have a read of this stuff Kel
not instant relief but a start in the right direction

I used to work with this bloke and he did some absolutely brilliant work with my patients
http://www.dodgydigital.com/Frank_McDonald/Anxiety___Panic___Worry.html
there are a few PDF's on panic attacks anxiety etc

if you open up Panic Attacks there is a whole worksheet on breathing etc

valium and anti-depressants do work but they don't get to the cause

Rather go off half cocked as I quite often do, may I suggest that you get professional advise first.

It may be something that is not "panic attacks".

get to your GP and talk about it
sometimes, something to settle the symptoms in the first instance and then work on the cause

usual meds are the valium, Librium - fast acting but it only takes a few weeks for a type of physical dependence sets in
i.e. pill wears off - person gets anxiety but it Is actually a withdrawal symptoms form the medication

they are very debilitating Kel and talking about it can help to reduce the fear of attacks re-occurring
if you live somewhere where there are private or public social workers, psychologists then you can get some talking therapy happening
a mental health treatment plan gets you private psyche or social work for bulk billing rates
your community health centre will have either professionals
older folk can sometimes get into older persons mental health services and they provide the same with doctors who are specialised in older person's health & they do great work here where I am. you have to be careful with medications for older patients, so a specialist who can fully assess you and the the problem is worth seeing
xx I assure you that I do understand

very good advice Goldie
anxiety type symptoms can be caused by a multitude of conditions - physical and psychological, even medications can upset the apple cart
so yes, get checked out - when did you last have a check-up?

thanks bruce ,  I am already having treatment for my problems and that is 300 of efexor  per day 150 in the morning and 150 plus I carmer at night has been working ok but lately  seems not enough for my seritones levels in the brain . I was just wondering if any body else had the same trouble and using the same capsules as me .. last 3 or 4 times I have gone to the hospital , they just report me to the mental health department and they send a guy up to the hospital to interview me but by then , it is all over till next time .

sorry Kel
I go straight into assessment mode

sounds to me like you need a medication review by someone who knows and understands that medication
Effexor is said to be good but  like any medication - regular review is important

I might be a bit sus of your calming med and if you are getting annoying withdrawal symptoms as it wears off, when you take them longer term it can have that side effect

happy for PM Kel
I do work in the field,  so I have some knowledge about it,  not an expert mind you
Title: RE: panic attacks

my main problem with breathing is I have C.O.A.D.  and that is a lot of my problem , I worry a lot about every thing going wrong in my life and when I think of something going wrong then I panic .

I then hope and pray for a massive heart attack to take me straight away .but it just wont happen , and as I say I only live for my family
after 30 years of driving buses in Brisbane , i  just feel my life has been worthless .
Title: RE: panic attacks

oi!!!!
I have a 1964 bus routes book that I bought off ebay
routes goes through Holland park and all around the place
you guys did a great job!!
how on earth did kids like me get from one side of brizzy to the other without you guys??
the trains didn't go to all suburbs as you'd know

sounds like you have depression and the COAD is probably the cause

have read through frank's pdf's on anxiety and relaxation - you might pick up some tips
the old black dog can make life a misery and chronic illness does as well
after all of my years working in health I don't believe that any person's life has been worthless (except for the criminal types - that is different)

you probably have a million great stories about your life on the buses
you have a great family and a wife who loves you to bits
but when you're feeling miserable you just can't feel or see the sunshine
no matter how many people tell you that the sun IS shining bright today

looks like the old ticker is working well and I am pleased that it hasn't let you down to date
I have a few inklings about your condition but one step at a time

when was the last time you had a relaxing massage?
when was the last time you let you body relax?
muscle relaxation is your best weapon because as the tension bundles up then the adrenalin stores itself up - just waiting for you set it free during a panic attack
then you let it all out, get exhausted, relax and

then it starts all over again and so on

without realising it a sort of cycle develops

and you can get help to re-wire that conditioning and reduce some of the problems that these vicious cycles can create

why not? much more fun to take some of your suffering out of daily life - life gets easier without this fear I assure you

Quote from: 'keldaw' pid='34395' dateline='1384427795'i  just feel my life has been worthless .

Mate, there's no such thing as a worthless life! Well, except for crims, as RG says... and you're not one of those scum, are you?

And anyway, worth is a relative concept. Would you say a rich man, a politician, a king or a celebrity has a worthwhile life? Worthwhile to whom, exactly? You? Me? The world at large? Surely any life only needs to be worthwhile to the person living it?

Every day is a gift you know. And isn't the best part of any gift giving or receiving it? How lucky are we to wake up each day, and get the chance to bask in the sun, walk in the rain, gaze at our coins, chat with friends, or any of the myriad things that we may enjoy? Sure there are bad times. We all have them, but why would you ever let them overwhelm you and crowd out the joy of living?

All the chemistry in the world, helpful as it may be short term, doesn't hold a candle to a positive attitude. And attitudes can be adjusted in many ways. Even something as simple as a walk in the park really can make a difference.

That was really well put Fulvio.

Kel, I can't begin to imagine what panic attacks are like combined with C.O.A.D.

That must scare the daylights out of you.

I think RG and Goldie have given good advice here.

I suffer from severe anxiety with panic and depression. I'm pretty heavily medicated (3 different daily medications + valium when I need it), but I still get panic attacks, usually from proximity to others, (even my own kids .... which is bad), or when more than one thing occupies my mind, or when something is not going to plan. To go out in public usually requires me to take a valium, which as RG has indicated is highly addictive. Hence I don't get out much, so as to avoid a dependence forming and so they'll work when I need them.

When I get panic attacks at home I'll leave the room straight away and go lay down and try to relax as much as possible. If I'm out, I head for the car and sit down and try to relax until it settles.

Try to pinpoint what triggers the attack, or try to pick up any early warning signs before it happens. Hopefully that way you might be able to avoid it happening, or get it settled before it turns into a full blown attack.

I really hope things improve for you soon.

wow UNi
thanks for sharing that

suggestion: the next time you lie down when having a panic attack
Lie down on your front on say an exercise mat on the floor
when you are face down you can't not do diaphragmatic breathing
and that is the breathing technique that you need to be doing to get the blood sats corrected

you can even practice that technique before hand

thanks,
I don't know much about computers at all but there is other stuff that I do know about having worked in the field for over 20 years & have also started doing a masters in mental health so I have been refreshing the old CBT theories and learning new ones. costs a bomb but I am loving it

anyways, have a try and see if it works for you

another one;

you can also lie down on the floor on your back
put your hands gently across the chest just on the base of the sternum - have the longest fingertips touching
take a deep breath - breath in & out very slowly and as deeply as is comfortable

make the fingers gently pull away from each other

if they don't move apart then you aren't drawing the breath down far enough and are probably breathing in a shallow breathing technique - which keeps anxiety happening - this exercise helps to retrain the old lungs

plus it gives you something to focus on instead of freakin out about freakin out

Hi again everyone,

Really heartfelt stuff going on here.  Do you think we should pass on all these threads to "Beyond Blue"?  I'm really serious.  This is all good stuff, with respect to all the participants who have been very brave in sharing some really horrific experiences.  Imagine how many other forums out there that have untold numbers of members who have no release for their fears or worse - have no one to talk to. I for one feel a real weight off my shoulders for what I have said about my own situation - and I use my own name!  Even so it is very obvious that while you have user names you pretty much all know each other - even more so in recent months.  Good on you Ausjack for sticking you head up. It was a gutsy risk but I think you hit a real cord and the bond between all members has tighted a hundred fold...just hope you all remember this when the new book comes out. Happy to cop any suggestions, or positive criticisms....but be gentle!

Regards as always

Greg

Thanks Uni, appreciate it mate :)
I haven't been on the computer long really, only about 5 coming up 6 years and I've been teaching my self along with help from some fantastic members :good: as I can't sit for extended periods and due to the old scone I'm a bit slow..only getting things to sink in other wise I've still got a bit of grey left, but anyway I have been on a few forums now and found most well nearly every bloody one very umm self centred and absorbed but we are making this one of the best sites I have ever seen and the amount of love here just blows my mind, so there's 4 main people that I want to thank, AC and trout, with out this pair I wouldn't be here as they put me on to it but it did take them a little to get me to come around but I am so glad I did now and two others are Belly and Kel, these two bloke are so friendly and I love you all just so very much as some here know when your in that hole, the walls seem so high you can never get a grip to get out so sometimes we need a helping hand. Greg if you'd like to do something like that than you have my full blessing as you never know as it might just help someone else that feel the same way.

For those of you that didn't see trout's thread "show us ya mug", (not for week stomach) as there's a pic in here of me after they played humpty dumpty with me :) http://www.australian-coins.net/showthread.php?tid=406  and for those that are interested and wonder why I go off well here's a little for you to think about and why it could end up so hard for your kids and grand kids with all our history including medical are all over the net and as I was a test case for work cover and like most things it's a very long and depressing story and as we are sharing I'll share a little more about me, my name is Jayson O'Cass so just look for my name and if you google me I come up so any future employer can see my history so there's no point in even trying to lie and if you do get caught they can sack you straight away :( I hope this link works http://www.wcc.nsw.gov.au/Decisions/Decisions/10518-04%20O'Cass.pdf so with all that has happened to me I can see why I get a little down from time to time but if we can help anyone if anyway I'm all for it :good:

I know a lot of you think I'm a nut case but that's ok, over time you will all find out about me as I really couldn't care any more and happy to share some of my downs and what I can do sometimes to get out of it :)

Top forum top people just really really love it..and some special members just a little more :winkextra:

Anyway that's enough for today so be happy and good to your selves..more to come :)

Oh and why I didn't use my real name was that they say not to so my first user name was cyberjack8 (still my ebay) as I couldn't think of anything so as I'm Jack and I was in cyber space and I started in 08 that's how that come about but then I thought some people might trip out and think I'm a cyber jacker :laugh2: so then I thought well I've been know as aussie as well so ausjack was born but I don't care as most here know my name and as it's a locked sort of forum makes it easier as I really don't think I would have gone this far and opened up so much on CCF, but then ya never know :winkextra:

Quote from: 'ausjack' pid='34544' dateline='1384548146'I can see why I get a little down from time to time

How could you not? I think we all understand, mate. Some more than others perhaps.

While that decision was certainly fair, the underlying assumptions most certainly are not. Its all fine and wonderful to say "you could do this", but if noone will give you the opportunity, well, no, you can't do this. Been there, done that...

Back in the early 80's, I was alone in the computer room while we were printing pension cheques. As luck would have it, all three printers stopped simultaneously, and I had to get things rolling again. So I threw boxes of cheques into the first two, then 3-part paper into the third. And yeah, I wasn't too careful about the old "don't be a crane" thing. So I ended up on the floor, unable to move, and that's how they found me.

That was the start of eight years of just about every form of torture known to man. I did various jobs, ranging from inspirational to soul-destroying. I had time in and out of work, hospitals and bed. I set records of 9 months at work, and 2 hours (that was when I collapsed and took a whole trolley of tapes for a waltz across the room). And I got depressed. And ate.

So one fine day, after over thirty doctors and countless examinations, procedures and reports, they sent me to a new guy. I walked in, and before I even sat down he said "jeez you're fat". Never even examined me, and said in his report that if there was an injury, it was due to weight and not at all work-related. Never mind the weight gain was recent. Never mind CAT scans and reports by every other doctor.

So that was the end of that. Oh and by the way, your job no longer exists, since its been relocated to Canberra, so you can go drive a desk somewhere instead. Except the razor gang says we need to shed a bazillion staff, so you're one of them. Congratulations. Seeya later alligator.

To be fair, HR bent over backwards to help me. They pulled every trick out of the book, which meant I walked away with at least double what I otherwise would have, but the bottom line was the dole queue.

And you already knows how THAT goes. You tell them you have a problem, they won't hire you. You don't tell them, they find out, you're toast. So it wasn't a real happy story from there on. And of course the injury is still there, and still lays me out now and then. So reliability is not a strong suit.

The only real answer in this situation is self-employment. That way at least you know the boss understands. But thanks to Paul Keating and his "recession we had to have" and 19% interest rates, that took 7 years of my life and a million dollars.. and ruined my relationships with family and others to boot. Not particularly uplifting, and wierd things start to happen. You wake up a thousand miles from home one day with no recollection of the previous week. You yell at people a lot. You don't get out of bed for 6 months. And so on and so on.

Until one day, you get hauled in to Centrelink for yet another review, but this time happen to strike a sympathetic young lady. A half hour appointment stretches out to three, emotions flow and tissue boxes deplete. She makes it her personal quest to make things right. Charging off astride her steely desk, slaying paper monsters with flaming pens, decades of misery suddenly abate with the arrival of a thin blue card in the mail.

Life is not perfect. Far from it. The pain is still there. As is the angst and frustration. But the bad years provided valuable lessons now put to good use. How to live on nothing for one. How to view each morning as an accomplishment. How to appreciate time and friends and sun and wind... mosquitos not so much. ;)

And y'know what? In the end it doesn't really matter anyway. No silver spoon or mountain of money, no amount of fame, luxury or indulgence is going to save anyone from the ultimate fate we all face. So why worry? Good, bad or indifferent, each day is just another step closer to the cliff, so we may as well make the best of it while the trip lasts, eh?

Once that realisation sinks in, life truly becomes a remarkable gift.

yeah it's finally kicking in, thank you :) Mate I hear you so loud and clear, near mirror actually :( Less being McDuck that is :winkextra: :mocking: I'd post some emails that I got from my personal file from the council all legal and asked if I could copy and told yes and they were from upper management saying to get rid of me ASAP and I show, can't remember if it was 4 or 5 legal eagles and they all said "where did you get that" and then an abrupt "don't want to know anything about it". No legal battle mate as I'm told there's nothing I can do but I don't know how much trouble I'd get into for releasing it as governments don't like their dirty deeds let out and I recorded my conversations with one legal eagle after getting screwed by the first one..went to legal omb and told they don't lie but I had the proof on paper but they still don't lie and no one cared as the rich like Dr and legal are protected, eg QLD patel, total joke, white collar crime do no time..or very little :(

Not always Nevol. Because a lot of ppl just turn a blind eye, even when they know what that other person has done, but as long as it wasn't done to them, it's all OK.

I often think the best ppl are the ppl with Depression, because we care and this is where it got us.

One day I am going ask my Doc why are there soooo many ppl on the planet with Depression.

I have so-called "friends" who believe if you didn't have a bad life, as in horrible parents, getting raped or bashed and beaten when a child, you have no reason to have Depression.  So just get a life and some just need a kick up the backside. I know, they a nice ppl, aren't they.

Not sure I'd totally agree with that statement, at least as far as our coin community goes. Remember there are always at least three sides to any story.. one for each person, and the truth. Sometimes multiple truths.

You may remember previous forums had more than their fair share of conflicts. Well, I ended up sort of in the middle of a couple of them.. not involved, but close to the protagonists. While I didn't pick sides, I can state categorically that in each case both sides were utterly convinced of their own honesty and righteousness, and that the other side was totally to blame, complete scum, thieves, etc. From where I sat, it just looked like misunderstandings that escalated, and nobody was prepared to back down.

Which is not to say that the world isn't full of scumbags. It most certainly is. But they always get found out eventually.

I have no idea what happened to AJ, or who was involved, so I can't comment on the situation. But I do think that the story will come out, and the offender will be dealt with accordingly.

Just hope it wasn't me...

Nothing ever happens to MY computers, cos I choose quality over cheap-and-nastiness. As for all the people I know with PC's, well... they deserve all their self-inflicted traumas I reckon. ;)

Actually, that is a very very sad story...

Back in the day when every idiot journalist in the world was bleating about how "beleaguered Apple" was as good as dead (with four billion dollars in cash in hand, mind you), there was a move afoot to show support by buying parcels of shares.

Being in Oz, there was all sorts of horrible IRS paperwork, which I had in hand, filled in and ready to go to a broker in LA, along with three grand.

At $12 a share.

Then our very stupid government, against all advice, decided to flog off Telstra. And since it was a MUCH much simpler process, I tossed the three grand at them instead.

Multiple stock splits later, and with my Telstra shares worth about half what I paid for them, that little parcel was worth about $1.5 million.

:cray:

OK, so the stock price has since halved, what with Steve being worm food, a bucketload of stupid product decisions by the new managment and all.. but still, it would have been a much much better move had I gone through with it. And MUCH better than Tel$tra. :(

:( yeah there's been a lot of people over the years that have said 'if only' gee I've done it heaps my self but then sit back and go such is life and it must have happened for a reason, well one would hope and that it's not just a random act from the universe :winkextra: I have to tell my self that or I'd think I did something to deserve what's happened to me, yeah I'm bad but not that bad..not as bad as 'Bad Boy Belly' though, now there's trouble with a capital T if ever I seen it and I've seen a little :laugh2: Ya know I love ya, Big B :winkextra:

Hi Fulvio,
That sounded like something which would be a real downer, so it thought it was worth checking out.

I did a little looking and what I found does not seem to match what you are saying.

What I found made it look like you had not done nearly so badly as you thought - which is good!

I had put a whole lot of links, but thought I would just ask for how you worked it out instead, as I might have missed something.

Yes, the situation today is nowhere near as bad as it was. Telstra are back in the black, and Apple has come off the boil considerably.

But after sixteen years Telstra is now nearly double the issue price. Apple is up 6,700%, counting splits. That is still one heck of a difference.

To put it in coin terms, its like being offered the choice of a 1930 or 1931 penny way back when, and choosing the 1931. :( They're both worth more than a penny, but oh what a difference....

I did wonder what you were on about fulvio.  I bought some telstra shares for $3 something about 4 years ago and would have doubled my money now.  Still wondering whether or not to sell.

Telstra spent a very long time a looong way under water, thanks to some less than brilliant management. Yes, they've finally recovered, though not to anything near the highs of long ago. I think if you bought cheap, they're probably worth holding onto, on the basis that there's a very good chance this idiotic FTTN idea of Abbott's will make tens of billions for them, which should flow through to the share price. However there are many better companies to invest in, and I wouldn't be buying Telstra at today's prices. And I certainly feel sorry for people who bought in with T2, and are still a couple of dollars in the red.

this is why I need a break from time to time as it's like a niceness OD and I'm not use to it, actually use to being treated the opposite but I feel it's changing me to be nicer so it'a all good :friends:

:laugh2: is that the same management that cost us a bloody mint to get rid of someone and now has been put back to do it all again as he's so good at his job, how much will it cost to get rid of him this time :( go ziggy, oop's did I say that out loud :winkextra:
