I haven't collected these for years, but have only accumulated about 6 of this date. According to Renniks there were 8.25 m minted, but compared to all other dates, reasonably hard to get. I know this is probably old news, but have many of you been able to collect decent quantities.

Havent got any from circulation but I have 7 unc examples from the
red wallets but I am currently saving all of the 5 cent coins that I get in change as
they will probably go out of circulation in the next few years and maybe my
kids will benefit from them down the track.Would have about 5 kg so far
I have found several hundred but that is from many many many coins
I have not looked much because my 1972 is UNC and I collect UNC only.
Still looking for 2009 and 2011 5 cent in UNC condition.
I haven't spotted a 72 5c in circulation for 6 years
I rarely spot any 60's and 70's coinage now, but 8 million is a big mintage, with that in mind might as well get the lower mintage NZ coinage.
I keep all 5¢ (and 10¢) from change and put them in a container. When a container is full (about 2.2kg) I sort them out, looking for varieties, scarce years, errors and extra good ones to keep. All the rest are taken back to the bank and cashed in.
I get one or two 1972 5¢ each time. That's about one 1972 per 500 coins. Very rarely do I strike one in good condition -at 40 years old they are usually well worn and marked.

I've found maybe half a dozen while noodling. The mintage may be 8 million but compared to all the 5c minted from 1966 - 2013 it is a small number so they are hard to find.
Also the 5c is a small, low value coin. I would imagine that only a fraction of the original mintage has survived to the present day.
I haven't seen the prices lately but circulated examples of 1972 5c used to sell for around $7 each on eBay.
1972 5c are scarce in any condition
Eric has a nice 1972 5c coin (http://www.drakesterling.com/coins-for-sale/products/1972-five-cent) for sale right now if you want a great one.
I can't see why thjis particular coin is rated so highly. What is an UNC one worth?

Wow, $525 for a 5c piece. I think I'll stick to the mint sets.
But even $7 for a circulated 1972 5c. That still represents 140x face value. That makes it second only to the $1 mule.

I am not lining up to buy it :) Those sorts of prices are only for those who are deep of pocket or want a few coins of the very best quality. If I did have the money to spend on that coin or a mangy 1930 penny for $10k I'd take the 5c every time. Quality will always be quality.

According to Maccas an UNC is $35
The reason that this coin is so highly rated is that up until 2009 over 4 billion 5c have been minted. That makes the 1972 mintage of 8 million comparatively small. Also only a fraction of the 8 million mintage would have survived 40 years.

I guess that is where peoples collecting styles differ. There is no right or wrong but my own preference would be the mangy 1930 penny. I can get a presentable 1972 5c for $30 or so. Whereas the only cheap 1930 penny you can get is from China :whistle2:

True story. And I would have both... but only if I had very deep pockets of course.
However Mark's right, which is why I'm salting away any and all sacks of UNC coins I come across, even without knowing how rare or otherwise they might become. Imagine having a $100 sack
(or were they boxes back then?) of those 1972's, and even just one of them being MS68. And before anyone says that's not going to happen again, I have two words... 2012 $1. :dodgy:

Unusual preservation technique McDuck!
Should stop the silverfish from eating them I suppose ....... :laugh2:
2012 MORs Fulvio?
That MS68 must be a bloody nice coin though. I'd have it and sit on it and love it dearly.

I stand to be corrected here as I am no expert on slabbed coins but it seems to me that it is easier to get high grades in the smaller coins.
I have seen a few MS68 5c from the 1970s, I've even seen an MS69 5c from the 2000s.
With 20c and 50c from the 1970s however the highest I have seen is MS67.

Yeah.. nobody's seen
ANY. Imagine walking into a bank and finding a sack now though. :yahoo:
Point is we just don't know until the reports come out a year or two later. So the only reliable way is to snag everything and wait them out.
Oh, and are your silverfish on steroids or something? Mine don't have much of a taste for metals... :dodgy:
:laugh2: .... well I thought if you were going to use salt ...... then I'd have to use silverfish (silver fish, swim, money bins, oh well) .... I suppose they'd make a mess of cardboard mint set and PNC packaging ....
Yes, the 2012 MOR, if you don't have any I don't think anyone has.
I'm guessing Mint Set Only.
Quote from: 'Unicorn' pid='33836' dateline='1384054777'I'm guessing Mint Set Only.
Yup, that's what I reckon. And I'm cheesed off that since I stopped buying sets years ago, I naturally don't have any. Oh well...
Just on the 2012 MOR....
I have not seen any either (Sydney).
Looks like mint sets only for the 2012 MOR, been a while as the last time would have been the 91 set for the MOR
So any ideas on the worth of ms66 if the 68 is over $500 :scratch_one-s_head:
I have one (and only I think) nice 1972 five cents but I don't know if it's a MS68

Very nice Rob.
ta purple one
it isn't a MS68 as I imagine that coin has to be this side of perfect or FDC for a 68 grade
but it is a very nice unc - choice unc me thinks

What's going on with the rim around 3 o'clock on the reverse?
yeah - I noticed that too :cray:
hey Mark
it's weird
I just looked at it with my x 10 magnifier (well - it is the son's geological x 10 magnifier but that is another story)
anyways, it looks like a rim pattern - now that is weird
I'll take another shot of it

I think it looks interesting. Like some of the rim is missing and there's some of the original marks on the blank planchet still there.
very nice, love ya nude shot RG :heat: a few little marks don't worry me when it's :drooling:
Top pic as well :good:
Ok looking 72 5c the best image I've seen

:agreed: A few stretch marks are only to be expected in nude shots of such venerable yet gorgeous creatures, no? As Mark says, they just add a little extra interest.
