stamped into them. Does anyone know how these come about?
I read something about it a while back and think maybe Robbie knows but not sure about that.
Counterstamp
On the older coins , I mean 1700's and back often have "Chop Marks' in them. they did this to ascertain if they were real silver and not fakes.
The modern coins are simply PMD .
Hey Lacey did you mean like this one on ebay?
ebay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/1984-Stamped-1-coin-/190982288464?pt=AU_Coins2&hash=item2c776e7450&_uhb=1)
Lol, if that one sells PPH I'll be off to supercheap to get a full set of punches!
Just kidding ....... surely they can't be serious ........
..... and don't call me Shirley ..... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0A5t5_O8hdA)
yep PP i think irene was asking about the decimal coins ones ,
My theory on those numbered coins , i reckon the old PMG /telstra might have issued them to their phone box mechanics , to test the coin mechanism on the public phones ,and to possibly stop them pilfering or maybe even vending/poker machine mechanics , to see if the machines spit out the correct coinage in a certain order.:-/
I remember years ago when i was a pinball wizard hehe the pinball mechanic would have coins with painted crosses on them , so he could retrieve the coins out of the coin hopper after his repairs .
I have a number of these all on dollars. I don't expect that they're worth more than a dollar but have kept them for novelty and in case I figure out one day how they really came about. The Telecom idea is a good one, what cost a dollar back then though!
I reckon it's the kids at school doing metalwork as a subject. Alphabetical and numerical punch sets and some reasonably soft metal to test it on.
Here's one I found some time ago.

Did you buy a vowel Czark or is it part of the secret code authorising the launch of US nuclear missiles?

That's a very good theory. My uncle was OIC of the section that maintained stamp dispensers. They used rolls of black test stamps with white lettering on them. Can't recall exactly what they said, but I have some stashed someplace. I tried using them on First Day Covers, but the sneaky sods postmarked around them so as to cancel only the real stamps. :(
I do have vague memories of seeing one or two coins with numbers punched on them around then, but never thought to ask if they were part of the test thing. Can't ask now, as he passed away a few years ago. :(
Would love to see one of those stamps Fulvio.!!!!! :beg:

I tend to keep them as curiosities.
I have a few number/letter punch sets. I could offer to do custom designs...but, I won't.
[attachment=3224]Bit off a dig up but found this $2 yesterday, still no known reason ??? Like a tagger with a paint can ???:yahoo:
Defaced coins don't interest me
:laugh2: When a list is made of people who are not interested in defaced coins, then I think we should put runway at the very top.
Personally I wouldn't say no to a holey dollar or dump.
Come on ....... I've opened the can of worms for you now!
I worked my one out... Really Good Coin :P

Junk and illegal as well anyone who has a hammer stamp set of numbers and letters could do this, can't see the point of any interest in these defaced coins
:laugh2: ...... hook, line and sinker ...... got a bite!
I'm glad you have clarified it from "Defaced coins" to "these defaced coins".

Yeah, totally agree but the only difference is that the Holey Dollar and dump, as they became known were LEGAL Tender.
Oh, by the way, will you stop beating up that poor horse, it is already gone to horses heaven!!!!!!!!!!!
:laugh2: .... On ya Goldie ..... it was once a Unicorn, but was dehorned by the constant beating.
