Post by: Robster on December 02, 2013, 12:32:46 AM
A night full of drama.! Back fence neighbour's smoke alarm went off, so I jumped over but couldn't get anyone's attention.!
Rang 000 and got the fire brigade to attend. Elderly neighbour had fallen asleep with dinner on the stove ( too many sherries).!
Woken up eventually and all o.k. now.!! :yahoo:

"Jumped over"? Great! Now who's going to pay for your phone call? (Just Joshing.) Now who knows where the term 'Josh' came from? This is a coin related question.

Quick thinking Robster. Must have had too many sherries to sleep through a smoke alarm.

QuoteNow who knows where the term 'Josh' came from?
Official verdict (from several sources) is that origin is obscure and first recorded use was;
"Look out in future, and if you must Josh, why, give a private one."
St. Louis Reveille of 1845.

'Josh' was the guy who allegedly gold-plated the 1881 Liberty nickels without the 'Cents' and passed them off as five dollar gold pieces.  There is some doubt whether he really existed.

You're right John. The Liberty Head nickel (aka 'V' nickel) came out in 1883 and the reverse just had a 'V' signifying '5' for 5 cents. Josh Tatum, who was both deaf and couldn't speak, gold washed these nickels and purchased many items with them because they looked like the $5 gold piece. Of course, the obv. had a similar 'Liberty Head' but the rev. of the $5 gold had an eagle. No doubt Josh put the 'gold' nickel on the counter obv. side up. He was caught by the local marshal and wasn't prosecuted because he promised he wouldn't gold wash the nickels again....and as the story goes, he didn't. Due other people doing the same thing, the U S mint put the word 'CENTS' below the 'V' on the reverse during the same year - 1883.....thus, 2 styles. Whether this story is true or not, I don't know.....and I'm not Joshing anyone.

Important things we learned last night.!!
 Don't wait for someone else to 'take a look', two units each side had elderly people who simply didn't hear the smoke alarm despite it going off for over 20 minutes.!
'Jim', the nearest neighbour stood with me whilst the fireman cleared the kitchen and whilst the smoke alarm was still putting out its' shrill warning and said 'pity the smoke alarm didn't sound', I would have done something.!!
Secondly the stove was electric so the firemen said if nothing else turn the power off at the meter until help arrives. Good idea except the Housing Trust locks the meter boxes to avoid "vandalism'.!
Just happy all turned out positively.!!:wavemulticolor:

The most important thing is, you checked up and found that nobody else was doing anything about the situation and took charge then instigated a rescue.
WELL DONE :yahoo:
