Title: Identify this coin
Post by: trout on December 25, 2013, 09:07:46 AM
This Crown sized coin weighs 24.1g and is Silver.
Any ideas about this particular coin?

A very similar coin, the one I have on my desk is larger than a crown so about 40mm.

I can't quite make out the province but I'm pretty sure it's KM#16.1 Netherlands - Gelderland 1620 Rijksdaalder (48 stuivers).

Thanks Mark.
This is not my coin, it is my brother in laws.
Any idea of a value for this and would it be considered a "Colonial" coin?

It looks like a shipwreck coin and judging by the filename it might have come from the Batavia?  Does it have certificates?

That one is pretty close, the 1/4 on the thing in the right hand is different.
This coin is a shipwreck coin :ok:

No certificates But this did indeed come from the Batavia wreak.
Before the wreak site was officially recognised fishermen and their families "souvenired" a number of these coins, this is one of those coins.
My missus family were some of the pioneers of the crayfishing industry in Geraldton 50 odd years ago.

From what I understand it's technically illegal to hold shipwreck coins from Australian wrecks without certificates.  So the value in Australia is zero.  If you want to find out what to do with it to make it "legal" you'd need to contact the WA museum (who I believe "own" all Australian shipwreck coins).

The value of this piece is irrelevant, it is and always will be an interesting piece especially for my brother in law that free dived for it  and got it way before the museum was involved.
I am not about to tell him to hand it over after he has kept it for more than 40 years, regardless of the regulations.
The museum recovered thousands of these and  NO they are NOT on display in Geraldton, So what is the drama with 1 being in private hands that will be passed on to future generations.
It is not only a part of My towns history it is also an important part of my family history and I am buggered if I will let some dopey eyed government official steal it .
It is now safely heat sealed in a 2.5x 2.5 saflip for posterity :good:
As a footnote many of these were sold to dealers in Perth at one stage for not much more than melt, I wonder what happened to those coins

You asked about the value and I told you and I told you to find out a real value you'd need to "legalise" the coin.  I wasn't suggesting he did anything wrong or that you should hand the coin over because it was wrong to own it.  I was just answering your question.

No worries Mate :friends:
The last time I saw one of these I was only 16 (43 years ago) working on Johnny Alchins cray boat, He and Max Cramer were the original divers on the Batavia wreak.
They brought these coins up in large lumps and I was privileged to look at these.
I was pretty stoked to find it amongst all the jars and tins (now in the bin) of coins in my brother in laws collection and wanted to share :)
I have put all his "Collectable" coins in saflips and have heat sealed them for him, Mainly as a "Thank You" for letting me look through the collection and also to protect them from any further damage.
Looking through that collection was one of my best Christmas gifts for a long time :dance2:
