Title: Coin Collecting Software(Australia)
Post by: Episoda on December 10, 2013, 02:30:17 PM
:read:G'day all, I was just wondering if anyone knows where to get any Coin Collecting Software apart from ebay. Seems the only one i can find is around $30 and wondered if anyone else knows how to get one please? I have windows 8 if that helps and have currently got my collection on spreadsheet, but would much prefer a database where i can put pictures of my collection. This obviously would be for my personal use only. $30 on ebay isn't a problem for me, I just wondered what else was available in Australia. :read:

I do apologise if i have not done this post properly, I just saw the rules on buy/sell/trade etc and if you have to take this post down, I understand. I am reasonably new to the site and didnt realise this post may not be done.

First up, welcome aboard. Hope you're enjoying your stay, and that you both learn and share along with the rest of us. :)

I don't think I've ever seen any software that was worth the description. Probably because its a very limited market and there are easier ways for developers to make a buck.

That said, one or several of a spreadsheet, database or website can provide most if not all of what you'd need. I use all three, and each has advantages and disadvantages.

I'd see about grabbing a decent database (I use Filemaker Pro, which I bought maybe 20 years ago and love dearly) and learning to use it effectively.

Also learn a little basic HTML if you haven't already. Even if you're only accessing local pages on your own machine or server, its hard to beat the flexibility of a well-thought-out webpage for information density on a specific item.

And of course spreadsheets do their particular thing very very well. Its hard to beat a quickie sheet for recording finds, values or whatever details you want to keep on your collection.

I certainly wouldn't bother with commercial software, even if it was locally produced. There are just too many variables and noone is going to create a solution that addresses them all.

NP. Oh, and I see from this article there's a new version of FMP as of last week:

http://blogs.computerworld.com/databases/23198/filemaker-pro-13-going-30

Oh, and reading through system requirements, such as

http://help.filemaker.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/7638/

I'm now of the opinion that FMP v7 is still the most compatible solution, as later versions break more and more options. Clearly not supported (this is Apple after all, who don't care about last week's investments by its clients), but readily obtainable from your favourite 'alternative' source. ;)

Appears to be Windows-only.
The coin module is documented here:

and I see they have a limited trial version available. Might be worth a shot.

Hi Episoda,

FWIW if you are using a spreadsheet like Excel, you can add Hyperlinks to a separate folder of images of the various coins you have.

I keep all my collection on a spreadsheet and the last cell after the notes/comments cell on each line has a hyperlink to a folder containing jpeg images of the coin concerned.

It is a simple matter of just highlighting the cell, clicking on the insert tab and then the hyperlink tab and naming the file/location.

I believe there are visual advantages using a spreadsheet over a database in the ease of being able to sort the collection according to certain criteria and be able to see the results visually - personal preference, of course!

Cheers

I'm glad we agree on something Mark!

The beauty of using a spreadsheet is the ease at which you can sort, add or change the size or format of cells or columns or rows  and you are not limited to either the size or number of images that can be hyperlinked - just one link per cell across a row.

The only thing you have to learn (and remember) are the rules associated with the various types of sorting functions that can be done - whole sheet, single columns, expanded choices etc.

Cheers

Just don't move the images (spring clean, tidy up or reorganise) or the links will break.

Of course all of this also applies to databases. ;)

Horses for courses... I use both, as well as an assortment of other tools, and its just a matter of picking the right tool for the job at hand. Kind of like not using a screwdriver as a chisel or a G-clamp as a hammer. ;)

I started to build databases for my coins but quite frankly it boored me silly.
I much rather simply open my albums and look at the coins than open a database to check on them :ok:

Hehe.. fortunately, the money bin proper was all sourced at face value (well, plus a little petrol and time I guess). So as long as I ignore about five grand of NCLT from my early years, and the odd moment of weakness courtesy of various forum members, its all good. Might even be slightly in the black, if I ever find someone to buy it. ;)

Hi
Utter noob, etc...

With the spreadsheets, how detailed do you get with them? ie what column headers do you have? I'm assuming the usual: denomination, description, grade, year, mint mark (if any). Any others? I really haven't kept any records of when and where I bought them except with all the M mintmarks I have were done on the mobile presses by myself. Mainly collect $1 coins in all forms (MYO, Commemorative, subscription, etc) and some proof sets if I like them.
Any info would be appreciated.
Many thanks :)

Hi, and welcome aboard. Hope you enjoy your stay.

You will find different people record different things. Some go into great detail, even including date and location found, or price paid. Others just have basic info. It really comes down to your needs. There is quite a difference between a catalogue telling you what exists, and an inventory documenting the value of your collection.

So its really all about what YOUR needs are, and how much time and effort you're prepared to expend on paperwork. :)

With Excel, I guess you could say that I'm bordering on Advanced level as I use it a lot for work (3 line formulas and pivot tables with the occasional macro thrown in) and could analyse anything to death from a warehousing/inventory perspective. I don't think I want to go down that path with this but am very happy with the info that was given.

Many thanks! :D

Tigergirl,

I use my spreadsheet for notes and coins so have a few different columns:

*TYPE     (coin value, note value,  PNC,  collector set, lunar series, bullion value  etc.)
*YEAR
*PREFIXES   (notes and collector items)
*RENNIKS CODE   (notes)
*DATE PURCHASED
*SUPPLIER
*COST
*POSTAGE
*GRADE      (Proof, Specimen, UNC,  VF, EF etc.)
*Current McDonald Valuation
*CASH VALUE
*REMARKS   (this column contains descriptions to identify variations in items etc.)
*LINKs to picture files

Obviously column widths vary as required.

Cheers

Thanks Peter for your info. I think mine will be a combination of both suggestions that have been put forward. Whilst I can't remember when I purchased them (mostly at coin shows for reasonable prices), I can still remember some acquisitions which have nearly double in value since I purchased them. One being the Victoria Cross $1 and all the MYO $1 I got from the Royal Melb Shows. Won't set the coin world on fire but it's a start.

And yes, it doesn't matter if it's black & white... lol

This year I have I have been slack keeping cattle dogs up to date, so I thought I should get them done before the year ends.

Hey look what I found forgot I had these.
Was there not some kind of issue regarding these when they came out.?? Not in Macca's maybe someone can remember.

maybe its because this is the same design as the goose dollar and this coin IS legal tender.
Whereas the goose dollar isn't.
I picked one of these up at the anda show in Perth .

Interest,

The only mention in Mackas is on p361 as the full set of rejected designs  (7500/3344 mintage).

In the latest Renniks (p 120) both the set and the ANDA release of the 20cents are mentioned - however, Renniks implies that 7500 sets were minted and 2500 20cents minted.

So both books each have slightly different omissions!

Cheers

Peter  (notcb)

Interest,

Just checked the Perth Mint mintages

http://www.perthmint.com.au//documents/2009_Perth_Mint_Numismatic_Coins120813V3.pdf

and the declared mintage on the ANDA release was 2115 out of 2500.

Cheers

That is probably what the issue was that the Perth mint were advertising that only 2,500 of this 20cent were minted but in actual fact there were 10,000 minted.
But as they state on the back of this show item,
only 2,500 will be released individually by the Perth Mint.

I'm thinking there was an argument with PM, about what is the real mintage, because there were saying on their adds for the ANDA show that these coin had a mintage of only 2,500.
Forgetting about the other 7,500.

If you look at the Perth Mint official mintages:

http://www.perthmint.com.au//documents/2...0813V3.pdf

you will see there are two separate listings:

(1)  The set of coins   - mintage 7500 but actually declared mintage of 3344 only

and in a separate section,

(2)  The 20cent special ANDA release - mintage 2500 but actually declared mintage of 2115.

I can't see a PM worker opening up the 385 specially prepared cards and putting them into the remaining sets!!!!

*****

So on those published figures, there should exist 2115 plus 3344 =  5459 20 cent Swan coins.

Cheers
