I have had my eye on that ancient coin the Athenial Owl tetradrachm for many years now
I like this one
Attica, Athens. After 449 BC. AR Tetradrachm (16.85 g). Helmeted head of Athena right / ΑΘΕ, owl standing right; olive-sprig and crescent above.

I've wanted an owl tet for years too. That euro coin is probably the only way I'll ever own one.
ditto
when ever I get the chance I hold one that is in on display in a dealer's exie coins cabinet

Just punch the centre out of the Euro coin and rough it up a bit.
No one will ever notice. :)
I got a hankering for an owl tet after seeing this one posted on CCF by DVCollector. It's a real beauty.

That's a nice one. I know they made them in two main periods. The earlier ones are struck from a lot more nicely engraved dies while the later ones are cruder. Of course the early nice ones are 3 x the price of the older ones. They are also hard to find without test cuts and with the designs on both sides well-centered.
Vcoins is my site of choice for stalking coins like this. There's some really nice ones there I can't afford. Like this one:

And here's a newer style one, that's still pretty and a quarter of the price.

At the time of DVCollectors CCF post, I joined another forum somewhere, related to ancients, but I was like a duck out of water so only visited twice and have since deleted all reference to it.

That sounds something like it. I don't think I ever posted on it as I have no ancient coins, just have a hankering for one in particular. I love 'bird' coins and I especially love owl coins.
Added a new country to the OFEC count this week.

Nice coins, Trout.
I've not seen either of those before. :)
Pretty birdies. I have the Chile coin in 5, 10 and 20 Centavos, but the Japan one is still on my want list along with several other lovely Birdie coins from Japan.

I tried and tried and thought I did good but then get a message that someone left their book at the PO so I really don't know what else to do except to come over and staple it to you :laugh2:

Wow trout! Thank you so much! :yahoo: I wasn't angling for you to give it to me, but hey, it'll be a most welcome addition to my Birdie Collection. I'm in the middle of a huge project with my world coins and my themed collections.
I'm trying to get them all in their correct albums instead of having them in all sorts of containers dotted around the place, and I'm putting the KM# on each holder and will do up a spreadsheet of the lot once I'm done.
I've got all my 'loose' world coins sorted and labelled, just have to do all the ones that are already in albums (hundreds & hundreds of them). The aim is to be able to tell in a matter of seconds if I have a particular coin or not. The only collection that's pretty well up to date is the Tiny Coins one.
