This should be serious enough

This is how I misbehaved.

I really needed to save up to pay for the airconditioning.

But

I cannot help myself putting in bids at Heritage on coins I still need for my set at well below catalogue value.

99% of the time I miss out.

Occasionally though:

Lovely coin Emu.

NO this is the place we can just randomly change the direction of the thread/discussion at will :yahoo:
IF we are allowed to get away with it and keep our decorum, This could be a fun thread :ok:

All I am saying IF we want get :off_topic: simply post Ill see you in the Misbehavers thread instead of changing streams in the other threads
That way all the other threads stay on topic and this one can be totally random without EVER going :off_topic: :)

I was able to get a couple of the Carson City dollars in the late 80s before the prices went through the roof.  At one time the 82, 83, and 84 were common and fairly cheap.  You could get them anywhere.  I managed to get a 1885-CC in the first PCGS holder graded MS63 before the door closed.  By the time I could afford the 1889, prices had gone up too much.  A little earlier and I could have had it.

Don't let it bother you Mate.
Some people are just as passionate about slabbed coins as you are, It is just that they have a totally different viewpoint on the subject :ok:
We ALL collect differently and for different reasons and that is a GOOD thing.:yahoo:

I have been reading and looking at the pic's in your Dollar and 20 cent slabbed coins they do look stunning :good:
I also NOW fully understand the amount of Time, effort and expense that went into what you have done.
You have managed to do the impossible and have spurred me into getting my Gold and Proclamation coins slabbed because they will look outstanding in an album with the slab pages :yahoo:
Due mainly to your posts and images I have gone from a slab "Hater" to a slab "Appreciator" , That my friend his quite an achievement .

I will be putting my Proclamation coins and my Sovereigns  and half Sovereigns in the same album (hopefully I will need other albums) in PCGS slabs.
They will not only look awesome but at the end of my days the Missus , kids or grandies WILL get true value out of my collection.
It will take time , effort and a few quids but at the end of the day I recon it is worthwhile :good:

Another totally random post. I read an article in the SMH about the z8_GND_5296 Galaxy. Apparently it's light has only taken 13.1 Billion Years to get here, which I guess makes it around 123,935,569,190,808,000,000,000 kms away. Go Hubble Bubble!!!

From the Wiki page (you just knew there had to be one, right?):

z8_GND_5296, discovered in 2013, was announced as the most distant galaxy ever found. It is "just 700 million years after the Big Bang, when the universe was only about 5 percent of its current age of 13.8 billion years". The galaxy is at a redshift of 7.51, and it is neighbour to what was announced then as second most distant galaxy with a redshift of 7.2. The galaxy produces stars at a phenomenal rate, equivalent in mass to about 300 suns per year. Because of the expansion of the universe, the galaxy is about 30 billion light-years away from Earth.

Quote from: 'Fulvio' pid='32252' dateline='1382699356'From the Wiki page (you just knew there had to be one, right?):

z8_GND_5296, discovered in 2013, was announced as the most distant galaxy ever found.

Yeah, I think the 30 billion is a typo (30 does sound like 13 when spoken). If it's 13.8b years old (-700m big bang), then light must travel a hell of a lot faster out there somewhere.
The wiki on distant objects seems to have it correct.

Can anyone remember the Scrooge McDuck comic (maybe late 60's early 70's) where Scrooge wanted to have the rarest coin? (From memory a dime). So he got every coin of that particular year and dropped all except one out of a plane into the ocean. As he walked down the street flipping his one of a kind, it fell and was run over by a steamroller. He, Donald along with Huey, Duey and Louie then had to dive in the ocean to get one. In doing that, they discovered Atlantis and the inhabitants that had learnt how to breath under water. Kinda sticks in my head that one.

Quote from: 'Fulvio' pid='33328' dateline='1383378256'How did a 12oz claw hammer lead to this?

Oh. The spurt of activity reminded me this was never answered...

As a very disturbed 19 year old, Mike Oldfield came up with a tune which eventually caught Richard Branson's attention. Branson had set up the first recording studio in the UK in a manor house using borrowed funds, and invited Oldfield to live there and work on it in his spare time. Oldfield gave him a long list of instruments he wanted, and one day spotted the movers removing a set of bells belonging to the previous resident muso and laid claim to them.

This instrument would give its name to his album, but normally lived at the back of the orchestra and was played with a tiny leather and copper hammer. Oldfield wanted much more presence, and for the instrument to be the main focal point front and centre.

So the solution was to bash it with a 12oz claw hammer.

Thus was born Tubular Bells, which kicked off Virgin Music, and ultimately the global Virgin Group empire and the upcoming space tourism flights. Branson got a knighthood, and Oldfield regained his sanity.

From tiny acorns... :)

yeah I hear ya loud and clear Fulvio, if I find it it's like cool 'cause it's super cheap and if someone gives me anything I just can't sell as it was given for a reason, but I have given away what I have been given but I feel it's different giving something to someone because they're worthy but, no find it very hard to sell and work out fair prices and even where to sell :(

Information
------------------------------

200 Nips & Tucks And I Want More!
This startling film meets those whose pursuit of the ultimate body has taken over their lives.
In California, 58-year-old Monique has been going under the knife for 35 years. Following over 200 plastic surgery procedures at a cost in excess of $200,000, she is now one of the most surgically enhanced people in the world.
In Liverpool, 28-year-old Carolyn Anderson has been dubbed the Scouse Pammy. Her transformation from a brunette to a buxom blonde beach bomb began 14 years ago, when her dad commented that she looked like the 'Baywatch' star.
Gavin, aka Diablo Delenfer, 'The Devil Man', has horns, fangs and a split tongue. He has even had the whites of his eyes tattooed a permanent red, and still to come is the metal Mohawk...
Finally, meet Orit, a high-maintenance Israeli beauty who prides herself on looking like a doll and whose plastic surgeon is on call for her at all hours.

404 pages are simply "File Not Found" errors. The webserver can't give you the page because it doesn't exist, so instead it gives you whatever has been set up by the admin. Which may be as simple as ACF's, or quite fancy with all the bells and whistles and crystal chandeliers!

Try this:

The requested URL /oops was not found on this server.

Apache/2.2.14 (Ubuntu) Server at www.australian-coins.net Port 80

I got that same Morgan, a much better 404 than any other website.

I could be a ratbag and not refund if the coin returns if I wanted now.

200 Nips and Tucks And I Want More!

Health-Medical Documentary hosted by Meera Syal, published by Channel 5 in 2014 - English narration

http://img560.imageshack.us/img560/3075/laoj.jpg

Someone in retail told me once not to engage with crazy people when they came into a shop.  This mainly meant not meeting their eyes in conversation because if you looked them in the eyes they took this as confirmation that you were interested in what they were saying.  I'd suggest that you responding to shanew's threads is the internet equivalent of staring deeply and soulfully into a crazy person's eyes.

Why "Prune " this thread, After all I created it so that NO discussion was  OFF topic .
How on earth can anything posted in this particular thread be OFF topic when this is the place to answer off topic questions in the main threads and not bog them down .
I imagine that it was a administrate stuff up and not a deliberate "Snip"
After all it IS in the "Chin Wag" section and has nothing to do with serious numismatic debate/Discussion  or is anything taken seriously in this thread anyway.
To me it is simply a place to answer off topic questions in the main forum :ok:

Blame that silly youngster Troutski. He hasn't got the hang of decluttering the place, so he posts long winded attributions and says he's coming over here to reply. Which leaves a trail of duplicates of course.

I cannot find the Bullion thread so I will just post this in here as It is impossible to be "Off Topic" here :)

OK
Bullion, Grannybait Vs. Numismatic coins

Grannybait coins sometimes But rarely increase in value and Bullion coins value is driven by the paper markets, Numismatic coins DO tend to increase in value at a better rate that bullion coins.

Here is an example of 2 coins one is Grannybait Stirling silver .
Issue price $14 Bullion value $12.38 Market value about $15

The other can still be found in circulation.
Issue price 50 cents bullion value "Bugger all" Market value $25-$30

Not at all, I started this thread because many members were hijacking threads with off topic posts (Myself included).
As NOTHING on this thread can be viewed as "Off Topic" it is the perfect place to post when the need for an off topic statement arises.

Simply post "Answering this in the Missbehavers" in the other thread and Bingo , it can be carried on in this thread.
PERFECT, Keeps the Mods happy because they don't have to spend their time cleaning up threads and We can waffle on about anything without EVER going off topic.

Never give in to bullies.
Camelrooter lost all face when he dropped that legal action against secretsquirrel at the last minute. He would not be able to even attempt to sue anyone as he was about to be declared a vexatious litigant.
Also there are people are looking for him to hit him with all sorts of legal action for monies owed. There are also others who will even the score via much more physical means.
If you allow anyone who has any dealings with that lowlife to be accepted or remain a member of a forum, then please tell me because if that is the case I am out of here.

I think that's the key point here emu.  There's a bunch of people here who have no idea who he is, and a bunch more who have no desire to see the entire topic brought back from the dead.  Right now two people on this forum have brought the subject of his existence back up and one person is making fun of the nickname.  It's a non-issue and I'd appreciate it if everyone just stopped talking about it.

Also there are people are looking for him to hit him with all sorts of legal action for monies owed. There are also others who will even the score via much more physical means.
If you allow anyone who has any dealings with that lowlife to be accepted or remain a member of a forum, then please tell me because if that is the case I am out of here.

I understand this is a sore point for you but please understand it's a non-issue on THIS forum.  In fact I don't recall mention of this issue prior to a few days ago when Runway so helpfully brought the whole thing back up again.  The guy isn't here, and if there are people here associated with him they've kept their opinions to themselves and if they keep doing so, I've got no problem with them.

As to the bullying issue?  He's not here, there's no bullying and I am not giving in to anyone.  I understand that the whole thing upsets you but bringing the topic back up potentially puts me in a position where I might have to deal with him.  And I do not want to do that.  So please just let the whole thing drop.

This is my final word on the topic.  Any more posts about this bit of past history will be deleted without warning.

I do feel for the OP in the other thread but it is time for a dose of reality I think.

From my limited experience of "Bouncers" THEY are normally the No Neck dumb thugs NOT the Police.
Why on Earth anyone would allow their kids to work in the Cross at 3am is beyond me anyway.

Everyone likes to throw mud at the coppers but in reality they are doing a thankless job to the best of their ability and see the same offenders get away with all sorts of things time and time again due to the luke warm punishments handed down by the courts.

Seriously "King Hit" in the face?
These sort of hits normally impact on the side or back of the head not in the teeth.

Now I'll jump to the defence of the bouncers as they also have a hard job.  The only ones I won't defend are the arrogant thugs and the OMCG members.

The injuries could be consistent with a king hit causing the victim to fall and strike their face against the ground or a brick wall.  We simply don't know and really it doesn't matter.  He didn't deserve that degree of injury irrespective of how it started.

Are they "No neck dumb thugs".  Quick story.  A trucky had a traffic altercation with a couple of off work bouncers and threw the first punch.  The bouncers were both black belts and knocked him down where they should have stopped but they sunk the boot in and the trucky lost his spleen.  Both charged Grievous Bodily Harm.  One pleaded guilty to Bodily Harm.

The other fled the country to England then joined the Paratroopers with the French Foreign Legion.  Afterwards did international security for high value clients.  Then travelled to America where he now trains Law Enforcement.  He was (allegedly) admitted to Mensa, speaks 5 languages (3 fluently) has black belts in 5 styles and trains at a number of venues and has written several books.

He works under a variant of his correct name so no idea how he got into the USA when there was a Warrant out for his arrest.

He regularly defends Police reputations on the forums although he's been pinched a couple of times.  He was good friends with another Commissioned Officer and sent me a congratulatory letter on appointment to Commissioned rank.

He had the potential to go very bad but I think it was the discipline of the French Foreign Legion that made the difference.  I have a degree of respect for him and basically he's not a bad bloke but just got carried away once in his youth.

That happens to all sorts of people.

One of my customers was senior management at one of the security companies. Great bloke, really. Something happened in his personal life, and he pretty much turned into a kleptomaniac. Anything that wasn't nailed down got five-finger discounted. Of course it wasn't long before he got nailed, and they found all manner of booty stashed around his place.

It cost him his job, a bit of a holiday at HM's pleasure, his marriage, and who knows what else? Never heard hide nor hair of him again.

People make mistakes every day. Some get away with it, many don't. And not all recover. But regardless, the landscape is littered with victims, often including the perpetrators.

I finally gave up and emailed the buyer telling him how sorry I was for loosing his coin.
I got an email back saying I was looking for a 1 cent coin when I should be looking for a $1 coin.

QuoteThat's good. I am relieved that your motivation was innocent.
I've seen dealers try to talk down coins or banknotes they don't have in stock and talk up ones they do have. It rarely works; generally they end up making fools of themselves. I'd better not name names or Mark will put me in the sinbin.

No it doesn't. I did mention it to someone yesterday. He looked online and had trouble seeing the bagmarks on the coin. You may consider taking a scan of it and adding it to the listing.
I don't think naming names would be a good idea , it would leave Mark open to litigation.
PM's are fine tho :diablo:

I took 3 pics of that coin at an angle that showed the bagmarks the clearest so that there was NO confusion .
I could have taken pics that hid the marks but that would just have ended in tears

While we're on the subject of that coin trout, you keep spouting off about how it's the first UNC coin available.  It's not.  Not even remotely.  It's the first UNC coin in a PCGS slab that notes the variety correctly.  Better coins have been traded raw and in PCGS slabs that were not described properly on the holder.

This seems the best thread for "Post Of The Week" nominations.

I nominate Neale's post:

QuoteRE: FORUM ANNOUNCEMENT : UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT
For the competition instead of giving money as the prize why not give a coin?
There always seem to be plenty of nice (sub $15) PCGS slabs and ungraded Unc coins that Walter offers each month and I'm sure the winner will remember how he got that item with fondness every time he looks at his/her collection. Getting a few dollars credit on a monthly bank statement will soon be forgotten and money as a prize is a bit crass.
So have a bunch of slabbed/unslabbed decimals/pre-decimals for the weekly winner to pick from.
I won't mind ads with the forum as long as they are tasteful and from reputable people and firms (Walter, Drake etc). No APCGS or Chinese/Russian girls pop ups please.

OH CRAP.
I forgot today was April Fools Day.
I've been PUNKED.

I'm not sure what the prize should be. I do have a slabbed coins graded "PCGS Genuine".

We caught a plethora of Pink Snapper up to 8kg but there is a total ban on them where we fished :dash1:

Bartender
A Koala bear walks into a bar, sits down and orders a BLT sandwich.
The Koala eats the BLT sandwich, gets up, spins around, pulls a pistol out of his pouch, shoots the piano player, and proceeds to walk out of the bar.
The bartender, in shock, shouts to the Koala, "Hey, who do you think you are, you ate my sandwich and shot my piano player, and just where do you think you're going!?"
The Koala replies, "Hey, I'm a Koala. Look it up."
The frustrated bartender pulls out a dictionary from behind the bar and looks up Koala:
The dictionary said "n. a marsupial that eats shoots and leaves."

QuoteTry to let go of the idea that a high currency valuation means a strong economy and think simply in terms of supply and demand of the currency - then it'll be pretty obvious why the USD is so strong.

this is way off topic , So I have answered in this thread :ok:

I am of the opinion that currency is pretty much like shares in a company.
If the company is doing well the shares are worth more, If the company is doing badly then the share price is reflected in this.

For the Primary industries in Australia a high US dollar is a good thing and is pretty much all that is keeping a lot of the Mines in Aus viable at the moment.
I have NO idea where the demand is coming from for the USD, why would any country want to add to the US foreign debt?
I know for a fact that the Chinese have dumped Billions of USD in WA alone buying up resource projects that nobody else really wanted.
A lot of people think that these are "White Elephants" and a stupid idea.
I don't for one instant think the Chinese are stupid, they are simply getting something for a debt that the US will never be able to repay :good;

I think the USD is held up with the aid of a lot of smoke and mirrors at the moment.

Trout, the USD is so high at the moment for several reasons. For one thing it is the least ugly pig in the pen as the Europeans (Euro and Pound) and the Japs (Yen) are in worse shape and there are no other major global currencies outside those 4.
The commodities are on a downwards trend as China is about to smack into a wall of reality as construction has been a major plank of the Chinese economy (18% of GDP). Now their property market is saturated and prices are falling as investors/developers find few buyers for the 70 million empty apartments. So they will have a huge multi year depression in construction and that will have knock on effects both directly to the Chinese economy (100 million will lose jobs in construction and feeder industries such as steel mills). The knock on will also indirectly hurt China as a number of economies (Australia, Brazil plus many others) have been strong supplying the raw materials; so those economies will contract and buy less stuff from China (damaging Chinas manufacturers).
Doesn't mean the USD will remain strong, their economy will lose out on exports as buyers seek less expensive suppliers and the savings to the US economy in cheaper oil imports won't offset the damage to the US shale oil miners. Like a light-bulb that gets brighter before it burns out the USD seems strong but might be about to lose its position as THE global currency with what the BRIC nations are planning.

Default? HA! All they'd do is raise the debt limit like they have done consistently over the last 60 or so yrs. The guv'mint claims they are "only" $18 Trillion in the hole......the truth? Close to $94 Trillion. A trillion stacked $1 U S notes would reach 63,131 MILES HIGH.....that's a lot of money......never to be paid.

It's got nothing to do with the economy, it's all about investment return causing supply and demand issues.  Right now speculators are counting on increases in interest rates in the USA while they are expecting decreases here.  I for one think it's a great thing, a high dollar lines the pockets of importers and hurts exporters.  I'd rather more money go into someone's pocket who is trying to bring money in from overseas rather than some who importing TV's from China and selling them at high margins and doing nothing more than consuming our disposable income on rubbish.

And while we're on the subject of economies, Australia's is as messed up as any country in the world, the mining boom has been a great buffer and smokescreen to hide the fact that everything else here is buggered.

our farming and Pastoral people are probably the most cost efficient in the World and our Fishing industry is world Class as well.
We are also a World player in the gas industry along with significant Oil reserves.
This is ALL Primary industries .

What does let us down is our Manufacturing industries, We tend to get all our consumer items from overseas.
The Car industry was once a major part of our economy but as all the Car makers were Multinationals , they decided to DUMP the Australian manufacturers .
We are actually Bloody GOOD at making cars and I am certain that we could compete on the World stage and sell our OWN product.
Why someone with "Deep Pockets" hasn't taken up the challenge and started up a Purely Australian Car Firm using the skills and dedication that our now UNEMPLOYED car workers have is beyond Me.

And that is only a TINY part of the things we could do.
Aussies are NOT stupid But the "Easy Life" as we have known it since the 60's is pretty much OVER.
Time to tighten our belts and get off our collective arses and start being more productive and start taking some risks developing new Ideas/Businesses and export "Value Added" items instead of just RAW materials.
America, Japan and China plus many other countries  have and still do make a lot of money "Value Adding" our Primary products, it's time to cut the middlemen out and do this ourselves :ok:

then and ONLY then (Regardless of what the US dollar is worth) will we start making money instead of spending it overseas.

Just some musings and thoughts, End of rant

IMHO too many key manufacturing industries left our shores in the 70's and 80's in particular and set up shop in Asia. They were actually driven out by irresponsible trade union activity that made us non productive and uncompetitive, brought about by ridiculous and senseless demarcation disputes. A real joke actually, as these so called demarcation issues were bunged on in the name of job retention, what a load of BS.

The same thing is happening today in what industry we have left, only this time round "SAFETY" is the catch cry. Companies are compelled to fork out tens of millions in complying with insane safety legislation that was introduced by the previous government in their quest for utopia. Employees with expertise gained from years of experience in various forms of industry have been forcibly dumbed down by management regimes who are seen running scared as they seek to avoid penalties  for non compliance. Of course none of this is has anything to do with safety, it's all about people from top end to the bottom all covering their arses.

We often hear cries of how expensive the cost of living has become, make no mistake, a huge portion of the blowout in the cost of living is due to massive waste being incurred in an over the top safety regime and  then being passed on to the consumer.

It's almost as if there has been a concerted and deliberate attack on our secondary industry by key players over the past 45 years. It all seems to be about mine is bigger than yours, it's our turf and we'll stuff it up if we wish to.

I'm not against union participation or a proper safety regime, I know the importance of both after close on 47 years in heavy maintenance. I've also seen many irresponsible actions in that time that have been the cause of job losses and missed opportunities, and in most cases driven by ego, pig pigheadedness, contemptible cronyism, or laziness and short sighted greed.

Yes, I reckon we're stuffed.

I have been intimately involved with the car manufacturing industry at both a manufacturer level and a governmental level for years.  And I can tell you that the Australian car industry has been non-profitable since the early 1990's and only survived as long as it did because it was propped up by industrial welfare payments from state and federal governments.  What you have seen in the last two years was an inevitable outcome.  Australia is too small to support a profitable car industry when forced to compete on a level playing field with overseas manufacturers.  Unfortunately the playing field is far from level so it never had any hope at all once state and federal governments stopped propping it up.

Farms, mines, office blocks and residential. In parts of Sydney foreign investors (especially Chinese) own 80% of the apartments.
So do we do what Malaysia did and when they gave the Malays extra rights and privileges to counter-act the ethnic Chinese economic clout?
Markn is right about the car industry only surviving on handouts. Personally I think they should have continued the handouts as a few hundred million a year is cheaper than paying for tens of thousands of unemployed car workers/feeder industry employees.Plus save a few billion on car imports plus retain a manufacturing base of tool makers etc for when we cannot afford imports or for military self reliance.

QuoteThis country was built on the blood sweat and tears of Aboriginal Australians, White Australians, Europeans, Chinese and South Sea Islanders and the list could go on.

Why did you put Aboriginal Australians at the front of the list RG?
These people were here for Millennia Before Colonisation  as hunters and gatherers with a relatively small population  purely due to the way they lived and Nothing changed until Colonisation.
Colonisation created our Nation as we know it today Due to the sweat , blood and tears  of just about every nationality Known on the face of the Earth and since then we have achieved some amazing things.
Nobody can define an Australian via Hi/Her Race, colour or what God/gods they worship, It all about a way we live and take care of our own.
Title: RE: The Misbehavers
Post by: robbiegal on January 28, 2015, 08:09:04 PM
well you answered that yourself

they were here about 40,000 years before colonisation

the question of the advancement of a society isn't always reflected in what our white eyed school yard conditioned nationalistic perceptions of progress are
"Nothing changed until Colonisation"

What needed to change?

they sustained the country
controlled the environment with fire
replanted as they migrated across country
they didn't need to build barbed wire fences because people knew what country was their own
had hundreds of languages
had a sophisticated form of law, laws of inheritance as strict as white laws, laws on right marriage and elder driven moral order
they traded with asia and south sea islanders and png

were super healthy and fit - most coastal NSW Aboriginals were well over 6ft tall and had six packs - even the old blokes!
sensibly controlled their population according to conditions

but they didn't have guns or immunity to smallpox
the government  had the 'pillow for the dying race' but their resilience shone through and they have survived to this day to see in some real terms of reconciliation

I don't need to have argument with anybody and it is clearly evident that I am sympathetic and respectful to the Aboriginal men and women whom I grew up with in my younger years and lived close by in my older years .

I have seen these changes in my lifetime;

I saw the right for Aboriginal people to vote come in
I saw the disbandment of fringe dwelling/reserves.
I saw  black men being finally allowed to drink in a pub with their white workmates
I have seen Aboriginal women go from only being allowed to be on the hospital verandas with their new born babies to being allowed to be in the hospital wards with white women
I have seen and known women of Aboriginal decent be returned to their families from who they were snatched at a young age. (too 'white')
I have seen Aboriginal women die before they found their original family.
I have known women who had to get 'passes' to leave the reserve.
I have known women who hid the boot of cars to get out of the reserves.
I have known Aboriginal people who were NOT given permission to marry whites.

I believe that their struggle in this country has been the toughest.

BUT
in the words of Bob Marley
'if you don't know your history
then you don't know where you are coming from'

the history explains the cultural shame alcoholism and all the bad effects of white colonisation

First World War

Over 1000 Indigenous Australians fought in the First World War. They came from a section of society with few rights, low wages, and poor living conditions. Most Indigenous Australians could not vote and none were counted in the census. But once in the AIF, they were treated as equals. They were paid the same as other soldiers and generally accepted without prejudice.

Enlistment and Service First World War

When war broke out in 1914, many Indigenous Australians who tried to enlist were rejected on the grounds of race; others slipped through the net. By October 1917, when recruits were harder to find and one conscription referendum had already been lost, restrictions were cautiously eased. A new Military Order stated: "Half-castes may be enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force provided that the examining Medical Officers are satisfied that one of the parents is of European origin."

This was as far as Australia – officially – would go.
The Post First World War Period

Only one Indigenous Australian is known to have received land under a "soldier settlement" scheme, despite the fact that much of the best farming land in Aboriginal reserves was confiscated for soldier settlement blocks.

The repression of Indigenous Australians increased between the wars, as protection acts gave government officials greater control over Indigenous Australians. As late as 1928 Indigenous Australians were being massacred in reprisal raids. A considerable Aboriginal political movement in the 1930s achieved little improvement in civil rights.

You say "I believe that their struggle in this country has been the toughest." I agree 100%.

I recommend to everyone a book called "Baal Belbora" ("The End of the Dancing"). It's a history of European settlement in the Manning River area of NSW. The history is told from the Aboriginal perspective, as opposed to most of our historical accounts.

I spent a year working at the Uranium Mine at Jabiru in the Northern Territory and was befriended by an Aboriginal elder that I knew as Eddy ( I couldn't for the life of me pronounce his tribal name).
I was working 2 on one off and after a while I used to spend my first three days off with Eddy every swing and he DID tell me his Story also the links with the Knakkas in the early days as well.
I was also Privileged to be taken to some remote and truly beautiful parts of his land, including many of his Sacred sites
I imagine that I have been to and seen far more of the area around Jabiru that most of the other Non Aboriginal people that have lived there for most of their life due to my Friendship with this Man.
The difference is Eddy is still "Tribal" and he still lives that type of life (As much as he Can) and I totally respect the bloke .

yep yep, I hear you

I worked with very different mob/s up north and with people from the communities over towards the territory

with my work in the hospitals there have been elders for whom local community people were not allowed to provide counsel to because they did not have the right social standing, so I have been asked to perform that role with very sick or dying elders

I have also taken elders to the airport as they chose to go home to their country to die than be stuck in the hospital or the city to live out their days (those ones were definitely the Kleenex kind of moments)

and each and every interaction a downright privilege at that

there are somethings in life that are priceless and I guess you and I (and others here for sure) have been in receipt of those special social gifts

I do believe that there are many parallel cultures in this country and that it is supposed to be the purpose of multi-culturalism. But we all  also live in a country that had a significant pre-European history and the entire continent is dotted with sacred places, the right places for the dreaming stories to be told and to express that religiosity. Anyone who has been near a sacred site will know what I mean. No different to being awe inspired by a magnificent cathedral. Historically white men couldn't see or appreciate it until the modern world caught up and we started to open our minds to begin to respect the anthropology of the Aboriginal culture (and other cultures from around the world). I don't deny that there are a heck of a lot of urban aboriginals who have lost touch with the old ways and for many, they are truly lost in their cultural and social marginalisation. (and that is another story, for sure - yes I have ran VERY FAST down hospital corridors from the odd agro (detoxing) palm islander man in my time!! ha ha ).

Quote from: 'robbiegal' pid='66203' dateline='1422437944'well you answered that yourself

they were here about 40,000 years before colonisation

the question of the advancement of a society isn't always reflected in what our white eyed school yard conditioned nationalistic perceptions of progress are
"Nothing changed until Colonisation"

I have seen these changes in my lifetime;

How often do we see an iconic depiction of an Aboriginal Anzac Soldier?
Hate to correct a few misconceptions, BUT!
They didn't sustain the country, they trashed it.
-wiped out the megafauna by repeated burning of the forests.
-created a disclimatic environment such that it took white settlement for the environment to partially recover (there is now more native forest in Australia than there has been for thousands of years). An example of this is the formerly grassy areas in western NSW are now recovering and becoming covered in scrub and forest (much to the annoyance of graziers). The Pilliga Forest used to be grasslands.
-The Australian Tiger and Australian Devil are only known as Tasmanian because the Dingo drove them to extinction on the mainland.
-The only true Aborigines were the remnants in Tassie, the rest arrived 8,000 years ago and were the third wave (they originated in northern Burma according to anthropologists and the dingo is very similar to a dog found in that region). The more recent arrivals have adopted many of the customs of the previous occupants (through intermarriage?) but are not true aborigines in the same way Torres Strait Islanders are not true aborigines. If you want to count people who are typically 3/4 white and 1/4 aboriginal as aboriginal then there are now 6,000 aborigines (Tasmanian) compared to about 2,500 at white settlement.
It is nonsense to call people who are 1/16th 'aboriginal" (the recent third wave at that) as aboriginal. My cousins wife is part Chinese, part European and part "aboriginal" so the leftie PC crowd counts her as Aboriginal and expects her to play the victim.
I wouldn't call infanticide a sensible method of controlling the population. There are a number of historical records showing mothers smashing their newborns head on the rocks and other similar actions. The women were also treated as dirt and subject to rape, mistreatment and execution (if they entered any area forbidden to women).
I have no objection to those who lead a tribal life but I do object to the blue eyed/fair haired 15/16th bog Irish urban trash who have their hands out expecting payments because of mistreatment (real or imagined) that reportedly happened to one of their ancestors.

That may be So But over the last 2-300 years we haven't done too flash either.
Most of our Best arable land is now covered in "Suburbia", Our Southern Rivers are now  pretty much just a natural sewage outlet and wherever you go you will see garbage in the Bush.

I guess if they migrated only ... what? .... 8,000 years ago then they are not really Australian aborigines

there are the arguments for and against and always will be

the burn offs also have support research that says - they did promote fauna and flora and evidence that says bushfires are now as bad as they have been during the last 200 years because the environment is not as controlled as it used to be from both naturally occurring lighting fire and the mosaic of the smaller man lit controlled grassfires

yes, there are new growth forests etc but if you take an elder from the people who owned that land - they will show you the over growth and the weeds -  they were the gardeners of this country

I think the person decides to be Aboriginal identified - I really don't believe that there's mobs of  leftie PC's forcing anyone to be counted in nor expect them to play the victim - I do believe a lot of people choose to monopolise on that available option and I guess there are always people who will do things like that

The intention of positive discrimination was to treat people NOT by the colour of their skin but by the colour of their soul and where they fit best in terms of their social and material culture. Your comments highlight the plight of the by-products of assimilation - the whiter the skin the less black they are. Therefore, so much closer to racial purity itself?

Some of the pointers of the 'historical records' above I honestly have never heard of and naturally will research with an interested enthusiasm although, I would also find it hard to believe that white cultures never harmed a child or a woman thus, that cruel contrast further cements the belief that they were such an 'uncivilised mob'.

That sounds so much like Nazi propaganda, I personally don't give a "Rats" about the colour of a persons skin as long their Soul is "Gold" all is good :ok:

The problem is that many "Urban Aboriginals" with absolutely NO ties to their lands , have NO respect for tribal "Colours" ( yes RG I do know about this) and are simply "Cashing in" on every Mining venture simply for monetary gain

Must be a wonderful sight. I dread this time of year, having to drive Mt Cotton road each morning and see the large number of wallabies dead on the roadside. The council or RSPA make sure the carcasses are cleaned up daily as it wouldn't be a pretty sight by the end of each week. Sometimes you see a flag placed beside the odd animal, I'm thinking they're the ones that may have a joey in the pouch. Sorry about the gruesome details, but it does happen.

I doubt it was 31.5 billion just on smoking related treatment and you forget that these people would also have paid their Medicare levy and in a lot of cases  health fund payments as well on top of the Tax that they have paid on their ciggies :ok:

Now I just need a copy of what was (pre Harry potter) the biggest selling novel in history (Ten Little N----s) without its castrated title (And Then There Were None).

The term N----R is totally inappropriate these days and in fact for the last 2-3 decades at least and is highly insulting to Black people of all countries.
I am the least politically correct person that I know and even I cringe when I hear or see this word used.
It has to be the most inflammatory and racist word known in the English language  :ok:

Nigger isn't racist unless it is used in a denigrating way. There was that silly controversy over a football stadium in Queensland (Nigger brown), there are thought police who want to edit history books to remove references to the Dambusters raid because Gibson VC had a black Labrador named Nigger. Shall the thought police also erase countries such as Niger?
BTW my kids are mixed race (half African) and one of the names I call my older son is Nigger, usually only call him that on occasion when I want to bait any thought police standing nearby.:to_pick_ones_nose_eat:

Depending where you are you will find many black people do call other blacks nigga. It can be used as a term of greeting (wassup nigga) between black mates in America or it can be used to put the trashy blacks down (like the black comedian Chris Rock when he points out the differences between black people and niggas), the mostly black or mixed race audiences laugh freely as they get what he is saying (there are videos on Youtube of Chris Rock if you want to check it out).
Also using PC expressions such as N----r or the N word is actually more offensive to some people than the word itself.
Then you also have wiggas, so how would you abbreviate that? W---a?

"Hey Whitey, that's my rabbit." Allegedly said by Maurice Tate, as a put down, referring to Don Bradman. The Don did take offence but probably at the sentiment rather than the word 'whitey'.

Probably wouldn't be offensive much now as most people would just be puzzled by the expression.

We are just a bunch of Blokes that work well together and at the end of the day have a few beers, relax and enjoy each others company.

I'm wondering if Donald has installed new extra large mirrors in the White House?

I also have a theory that the US population will vote for you if they have seen you on TV or the silver screen - thinking Ronald Reagan, Arnold Sschwarzenegger, Jesse Ventura etc etc. Am I right?

After Vilifying the Press at the Florida meeting Trump then went on to tell the crowd that Sweden had a Terrorist incident on Friday.
Maybe he should have asked the Swedes about this before he made up his own "Fake News".
Maybe some of the other Republicans in Washington should grow a Backbone and take a leaf out of Sen John McCain's book to reign in this Lunatic :good:

That was interesting. Reminded me a little of how Whitlam's policies in the early seventies upset all and sundry, also the howling rhetoric and bastardry from the Libs and the media over his attempt to borrow Arab money as a means of running the country. All sorts of skullduggery went on, from claimed interference by the C.I.A to a failure to follow accepted practice when filling a Senate vacancy by a dodgy Queensland premier.

Of course, in the end, constant bombardment by the media one out as they nearly always seem to do (excepting for the recent election of Trump), and the sheep of our nation dutifully went along on voting day and installed Malcolm Fraser's crowd into Government.

No sooner had Fraser wrested back control, the country's borrowings soon dwarfed any amount that Whitlam was intending to borrow, but of course it was from an accepted source called the International Monetary Fund...hmmm.  :diablo:

As the US dollar is the reserve currency at the moment the US is in reality borrowing money from nations all over the world.
The problem with this is that the incredible amount that the US is in debt for can never be repaid.
So this never ending printing the USD out of thin air is not only weakening the USD it is damaging every other currency at the same time.
The ONLY reason Trump got elected was because he got the "Protest" votes from people that are sick and tired of getting ripped off by their government.
The sad thing is though Trump will "Bleed" the small people to death with his huge government spending plans where he is hoping that when the rich get richer there will be a trickle down effect so that the "Peon's" will get e few crumbs out of it all, Good luck with that idea.
Also with Trumps history on reneging on deals or simply not paying his debts and his history of going bankrupt who in their right mind would do business with him and now that he is the president who would want to do business with America itself with him in charge?

If Trump goes ahead with his protectionist and nationalistic ideas also tearing up international trade agreements to start a trade war  with the rest of the World the USD will be on very shaky ground as a reserve currency.
If the USD looses its status as the reserve currency the US people will feel the pain as all those trillions of dollars in treasury bonds get cashed in by the various nations that hold them at the moment

Time will tell with Trump I guess, but it's interesting that he appears to be doing his best to antagonise the Chinese, who happen to hold a huge chunk of those treasury bonds.

I would think that the people in the US have had quite enough of their Sons and Daughters dying in the various conflicts the US has been involved with over the past few years and if Trump want's to start a shooting match with China I recon he would be out on his ear in a heartbeat.
At least I would hope so because if the US starts taking shots at China it would put Australia in a very nasty situation.

I think we'd do what we usually do and stick with the US bully because we're just puppets :dash1: But they need us more than we need them with things like their many defence bases and especially pine gap that we got paid an acorn for many many years ago

Yes, I'm none the wiser either Steve. :scratch_one-s_head:

At one point I think they mentioned if they'd put a cushion on the chair it would have been contemporary country.

It seemed to me that if they didn't like something they'd say it was just country ..... ? (That, or it was industrial ..... egad).

Perhaps I might google it one day ..........

I don't think I have ever heard the same words repeated so much in such a short period of time. (They might make good politicians).

I suspect they are the same shape* but they are not the same (as far as the light and dark shading).
I have just copied this and am going to do a cut and paste, with paste layer translucent overlayed on next pair of lines. I will keep my conclusion to myself and see what others think.

*The wording of the question may be a clue.

Pretty cool optical illusion and looks to be the same to me and as Jeff said it's just depends where the shading is as one is in the middle of the arc and the other is in the middle of the straight bit.
