Title: let's share and celebrate OUR wonderful AUSTRALIA
Post by: ausjack on November 01, 2013, 01:39:40 PM
when I went down the street earlier they were playing this on the radio and I'd forgotten all about it..I've always like it so I thought it might be nice to share things, anything! as I'll put some pic's up later of places I've been and things I've seen..I don't see why everything has to be around coins even though it's a coin forum. I could be wrong be I think it adds a friendly feel :friends:

I really should take the camera out instead of the rifle for birds.
We have some stunning birds here especially during summer when I run the sprinkler But as soon as I hear a bloody crow I grab the gun, I hate the buggers they attack everything, NASTY sods.
The Missus is getting a bit "Peeved" with the holes in the flyscreens but if you don't shoot the buggers from inside they see the rifle and fly away, Sneaky buggers :dodgy:

Lots of places have spectacular scenery. And a lot of them are interchangeable. Yet people rave about NZ. I don't know anyone who came back saying they didn't fall in love with the place, and they all seem to go back. One day I'll go see what the fuss is about, but in the meantime I dutifully gawk at their piccies. ;)

I think its a bit like Tassie... there's really nothing there that you haven't seen before on the mainland. But whereas you get hundreds of miles of mountain, cane, wheat, desert or whatever up here, in Tassie its all sliced and diced and edited down to a bite size package. Around every bend there's something new, so in an hour you can get a Readers Digest version of the great aussie landscape that would take you days to see anywhere else in the country.

And from all reports and pics, NZ seems to be like that too. Maybe that's the attraction?

Quotepeople rave about NZ.
Well worth a visit but, schedule a goodly amount of time. You will regret if you only plan a short trip.

We spent our honeymoon there and the earth moved for us -literally. An earthquake shook us out of bed amidst falling furniture and china!

yeah we had a tremor when we were there at Christchurch it was only 2.0 so it was pretty hard to feel we were at the airport at the time and one of the people there said they get those all the time.

Because scenery doesn't put food in ya belly. Some of the most beautiful places on the planet are real hellholes to try and live in. Makes them pretty good for a visit (unless you drown, burn, freeze, get shot, sick, robbed, crushed or whatever), but you really wouldn't want to live there.

Australia's so good because its not only a pretty attractive place, but also extremely stable... geologically, economically and politically. Why do you think all the refugees want to come here?
Title: RE: let's share and celebrate OUR wonderful AUSTRALIA
Post by: ausjack on November 02, 2013, 03:56:08 PM
I would have left the extremely stable politically out as that is very subjective and debatable and a lot of refugees have been coming from before my time after nam but all of a sudden we don't want the people that we helped make their countries hell holes but that's another story, we'll stick with Oz :winkextra: so ya got any pic's :)

Looking out my back door last night.
Unfortunately, by the time I noticed the sunset with the orb of the (red, red) sun perfectly framed, it was too late to fiddle with camera setting. Just a very quick "point and click" before it was disappearing. Must keep an eye out again tonight.

And some music to go with it. Lookin' Out My Back Door (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wd_nE625vGk)

Here's an interesting story ....

River Murray at Waikerie,South Australia.  Pic.1 is the site of the original pumping station for the town.

Pic.2 is the pump used from the 1920's through to the 1950's to supply both the town and surrounding orchards. Was capable of extracting 500,000 gallons per hour from the River Murray.

Pic. 3 shows the cliffs across from the town and highlights how the river cuts its way through the countryside.

That is an awesome pump.  But if you want a true earth-moving experience then go to Cobdogla (the South Australian riverland) and take a look at the world's only operational Humphrey Pump on one of the days when they fire it up.  Simply amazing.

Here's a page on how it works: http://www.angelfire.com/ak5/energy21/humphreypump.htm

Wow, I've never heard of one. Thanks for the link Mark. It might take me a few more reads to get my head around it though. There were some really smart people for their times. Humphrey appears to be one of them. Not sure how the residue from combustion would impact water quality, but might be minimal due to the volumes involved.

I had heard of the Humphrey pump but never seen details of operation. It is not mentioned in several of the textbooks I have about pumps and pumping.
Worth googling "Humphrey pump" if you are intrigued. Also try "fluidyne".

Greenpeace and FAO are trying to resurrect this idea for small pumps in impoverished areas of India.

Thanks Mark for the link.
