Title: Sunday Challenge (3 November 2013) - Write One Article for the Wiki
Post by: markn on November 03, 2013, 08:32:17 AM
Here's a challenge for the members here.  Write me one article that I can post up on our new Wiki.  I don't care what it's about.  Just make sure you don't copy it from somewhere else.

It need only be a minimum of a few sentences about a particular coin. Hey even pick a date out of a hat and write about the 1988 5c, it doesn't matter what!

It could be just a coin from a particular year or a variety that you have interest. If people write about what interests them it should come very easily. Otherwise pick a thread here and go through it plucking the real information from the banter and off-topic. Turn it into a couple of sentences and there you have it, a forum wiki entry!

Look here's an easy one, I've even provided a picture:

10 Cent Wiki Entry (http://wiki.australian-coins.net/wiki/australian-coins/decimal-coins/10-cent-coins/)

And if you're wondering what to put, well I wrote a quick 5c entry that you can see here (http://wiki.australian-coins.net/wiki/australian-coins/decimal-coins/5-cent-coins/) but don't feel like you have to replicate that.  This is OUR wiki and we should put what interests us in it.

I only have 2 more years to go to complete the dollar coin post in the public forum so I should be able to complete that tomorrow (it takes a couple of hours to do each year).
after that I will give "Wiki" a crack :ok:

In 1981 Australian decimal coins were minted on
3 different continents & in 4 different cities.

Royal Australian Mint (RAM). Canberra
Royal Mint (RM). Perth
Royal Canadian Mint (RCM). Canada
Royal Mint (RMLL). Llantrisant

1 Cent coins were minted  in Canberra & Wales.
2 Cent coins were minted  in Canberra, Perth & Wales.
5 Cent coins were minted  in Canberra, Wales & Canada.
10 Cent coins were minted in Canberra & Wales.
20 Cent coins were minted in Canberra, Wales & Canada.
50 Cent coins were minted in Canberra & Wales.

Apart from 1966, more coins collectively, were minted in 1981 then any other year.

I was just down at our local coin show and my coin dealer started the 'story' of the history of the minting of the 1927 parliament house florin
so I quickly whipped out my note book and took notes to write a short forum wikkie background article that explains the poor strikes

I'm fiddling as an editor on the Wiki right now. I haven't a clue what I'm doing. Better leave it in draft until Mark gets back, shouldn't I?

(Cool claw cud pics Nancy -I've put up an entry but not game to make it live yet!)

The first 3 images in the top row are very similar and I did have a little trouble putting them in order, but I think the rest are pretty right.  Perhaps I should have just left 2 of those 3 out and only used 6 images all up.

Nancy I put them up like they are then thought the cud progression was top to bottom in the 2 pics not left to right and maybe should have just merged both pics into one large one so people could see at one glance. Get me?

Progression is L - R, sorry I should have pointed that out.  I have at least 8 different 2009 coins that have these claw cuds , possibly even more as it's been a fair while since I found them.

That's what I did, and the file size decreased by 75%. I suspect the originals had no compression.

I think it is just easier to look at them and, if you have ever seen one of each side by side, you will tell instantly.
I can see how that works and it is not a "tilted" digit like some 1970 50¢.

For PPH and Markn:   Can you include the pictures that Tiggersmith has put up with my letter of explanation or can't it be done?

I tried to do as Tiggersmith has done and I failed miserably.

Thanks TS, great help to explain my input.

My pleasure. It took a while, as I didn't have a program to use, so I had to load up Publisher 2010. Been meaning to do that anyway.

I agree, it is easy to tell the difference if you have seen both, but if not it could be difficult.

Thank you I have taken the information here and posted it into the wide and narrow date 1994 50c wiki (http://wiki.australian-coins.net/wiki/australian-coins/decimal-coins/fifty-cent-coins/fifty-cent-errors-varieties/1994-year-family-wide-narrow-date-varieties/).  Anyone have any idea of the relative mintages of each variety?  Is the wide date more common in the PNC or circulation?

No problems, Goldie. I just hadn't seen that name before.
You would be surprised how many different versions I have seen.
Might have to change my handle to "BOB" or something similar LOL.

That would be me.
I thought once the pic was uploaded, I could get rid of my copy.
How permanent is the Wiki going to be, if it relies on members pics?
Members will come and go, so maybe the pics need to be stored elsewhere.

I agree.  From this point forward I'll only upload pictures to the wiki rather than hot-linking them from users albums.

By all means write something, write anything and email it to mark@thepurplepenny.com and we'll add it.

Use what you know, what you are interested in or just pick a thread and write a summary of it. Need only be a paragraph or 2 or 3 long.

Once we've got our head around how it works (I still haven't) we'll add logins for those who'd like to manage it and add content. It's still in it's infancy.
