Title: Tip Shops
Post by: trout on November 26, 2013, 04:16:13 PM
Recycling stations , Tip Shops whatever you want to call them are awesome places to get stuff that you need at bargain basement prices :dance2:
Whenever I get home from working away I normally have to do a tip run (NO rubbish pick up from the farm) and I always call into the Tip Shop on the way home.
There is always something "Handy" there , I have gotten ALL my big plant pots from there at a fraction of the price at Bunnings :good:
Anyone else have any stories about finds at the Tip Shop?

A year or two ago we used to check them out once every few weeks. That was when we were restoring antiquie furniture that we picked up from Lifeline or the Salvo's.The tip shop was good for bits and pieces but have got no more space for any more furniture or other stuff
as the house is chockablock so spend my time on coins and plants thesedays

I bought a set of "mags" for my vehicle. Cost me $600 for four; secondhand with good tyres.
A few weeks later my son bought an identical wheel (along with several others to match some he had) for $5 each at the tip shop. Was actually better condition than the ones I had!

My wife got an oak side table with barley twist legs, matching the dining suite we restored...free.

I can feel a pilots cap comment coming.

Last visit to the in-laws at Mildura took us to the aroundagain (http://www.aroundagain.org.au/), a very fitting name for re-using unwanted stuff.

The days of taking a trailer load of junk down the tip and bringing a trailer load of Gems back is long gone mate :dash1:

That being said you will find items far cheaper at the tip shop than at the second hand dealers or the newspaper adds :good:
It is just the way things are these days Mate :ok:
The Missus picked up a 5 gallon bucket of  tech screws for $5 AWSOME :wavemulticolor:

Sorry trout but to me "it's just the way it is" is piss poor excuse for being greedy and I don't know about anywhere else but I can tell you the rubbish all over the road is becoming a joke and they even dump it at the gates of the dumps or where ever they want, it's turning oz into one HUGE dump so I reckon make it free like in QLD, true I went to dump with a mate and I was blown away that you only show your licence go in dump and take a trailor of mulch home and only cost you fuel but here they charge like wounded bull and wonder why, very sad for the country but it's just the way it is :( Sorry mate but this is why thing aren't getting better, the old "she'll be right" was good but not in todays age ;)

In Brisbane, we get mailed 5 'free' dump vouchers for green waste and 5 'free' for general waste each financial year (with 100 kg load limit) and I have absolutely no doubt that the cost is built in to our rates.  Nothing is free these days.

Once all the vouchers are used in any financial year, we have to pay.

Why would anyone EVER give away free worm food, let alone pay for the priviledge????? Nothing organic should ever go into a tip, or a compost heap for that matter.

I don't take organic waste to the tip -too useful to waste. And I don't get the "mulch" from the tip -it used to be free but now they sell it. It's full of shredded plastic rubbish because people are too lazy to separate their rubbish items.

We don't have to pay to take a ute load of rubbish to the tip here.
So there is NO random dumping because people are unable to afford to pay a fee :ok:
The Mulch I wouldn't touch with a pointed stick It "reeks" YUCK .
I am happy to buy the blocks of coir mulch at Bunning's and use that.

the Tip shop does charge for items they have salvaged But at a tiny fraction of what they would cost anywhere else :good:

Crikey my patio I just built is 7m x 15m and I think it cost me about $30 to build after some scrounging and getting the odd item at the tip shop :dance2::)

here with the op shop bins

if they are full and you put stuff beside the bins - $$ fine for dumping
if there is stuff beside the bins and you grab some it - $$ fine - you are stealing (dumped rubbish???)

then you can't put this or that and so on in the bins

honestly - I almost don't bother anymore with recycling - it is all too political

vinnies out at Tuggeranong - have great set up
bins in the outside wall of the store - glass here - clothing here etc
no BS - just drop it off

if we take it to the other op shop and carry it out the back for sorting then they are happy

We had some really cool  gold looking chandeleirs that we replaced and didn't need, but they were still good! So I put them on Gumtree and within the hour a lovely hippy lady came and took them to hang in her trees in her back garden. A win all round.

The day we laid the back lawn we had some spare, it was cheaper to order a little more and get free delivery than order less and pay delivery. So I put that on Gumtree too and some guy loaded up his Tarago and he was happy too.

edit: Oh wait then there was the excess paving sand we had that we put on Gumtree and a lovely guy stopped by with his wagon and shovelled it all in and took the wonky wheelbarrow too!

And Mark just reminded me of the intermittently faulty washing machine I never wanted to see again and a lovely young fellow came around and took it to convert into a flower pot. He decided that it was probably better than his own and thought he might use it!!

I love Gumtree.

I can remember when we had a couch and a chair and a lamp to throw away and we'd booked a hard waste pickup for it.  But rather than leave it on the kerb (like a normal person) in a pile, PPH decided to create a carefully arranged lounge room on our nature strip.  It looked comfortable enough to live in.

we have one free kerb side a year so all the scrap metal lot come out and it doesn't take long and most is gone so the council doesn't have much to pich up and it's over $20 for a trailor at the dump, they weigh you going in and then out then charge like wounded bulls

Best hard rubbish story I've ever heard was a friend of mine in Adelaide... she saw a huge flat screen TV box that she figured she could use for some craftyness or other.. stopped and looked at it, and found it had a telly in it!

So she knocked on the door to ask if it was a mistake, and the guy said no, he'd bought some bigger tellies. She could have it if she wanted, and he also had a second identical one. Since she didn't have a big enough car, he put them both aside till she came back with her brother, and by then he'd found the remotes, cables and manuals. One each.. very happy campers all round! :)

Oh, and BTW, the owner is the only one who can legally remove items from the nature strip without copping a fine, so it pays to ask. This has become big business for both councils and contractors, and they hate losing out.
