more and am in bed by 8.30-9.00.
See this (http://www.couriermail.com.au/news/queensland/corporal-christopher-lunt-loses-life-savings-after-thieves-steal-gold-bullion-from-safe/story-fnihsrf2-1226793396209) article and read the key points.
1. "An online forum for bullion collectors could be linked to a Brisbane burglary that's robbed an Afghanistan veteran of his life-savings"
2. "I've been really looking into putting that away in safe deposit boxes which was only going to happen in two weeks' time when we move. Unfortunately it was just bad timing."
Answer.
1. Be careful what you say or do here
2. Make sure your stuff is safe and don't put off making it that way.
3. Always use a PO Box.
4. Buy and use timers to turn on lights and appliances even when you're not home.
If anyone ever found my house " I live 20ks out of town and a couple of ks from the dirt road" They would have to get past this beast to get my stuff :) :laugh2:

That would make it easy for the cops to catch them.. just look for crims with mangled, chewed-up toes!
GEE mate, looks like a natural born killer to me and would easy rip ya throat out :D
You must mean business with that dog on duty. I see you "Toeing the Line."
