I just bought my first one of these, very nice coin.
I was wondering why is there such a massive price difference in coins which appear to be of similar quality.
Good quality coins can be had for sub $15 others go for $50 or more.
Are there different varieties of this coin?
all comes down to the grade and quality of the coin
This is one of those examples when if you see an unc one in a dealers books and it's priced at $300 you know it's been priced out of the catalogue. In the real world graded unc examples can be had for about $100.
yeah and you notice the big diff when talking slabbed coins as the price jump with just one grade can be quite different
Here's a few more if you are interested.

Not so much a variety but a strike/die characteristic, look for the steps as some coins (even Unc) can be only 2 steps whilst others can be 3 to 4 steps.
I agree about the massive price differences, I purchased a NGC AU58 for under $30 and it is beautiful, only the faintest hint of circulation under the loupe but otherwise nicer than most MS63-64 coins. Anything that makes MS65 will add another $200-300 to a comparable $100-150 MS63 coin.
A PCGS MS66 Canberra florin sold for $2400 last year ,so far only 9 have been graded at ms66 , my guess a ms67(only 1 graded) would sell for $4k +
Then there's the proof canberra's big $$$$$ they start at 6k and go up

I am fairly certain the single MS67 graded is a proof too. Just incorrectly attributed by PCGS several years ago.
This MS65+ sold for $2,000

Unknown, mate. There's a bit of a cold war going on here right now, which is very depressing. They're sticking to their guns about selling up and heading overseas to die, and I'm looking for alternatives.
So far, I've got a potential home for my coins in a corner of an underground vault. They'll be secure, at least for a few years, but they won't be convenient to access.
I had a look inside my 7.5m square shed while I was visiting last week, and its heartbreaking. Birds and mice and spiders and water all got in under, over and around the sliding doors, and most of what's in there is ruined. They even ate the plastic dust covers! So no way I can park anything there I might want to actually keep, it would all be ruined in a few months. Computers are about as delicate as coins, as are books and suchlike.
I'm waiting to hear from the agent as to whether the block in Moulamein has planning for a house. If it doesn't, all I can do is pitch a tent there 28 days each year. If it does, then I need to scare up enough cash to build something to qualify for the government grants, and that's a problem. I certainly can't borrow. :(
Failing that, The next affordable options are up around Bourke, Cobar, and other remote locations. Not great when it comes to medical needs.
Anyway, this is waaaaaaaaay off-topic. Looks like I've threadjacked another one, eh? :diablo:

Bargain :)
I have the odd one or two of these coins
They are by far my favourite Australian pre decimal coin.
EF - aUnc coins are quite easily found due to the fact that these were hoarded quite heavily :good:
Anything MS63 and above are a bit harder but they are out there.
Look at the mace "Orbs" and the shell on the reverse for wear as these are the high points on the coin and the first to show wear :ok:
Also look at the steps there should be 3 steps on a well struck coin, however most of them do not show 3 steps.
