Well I was sussin out some of my goodies and this really cracked me up as I thought all the sheep on all our coins are alive and look pretty good but looking at the kiwi proof dollars and thought they must not think much of them like we do, so here for your viewing pleasure is a dead sheep :laugh2: now ya can't tell me that's not funny :winkextra: but poor little thing :( hung out to dry like that :laugh2: sorry can't help it :)

I was going to come up with a couple of Kiwi jokes to prove that they don't hate sheep, But I contained and behaved myself
it just looked so funny when you look at all our coins where they near look like they're smiling :D I don't know if I like the shilling or the 91 ram's head better as they're both nice
They love sheep and say the lambs taste best!
cough cough, umm yeah I've heard that..I'm still trying to be good but gee it's hard :winkextra:
While I have no particular comment regarding New Zealanders and sheep I can tell you that what you're seeing there is a fairly common representation of the Golden Fleece (the one from Greek mythology) and it's been used on coins for hundreds of years. I am not exactly sure what it's supposed to suggest with regards to New Zealand but I imagine it's got something to do with sheep-based prosperity or something similar.
EDIT
According to Wiki the golden fleece represents the New Zealand farming industry.
In the coloured version of the coat of arms (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coat_of_arms_of_New_Zealand) it is obvious that the fleece is golden in colour.
And yes, this is the standard heraldic representation of a fleece, with head, feet and all. It was used on Australian tokens, too, as this cartoon in an old coin club magazine I have illustrates:

One learns a lot of things from this forum and I have just been taught something else that will be put into my brain box for possible future use.
Many thanks Sapyx.

I always thought it was symbolic of the sheep trade, and showed how they weigh them.

Ha! Nah mate, its just the $1 notes on the other side. :diablo:
:scratch_one-s_head: so just wondering, do you have a chart made up where you have like 1 lamb= 400 fifty cents and so on, or are you like the banks and change sheep when changing denominations like how they just press a button on their scales..just a thought :winkextra:

Yup. And of course they use clipped and unclipped sheep to set the differing buy/sell prices. Gotta love arbitrage. ;)
