coins on the MYO have something different to tell them apart from the other coins that you buy over the counter?
PPH's & Mark's page should assist Lacey

Just the P counterstamps.
P counterstamps (http://www.australian-threepence.com/blog/2011/02/important-2011-p-counterstamp-ram-dollar-coin-varieties-surface.html)
I have just looked at my "P" counterstamp coin and it is the "Punch Through" 2011 P Counterstamp Dollar coin.
I didn't really notice it until I read you blog PP.
Thanks Mate :yahoo:

We've had this discussion many times already.
When heavy press strikes have raised mintmarks and mobile press have incused, its easy.
When both look the same, it comes down to the look of the mark. Softer, with some deformation of the coin, and the position may not be precise.
Really obvious when you have both in hand.

I do try to keep up to date with stuff when I can, but have been busy

Pre-struck coins of that year had a simple raised letter (mint mark), or an incuse letter in a raised square (privy mark). These were the coins available over the counter or in the various sets the RAM foisted on us.
MYO coins were counterstamped and have the raised letter in an incuse circle.
PPH wrote something about it a couple of years back:

Any talk of heavy and light press raised by a poster above is completely irrelevant to the coins of 2011.

Apologies. But in my defence they keep changing the way they do them and its hard to keep up.

No arguments from me there. It's confusing but much less so than trying to distinguish between the so called heavy and light press strikes.
To be honest I find that whole method fundamentally flawed and unless you've owned a "light press coin" from the second it left the press then the provenance of so called light press coins is unclear. My main issue is that NOONE can say with 100% certainty that the RAM didn't run some coins at a lower striking pressure on the "heavy press" resulting in mint marks with a light press appearance.
Not entirely off topic but pre-striking the P counterstamp although still on the portable press in Canberra prior to being taken to Perth breaks the rules as I understood them to mean.

Except that the big difference between the two is the fact that the dies are different, being fully formed including the mintmark on the heavy presses. Given the way metal flows, light pressure would look quite different to a portable press strike.

Absolutely! I think it shows a lack of integrity, putting profits first and foremost. But sadly I have a pretty low opinion of the mints anyway, and nothing would surprise me. :(
So am I right in saying the coin I have with a plain 'C' came from the MYO press in Canberra?
please just a simple yes or no/

No. It can be the production press or the MYO.

Its not that simple. The C MYOs are done on heavy presses (a fine pic is at http://mendosus.com/cmt.html along with lots of other goodies) which turn blanks into fully formed coins. So the mintmark is on the die along with the rest of the design. Whether its raised on in an incused circle is pretty much irrelevant to the process.
The portable presses can't deliver the pressure to form a coin, so they only strike the actual mintmark onto prestruck coins. Its a manual process, and subject to errors, as we've seen. It also produces a visibly different result.
Since portable presses have been used in Canberra, it is therefore possible to get three different coins which are all ostensibly the same.

No. It could also be a C mintmark from the 4 coin mintmark privy CSBM set.

They were not used in Canberra in 2011. The only two alternatives are the gallery press and the production press.

is the coin in the coin folder that came with the MYO coins?
do you have a picture of the coin?
I thought that others had supplied an answer but...
OK, here is my answer.
The plain "C", not in a circle or square was either minted on one of the main floor production presses or on either of the two Visitor Gallery Presses.
If the coin is in a RAM's Head Folder, then was minted on either of the two Visitor Gallery Presses.
If the coin came from the Four Coin Foldered Set then the coin was minted on a production press.
good explanation
I remembered that I had sent that coin over to Lacey from the MYO gallery
that is why I asked her the extra questions
this is a photo of the MYO - gallery press C mintmark 2011 RAM $1
don't know if that helps
(http://i1285.photobucket.com/albums/a585/auntyrobbs/decimals/P1010038_zps5d56324a.jpg)
Mint Visitor Gallery has 2 "Mint You're Own" coin presses and same coin is in the packaged set
I did wonder that
so the answer is - there is no difference
doesn't matter which packaging the coin originally came from i.e off the shelf packets of the 4 or 5 or from the gallery presses
Does anyone know the mintage of 2011 Rams Head $1- coin from Mints Gallery Presses where you mint your own coin, not standard C Mintmark?
I have looked through RAM Annual Reports for 2011 & 2012 and cannot locate the coin mintage.
Thanks
Probably a bit of a late reply but this is what I have found ....
