The 2001 20c are becoming harder to find in circulation so thats a good one. I havent noticed a decline in 50c numbers much though.
The 10p is interesting. I havent seen one of thos ein circulation here before.
I dont see the significance of the 1997 $2 though.
Over the past couple of days I have picked up a 1977 50c and a 1981 Charles & Di 50c that were both still quite lustrous and in very good condition.
Its amazing that coins in this state are still floating around after all these years. The 1977 is probably now the best one I have from circulation even compared to ones I captured when they were originally issued.

My wife left a small pile of change laying on a table. What attracted me was that one coin in particular looked very bright - turned out to be a 2012 Remembrance $2. Also in the pile a 2003 Volunteers $1, a 1997 50c and a 1981 50c which, while not scarce, was in surprisingly good nick.
Given that success I also checked out her purse - came up with a 2011 $2, a 2009 $1 (Pension) and a 2008 gap 20c.
Quite a reasonable haul from less than $20 worth of coins. I have encouraged her to return to the place where she got most of them from (the building canteen) to see what else we can find!

Some guy handed me 2 x 50c milennium coins today. One was an incuse. Haven't seen one before, but was very interesting to see the difference between the two.
Ive got 4 of each 2011 10c and $2. They have both been turning up for about 2 weeks but are far and few between. Leant over the Woolies counter to have a gawk at the coin tray and saw some rememberance day $2 today. Woman would only give me 2 :(
Well today’s probably going to be the only chance of getting cool stuff in change, (for me) I told my contacts to save anything from the till, also said if you get a security baggie of $2 coin I want them all!

I have only got a shiny NZ 50c coin; they are like half the size of what the old ones used to be.
I forgot I also got a 2007 UAE 1 Dirham. Same size as 10c. :winkextra:
The NZ coins post 2006 are heaps smaller. I suppose we will go that way eventually as well. Our coins are quite large and heavy really.

No special name I could find for the plains Indians one. Hawaiians had them ("Mahiole") but the feathers were upswept, to the front.

Today I picked out a 2010 centenary of coinage $1 coin. Not bad nick, bit dull but still a nice addition

I've been doing most of my posts on my iPhone so the picture size is huge, I will hopefully get some snaps with a little camera and do it through a normal computer over the next couple days. Start posting some of my good coins and show you all.
I seem to get a few of the NCLT in my change. Over the years I have had Howard Florey, Last Anzac, Small head Charles Kingsford Smuth, Harbour Bridge, Co-operatives, 2012 AFL premiership, Waltzing Matilda, Eureka Stockade $1 coins. It's good that people are so oblivious to what they have in their hands.

It is interesting to hear that several forum members have not found any at all. I have about 30 NCLT's still in my top draw as spares so I just might list them over the next couple ofm days and if people want them, I would let them go a face value plus postage.

I've found one of the 2000 army dollars (actually it was found by a family member) and I once saw a Last ANZACs dollar but I didn't get my hands on it.
All I can say is keep looking. The NCLT's are out there waiting to be found.
My last bag of 500 $1 coins from the bank, yesterday, gave me two NCLT's that were badly beaten up as are most of the NCLT's I find in circulation.
I have sold many parcels of circulating NCLT's on ebay as space fillers etc and sold heaps to a former forum member for his friends overseas.
There is a market for circulating NCLT's.

Yes kel, no problems at all. My EBay name is 2789616 but no coins up for grabs at present. The last lot ended mid last week.
I generally put two separate ads when I do post on EBay.
Since mid Dec 2012, I have sold a total of 65 coins, two being Mules and 21 being 2001 COF Upsets. The rest were NCLT's, Rabbits etc.
The upsets are currently averaging $36.05 per coin. Not bad considering I have received top price of $86.00 for one coin.

A run of comemoratives. Today my wife asked me to go buy a couple of items from the local shop. She handed me 5 $1 coins and a $5 note. Quite by chance 3 of the coins were commemoratives 2001 Centenary of federation, 2002 Outback, 2008 Centenary of scouting. Nothing special but Ist off space fillers. I put them aside and took another note. A $1 I received in change from the shop was a nice clean 1996 Sir Henry Parkes an upgrade to one I already had. 4 out of 6 $1 coins handled in the day different commemoratives. Whats the odds on that. OK a late edit. just a quick check on releases. Over a perid of tlme 17 Comems against 10 Standard. The percentage seems average.
I got another 2011 10c piece the other day. First one I've seen in a while.

Took $1,025 of reject coins to the bank today (FINALLY ran out of 5¢!! Yay!), and since I was the only customer in the place, we got chatting while counting. Teller was fascinated with the whole collecting thing. So when he asked what I wanted to do with the grand, I asked for fivers, and proceeded to check them at the counter. Again, he asked what I was looking for, so I explained. Got 5 keepers, a radar, a nice new one, and a couple of BA's. So then I said turn the rejects into $100's, as we'd already discussed test notes. He actually went through all his notes checking numbers for me, and pulled out two of them. Made it a useful excercise overall.
I am definitely going to have to cultivate this one... I promised to take in some finds next week to show him, and he'll keep an eye out for interesting "junk" destined for destruction. :)

Nice mate nice, I come across some notes every now and than so I must remember to keep them and post up here for anyone that may be interested. My partner usually spends them as she says I already collect too many coins :dodgy: I'm slowly getting my bank tellers interested, my dad reckons I should go nuts and open up a second bank account to noodle double to coins lol..

I did that. Opened a CBA account, then discovered the bastards were taking tax out of it, making it a very poor investment, so I emptied it. But I still qualify as a customer, so I can happily go and noodle their stockpiles I guess. :)

Went back today to turn a couple of bundles of $5 notes back into coins, and as promised I took some 2x2's in to show him. And he pulled a pair of crisp, almost unharmed paper $50's plus a federation $5 out of the junk pile for me. :yahoo:

It never occurred to me that one could noodle for fun and profit (mostly fun), until I joined up here. I even have my 92 year old aunt noodling her purse. :)
I have proof and unc sets but I don't have a circulated set. I did have 40 or 50 commemoratives set aside but today I went through all the change in the house and found another 50 coins. I have no idea how many coins I'm likely to find or need or want and I wont bore you with daily updates.
I realise I probably will never get a full set but thats not the point, is it? I would say the find of the day was a 1966 20 cent.

I know how you feel, I found a very nice 1978 20 cent, not the lowest of mintages but still good looking, than I flip the coin to look at the reverse and it's been coloured in with a texta or something lol
I'm still to find a nice looking 1971, I've got a good looking "68" 20 cent with nice rainbow toning but it's a fairly dark coin so I can't get a clear piccie of the toning!!!

I never had an interest in the American quarter dollar until a good friend at work gave me the whole 'state' series as a gift
her husband captains an Australian navy ship and when they were off over in Hawaii and there about he had the guys and gals on the ship collecting the state series for him to put sets together for the family
it most certainly was a team effort!
the outcome was that I was given a set not only from circulation but from a great team of Australian naval personnel
and now I know about them!! that is why I recognised that coin today

They invented the word "bindle" for foreign coins that are dropped into our change.

The US State Quarters are a beautiful set to collect. My wife started collection these 25c pieces when we went on the Cherry Blossom Cruise on the Pacific princess. The laundry required 25c coins and one had to go to the Purser's office and exchange notes for coin for the washing and drying machines. It took time to collect and the very last one she needed, for the state of Nebraska, I found whilst noodling $1 coins from poker machines.
She still has the full set somewhere.
I am led to believe that there are, in fact two sets of these. That is because two mints in the US minted these coins with there own mint mark. I may have got this bit of info from the last Coin Forum that collapsed.
You are correct, there is Denver and Philadephlia mints.
I have the full set of 50, mostly in UNC.
I love the state series quarters, and have an uncirculated set, and a set sent from the US in the collectable folder.
I also recently purchased the hologram series of 50 quarters, in ten little black boxes, a really neat collection.
I am most of the way into the national park quarters also.
I wholeheartedly agree about the addictive qualities of it all.
I also have just gone through my pages of 2005 Remembrance 50cent and found 7 with cud, 6 under priest robe and 1 above soldier helmet. It's an excitement exercise isn't it.

They all have a Mint Mark on them, either P or D.
It's on the Obv under 'In God We Trust".
Earlier USA coins had "D" for Denver "S" for San Francisco and Philadelphia didn't have a mark (which was the mintmark, in effect). I think "P" was started being used in the early 1970s.

I didn't mention the 'S' MM, as in the majority of cases they're Proof, but earlier this year someone from CCF told me that some 'S' MM coins were going to be circulated.

Got it. The 'S' MM coins going into circulation are the ATB Quarters from 2012 onwards as far as I can ascertain. The following is copied from an email I rec'd back in June 2012

It is copper you see. Our "clad" coins....10c, 25c, & 50 c. The outter layer is 75% copper and 25% nickel (The alloy for our nickel) bonded to an inner core of pure copper. The clad coins are 10.25% lighter than their counterparts of the silver versions (1964 and earlier)

She spills open her purse and in it is 1 20c peice, flip it over and its a 1966 20 cent peice??? could it be?? looked at it and no cigar, imagine if it were a wavy 20???

I got a 2001 Norfolk Island 50c and a 2001 Victoria 20c both within about half an hour of each other yesterday.

From memory, it had a big rim cud. I had it in my pocket when I met up with Ian Hartshorn at a coin show in Ferntree Gully a few years ago, so naturally I handed it to him. Imagine my surprise when he said "its also an upset", by about 20 degrees, IIRC!
Its in a 2x2, somewhere in my albums, probably with a bunch of other rim cuds. I'll see if I can hunt it down for you.

Interesting list there Nevol. However, I am only interested in $1, 50c and 20c upsets as I can get plenty of them from the bank in bulk to search through.

I have found quite a few cuds on these coins and still have a few spares. However, not finding much these days as I can only get $500 worth of coins at a time and not getting the quantity that I used to get. Because of this, I am returning to circulation any cud coins that I already have.

mate , no difference, between offset and upset just what I write on some as I don't know the right term for them .
2 nd question , place coin in 2 x 2 , then put a cross on both sides of
2 x 2 and that shows correctly the degree of the upset, with out

When placing a suspected upset coin in a 2x2, it's usually best to place the reverse in the upright position. This is because it's the Obv that gets rotated (as Fulvio said).
I have a few 2001 20c that are rotated, but it's so slight, that I haven't even bothered to put them in 2x2's. I think it's only about 5° and that's most likely within the RAM's tolerance. I also have some $1's that are similar. Can't remember which years though.

One just can't say "it's the obverse that is rotated". This may not be the case.
Take for example the 2001 Cent of Federation, it is the Obverse, (Heads), that rotates and not the Reverse, (Tails). Prove it you will say well here goes.
Have a good look at the alignment of the Reeding on the 2001 COF $1 coin and compare it's position with that of the letter "TI" of the word FEDERATION. It is in the same alignment on any of these coins , it doesn't move. Now have a look at the Obverse and one can clearly see, if you have an upset, that the Obverse is rotated or moves from the alignment of the Reeding described above. This then proves the Obverse rotates and not the Reverse. I gave this scenario to the RAM personnel when many years ago, they threw the production floor open and I took some upsets and Mules to show the RAM. After seeing my coins two things happened:
1. My scenario re the movement of the Obverse on the 2001 COF $1 coins was agreed; and
2. The then CEO of RAM confirmed the existence of the 2000 Mule. Up till this time, it was denied by the RAM.
Now, to give blanket state that it is the Obverse that moves on all upsets is wrong until proved.

always the bottom, anvil die, and cannot rotate. Therefore its always the top, hammer die, the Obverse, which rotates.
That's why I mount them the way I do, and I suspect most others do too. Nothing to do with the relative importance of the portrait or anything. Besides, given that some Reverses don't have clear alignment hints in their designs, it provides for more consistency and makes it easier.
Didn't someone fairly recently post the tolerances the mint finds acceptable? It wasn't much, IIRC.
I also understood the Obv was nearly always the hammer die, that's why I use the Rev to orient the coins in the 2x2's.
I have now been made aware that the hammer die is the obverse. As that is the case I give in to previous statements. Thanks for educating me.
to me it really does not matter which die moves , as long as I put them in a 2 x 2 and put a cross on both sides and line one side up north then turn it over and look at the other side and then I can see if they both meet or not , if they don't meet at the cross then I have an up set coin .
I also use your invention , bruce with the cardboard with the hole in the middle and put the coin in it and I have the degrees worked out like a clock on the cardboard , but only in 5 minutes lots ..

That's exactly why I make the reverse the right way up.
Two weeks ago I went to the bank to change $350 into $1 coins as part of a cheeky 21st birthday present from our friendship group. When building a pyramid out of the $1 coins (because I was procrastinating from assignment work), I found three $1 coins that shouldn't have been in there: 1998 Howard Florey, 2008 Centenary of Quarantine and 2012 Wheat Sheaf 'C' Mintmark. To find three non-circulating commemoratives completely shocked me and I immediately put them aside.

Today was a good day, I added 1xprincess wales 50c piece in really good nick 1 x Millenium 50c, 2x$2 rememberence coins, 4x2013 100yrs of Canberra 20c peices looks UNc, and I banked some coin and at a different branch and asked if they had any paper notes, 2x$20 and 3x$10 fraser johnston notes bit worn but still relatively crisp.
Stoked with today.

I picked up a 1959 florin in my change at the Sino Iron Boozer in the Pilbara yesterday, it is in pretty ordinary shape but it is the First silver coin I have found in my change in over 30 years :yahoo:

I got an UNc 1984 $1 coin, it stood out amongst the junk and thought it was just a 2010 or 2012 coin, quite surprised when I saw the date
I came across a 1984 $1 last week as well that was in very good nick - certainly the best one I've ever found in circulation although it wasn't quite up to error hunter's UNC standard.

This current batch is costing me a fortune in 2x2's... a pair of 270° CoF upsets, UNC 1985 and dancing man (with toe crack), 2006, dancing man and CoF rim cuds, massive 1988 cud over OLL, aUNC 1999 double wreath cuds and doubling, ditto lower grade with huge centre cud, and a CoF with a cud in the O of OF.
Then the usual run of things not quite worthy of mounts.. lots of old shinies, a few new cuds, some coins out of packs...
Oh, and add a shiny-but-fingerprinted 2010 "spewing rabbit" to that lot. ;)

I think there is a lot of merit in that statement, I have a vending machine at a bowls club, needless to say it is frequented by retirees.
Of all my sites this machine delivers the best quality collectable coins, without fail every week it will have 2-3 jubilee coins 1-2 princess Diana coins. I think the elderly are cashing in their hoarded coins??
Might be time for a visit to all banks in that suburb and ask for the collectables?

It was $500 in ziplock bags. Bank was Westpac Brandon Park, and of course all the other banks are right next door and would see the same sort of deposits.
In contrast, Chadstone, Oakleigh, Burwood and Mt Waverley are totally useless for deposited coin. Go figure.

Not quite. There are large and small reverses. The original large design was breaking apart a lot, with all manner of cracking going on, through the trident, at the bottom of the skirt, and around the hat on the right. Or all of the above. So they reduced it a bit.

And then the day turned to crap thanks to a bank manager who has zero people skills... we'll see if I can get the regional manager to reeducate him, but in the meantime I have three brand-spanking new accounts ready to transfer every penny into.. and they know it! The stress doubled my blood sugar reading, and I wasn't at all happy about that...

Today I found an excellent conditioned 2011 10c piece, and also a quite nice 2011 $2 coin my collection is coming along very quickly, I am even going to start getting $1000 of 20c pieces to sort through on those cold wet days when I can't play golf.
Needed a bag of $2 coins for change in the till at work, found 6 2013 QEII Coronation coins in the bag.
No Coronation coins yet, but my friendly coin teller did save me a handful of interesting dollars, including a pretty banged-up C mintmark 2010 coinage $1:

Just my luck I am always a day late and a dollar short. Today I go into my local branch and the teller says Darryn what are round 50c pieces worth, oh about $10-12 dollars, Really?? yes sometimes more?? oh dear, why?? well I swapped 20 of them yesterday to a customer for face value??
she said she will put aside every $2 coin for me as compensation.....

Headed off with a little more than a sack of $2 to see what Armaguard delivered. Nuffin.. just boring recirc. Oh well, thought I may as well pop next door and change the pin on my shiny new NAB card, had the usual conversation, and scored nearly ten bucks of copper. Good start.
Since I had some poppy rolls, the two upsets and the MYO with me (to show my friendly teller), I thought I'd head up to my favourite dealer and show him too. Happened to pass another shopping centre, and thought, "why not drop in?"
Ka-Ching! Two bags of very shiny 2013's, five of them coronations. All much better than normal, nearly Gem, IMO. But already a few specks of purple paint floating around inside the bags. These are not going to travel well. And by the sound of it, every bag only has 2 or 3 in it. Almost like they planned it that way to ration them. Next door, CBA hadn't even seen any, but they did have three Federation fivers. Woot!
So, after a discussion outside the dealers with an elderly gentleman who took up two parking spaces, I run into a lovely gentleman who mentions he knows someone I lost contact with. We may gain one or two new forum members from this contact. Then I get handed a gold 10¢. No idea what they did it with, but its a very nice bit of plating and I just had to have it.
The poppies come up in conversation, and I end up walking out with an aUNC 3-1/2 claw I had my eye on, and a nice handful of cash, and the gold trinket.
Stop for supplies on the way home, mention my quest, and score four aUNC cudded poppies. Then check out K-Mart, where I find polypropylene 2-ring binders for $5. If I knew what the pages were (they look a bit PVC-ish), I might have bought some. :)
I'm definitely a happy chappy.. and I haven't even opened the Armaguard sack yet. ;)

If you call into bank branches looking for "cash ins" then don't forget to ask if they have any coin wrapper pads. Amazing how many have a bundle, or three, sitting away since the year dot. Only problem is any teller under the age of about 35 will not have a clue what you are talking about!

I have a template and was actually making my own. Not rectangular, but the arrow-shaped ones the big boys use. There's definitely a skill in using them, though the right tools help heaps. I'll see if I can remember where my CoF state rolls are and take some piccies.

I was thinking of doing my own at one stage and measured ones from different banks. Surprising differences in sizes for wrappers for same coins. {Commonwealth bank ones are way smaller than any others -must have been a hard learning curve for newbies there!}
I think I still have my list of sizes somewhere.
I am not sure paper rolls are a good long term storage medium -unlikely to be acid free paper. However, old rolls, after 20 years or so on the shelf, probably have expended any acid in partially decomposing themselves!
The big secrets in making good rolls are;
•practice, practice, practice.
•make a good size tuck under at the end before rolling -helps keep it firm and there is plenty of length to get a good wrap anyway.
And, an old trick from the banks; if you don't have the correct wrappers for particular coins, grab a similar size one (for another coin) and wrap it inside out. Then pencil the coin type and total value on the [now] plain wrapper.

Having rolled coin when I was in the bank the trick is to fold the edge of the wrapper over about 5-6cm then put the coin towards the end of the folded over section gives it a bit more purchase, then roll the wrapper over the coin and tuck it in hard, if it is sloppy coins go everywhere, definitely a learned art you'll soon get frustrated with coins squirting out the ends as you roll that's what thumbs are for.

The secret I've found is in the right tool, plus a bit of perseverance. With practice, you can pretty much match the machine rolls.

Sadly, it looks like the calico sack and the cardboard box did nothing to protect them. The top surface of every roll looks foggy, and I can see early signs of verdigris.

Overall, I see no benefit in rolling like this. I'd MUCH rather stick to my new sealed bag approach. where I can jam them in tight so they can't move, and completely exclude the environment from consideration. The only advantages of rolls are in counting, since they're fixed and known quantities. That might be a factor in commerce or ebay sales, but it isn't in archival storage. Contamination is however. :(

I have noticed more early 20¢ and 50¢, in very nice condition, turning up in my noodling. Definitely seems to be more of them floating around lately. So, keep an eye out -they aren't worth much but it is good to find a better coin than is usually seen.

Ausjack: That is the one and only one I still have yet to find. I have found two of the 2010 rotated 50c pieces but not found any 2001 rotated 20c although I do hold one in my collection.

Hi Unicorn, I went into Westpac at Parramatta to bank some money. I saw they have a change machine, so I decided to try it. I put $10 in and asked for a roll of 50s. In the one roll I got 2 rotated 50s, a Tasmania COF and 2 Bass & Flinders. Bass and Flinders is my second favourite 50c after the tall ships, so I save them whenever I get them.

Going rate appears to be around $70 or so. There's a few on eBay right now including one that's been bid up to $66. Nice finds!

Lamination flaws aren't rare but they are certainly not common . Many of my flaws are on the earlier type coins.
That one is definitely a KEEPER.

There have been quite a few of these 50c with milling on the edge show up that I'm beginning to think now that it must somehow be related to either coin rolling machines, or food / drink dispensing machines.
I know one of our members operates quite a few food / drink dispensing machines, so perhaps he might let us know if he's ever come across anything like them.
We have tended to label them as PMD, which of course they are, but without really trying to work out just how it's occurring.

If it was coin-op or rolling machines, there would be lots of examples, for all years, in all sorts of condition.
If there were multiple examples, and they were all the same year, and new, then logically whatever happened to them occurred inside the mint. I can't see how it would happen inside the press, so that still technically makes it PMD, but it would give them some legitimacy at least.

I have found several of this type of "damage" whilst I have been searching the 50c pieces for the 2010 upset.
I shall in future keep them and post pickies as I find them.
The only comment I would like to add is that until someone can produce proof of a "backyard/garage" damage, I shall treat them as errors from now on.

I'm not disputing anyone can make one. But when someone does, they're either being vandals or they're trying to rip someone off.
The latter are easy to spot. A few dodgy sellers have been identified already.
The former are not selective. They ruin coins just because they can. They don't make pretend errors then toss them into the pond.

AJ, that looks nothing like jozk's coin. Even with the poor pics, its clear that the milling extends across three faces, and is curved. Pretty much as if it were a partial collar, except we know that's not possible. I don't think these can be made using another coin... the surface would have to be concave, not convex to achieve that result.

Things to note:
It looks like a rotated partial tilted collar, except of course it can't be. But regardless, the serrations are off something dodecagonal, not round.
The milling looks like nothing we have on coins.
There are sharp 90° angles at both inner and outer edges of the step, with no sign of metal squeezed out, as you would get in a vice.
I'm leaning towards some part of the press mechanism itself, or perhaps some foreign object caught in the collar. I'm really not seeing this as PMD.
Late thought: Has anyone seen a similar error, minus the milling? Is such a tilted collar even possible?
I'll concede it could be from an ejector as I've never seen the machine but I can't come at milling sorry as the marks should go inward and I'd have thought are too wide to be from one of our coins..or it's from an O/S coin but who knows, very strange indeed.

It is quite nice. This one has very few bagmarks, suggesting its only had one owner, or possibly two if it was stolen. Would have been nice to see them in circulation, but they would not have worn well. Probably on a par with 1994's or 2005's. :(

Today in a coin box was the best quality 1974 20cent piece I have seen, it hasn't a mark on it so clean and crisp looking you can make out every claw of the platypus and the wording is sharp as a tack I couldn't believe it when I saw it, It doesn't look like it was in a mint set or the likes as it has that dullish finish to it, I put it aside real quick.

Its a little different to the others posted previously.
The indent is the length of the word "REMEMBRANCE", and goes from half the thickness of the coin, to a sharp point. Nowhere as neat as the others either. Instead of a right-angled cut, its curved, and the thinner half has been sliced away and pushed down the face of the coin. The corner's also been crushed and bulged out. Bright shiny metal, so quite recent.
Whatever is doing this has to be applying a hell of a lot of force. I still can't see a vending machine having a meaty enough coin mechanism to do this, nor is it being done manually. So what handles coins and has that kind of grunt?

Those that I have found in my noodling only shows that pattern on the side of the coin and no visible damage anywhere else.
I believe, with the number I have, that it is due to some form of production fault.
I shall keep track from now on as to the coin involved.

As for the pic quality, well, I'm completely out of desk space, so it was perched on top of a 6" stack of coins... :dodgy:
Anyway, I've changed my stance on it being mint-induced damage. If it were, it would have had 8 years in circulation to take the shine off. Whatever happened to this is recent. Very recent.
It looks as if there's part of the coin sheared off but still attached on the thick end of the piece, tapering off above anc. Is that the case?
I see notches on the sheared off piece as well, and it does look like it's the result of a very recent event.

Re the 50c coins with damage.
I have found several. My guess is some type of coin handling machine.. I think there is a toothed roller to guide the coins and the flat sides on the 50c causes them to jam against each other and then the roller puts those marks on the side.
Hmmm... Today's sack just coughed up a shiny EF-ish 1993 50¢... Definitely came out of a collection I reckon.

Some marking on the opposite side but very slight and completely different so I'd rule our pliars, multigrips etc and being so new is in otherwise excellent condition.

No it did come from circulation. Looking at the top of the indentation it shows the edges are tapered and that seems more consistent with a cog rather than grips. By "production" I mean after the stamping and probably in the counting or packaging.

Yup, I got that. MD rather than PMD. An irrelevant distinction to many (most?) but I'd like to know.
Just like I'd like to know the cause of the MD marks on the edges of new $2 coins. Like the above, but a single tooth that goes half way across the coin. And the (possibly) associated error that has a "nipple" extending one of the milled ridges clear of the coin face.
I have found these damaged 50c occurring on quite old coins and the damage looks fresh and shiny, so I am pretty sure it is not happening at the mint. The also seem to have only surfaced fairly recently (maybe the last year or so?) The earliest discussion I remember was on CCF where Larena was being told that the coins were PMD rather than a mint error.

Which fits with my 2005. But there's more than one thing going on here. A good portion of the UNC 2013 $2's of both types have the half-width notches, so that's happening in the mint. And that 5¢ looks different again, so it could go either way. But the 50¢ are definitely PMD, yes.

Got some 2013 dollars in change today. I've been reluctant to open any of my UNC bags, so these are my first. Two of them have a pair of 'spears'... flat surface cuds much like you see on platypus bills in various years. One from the large roo's nose, the other from the nearby tail. Both go to the middle of the big fella's back, where there is a small pointy cud/crack. I expect that later examples may well show a large cud at this location, so keep an eye out. A third coin has a crack at the juncture of the big roos leg and belly, much like we've seen previously.

One of my UNC bags was torn, so I had a look at the coins... six examples which not only have the same error above, but also a jagged crack from the rear tip of HM's neck to the heel of the L. I've never seen one in this location that was longer than a couple of mm.

Yesterday at lunch, my Workmate got 2 purple $2 Dollar coins in change. Some time ago he got a red Poppy $2. When I mentioned it was a special one, it rekindled his interest. After his luck yesterday, I then came up with an excuse to get some more $2 Coins and got one. We cleaned out their change drawer though !

In the last couple of days I have been given a very ordinary Silver Jubilee 50 Cent, and a very Nice Captain Cook 50 Cent. Happy to get another Cap Cook Coin.
Well, not exactly found in my change, but I'm doing a trade with 3 overseas friends at the moment, and I'm trying to find the coins they need in the till at work. So today I managed to find quite a few they needed, but I also found a very nice XF 1984 Mob of Roos and an UNC 1986 Year of Peace $1. Someones collection has been raided.
I found a 2013 5 cent coin with no SD marking under the "5". There is a microscopic trace of the SD in certain good light but through a maggy lamp there is nothing. I guess there has been a dud die when this coin has been minted.

I think it was yesterday I got a 2 Dollar. 2014 not sure what it is. Looks more Gold in colour, and very shiny. Darker tinge on the LHS. That and the weight ( not heavy ) make me think it may be from a Mint set. Any other idea's ?

Had a quick check back, seems I have a couple of 2010 $1 rabbit ears with a cud forming on the tail , 2 roos in front of it. Another labelled roo rump, which is the last roo with a smallish cud on it's back. Another marked spew roo, in between the last 2 roos. That's a reasonable size cud on it's back. Also one only 2009 marked poo roo. Amazing what you can forget about. :) So technically refound today. :)

Got given a 1992 10c in change today as well, still in pretty good nick. First proof in change for me. :)
Well, not exactly in my change, but today I found three foreign coins in one bag of 10c coins, in the till at work.
I spotted something wasn't quite right in the bag, so opened it up and took out a 1999 100 Rupiah coin from Indonesia.
Then on further inspection, I found a 2010 1000 Rupiah and a 2006 NZ 50 cent. So much for quality control at the banks.
Not much quality control anywhere these days Steve but at least you found a few.
Purple 2$ coin... but one of the purple stripes is missing :(

I went into town today to post a parcel over seas to the usa,
I gave it to the lady , and she put it on her scales to weight it .
and she said to me that will be $15.45 thanks , so I gave her a

I was wondering if any of the Woolies blue $2 had found there way into their tills and just casually asked if they had any coloured $2 coins. Lo and behold the girl plucks out a 2013 Purple. Yep,as i said in the other Thread the local TAB manager has several plastic bank bags of them taken from change in the TAB.His theory is people aren't fools,if Woolworths are handling the distribution they're only one step up from their other card & token giveaways.

Are you really sure it's a die fill? To me, it looks as if they've rubbed out the final digit to prepare the die for the next year, but forgotten to add the new digit that was meant to replace it. Do you think this is possible?

Indeed top condition for a fifteen year old coin. That's why it pays to look at your change.
I think the reason many of the lower mintage coins turn up in such good condition is that people put them away when they first come out and much later they end up spending them.
That's one of my favourite coins. It's such an honour to have it representing my home state!

Found a 1991 Ram's head 50c today.
Don't seem to find many of those any more.
Indeed they are very few and far between lately.
The annoying thing about the ram's head coins is that the ones that have survived have all been damaged in some way. I put one back in the pond recently because the rim had a large dent in it, but the next one I found was covered in a nasty film that looked suspiciously like PVC. I haven't found any more since, but I've had lots of luck with the 1985s, so I remain hopeful.

Yeah,i had a 4 litre ice cream tub full from the days of running a 24 hr Roadhouse,i sold many of the lesser grades for $5+ in the early days of Ebay.I haven't seen one in circulation for years and i often go thru. $50-$100 worth of change from the Bank,the 2001 State ones are also scarce,if you do find one its well worn.
I received a 2013 $2 coronation coin in change!! It was in good condition also and reminded me of the excitement of when they first came out.

Kel, if you paid thru paypal then get a refund thru paypal as item is not as described.
when you get ya coin compare it to the pic because you never get two coins with exactly the same bag marks so you should be able to tell if it's the same coin.

I am of the understanding that the spew roos and the rabbit ears are a design problem that creates a weak spot on the dies that causes these errors.
Because of this these errors can be expected to occur with every mintage.

Anyway, I was just looking at https://www.ramint.gov.au/fifty-cents and I noticed the AIATSIS 50c coin has a tiny montage (3 million).

I've never ever gotten one of the AIATSIS 50 cents from change here in Adelaide before. I've only managed to find one after noodling almost $1500 worth of 50 cent rolls - and sadly, it's not in the best condition. Probably got brought down from QLD haha. Shall keep going till I get a nice one!
That's really unfortunate, rollycoins. I've noodled 126 of them so far, out of 7959 ($3979.50 worth of) 50c coins. That's a rate of 1.6%, or one in every 63 ($31.50 worth of) 50c coins. I still find it hard to believe that the mintage is only 3 million, so I'm glad you can shed some light on this.

I very much doubt it. The mint doesn't decide where the coins go - Armaguard does, and they couldn't care less which design's printed on them. Armaguard would have sent them up here because there was a shortage of 50c coins in Brisbane at the time, so I think it's just a coincidence that most of them ended up being AIATSIS ones.

I guess it depends on where you live. I've never found any of those ones in change, but I've managed to noodle 13 of them over the last 15 months. Conversely, a family member went to Melbourne recently and picked one up in change, so I suspect they're a lot more common down there than up here.

I still get very excited whenever I find an International Women's Day coin, especially when it's been well-looked after.
Here are some of my noodling stats:
2011 Wedding: 13 (Mintage: 10.1 million)
2011 Women: 13 (Mintage: 6.8 million)
2011 Volunteers: 27 (Mintage: 6.1 million)

Now let's convert these to percentages:

I think Herc is correct as noodling & finding in change should have the same overall probability. It's only that the sample size in noodling is greater. Probability stays the same being: ((A: Number of a particular mintage in circulation at the time) / (B:Total number of coins of that denomination in circulation at the time))
As Herc is indicating results from a larger sample size, the probability derived should be more accurate as we'll never ever be able to determine values for A & B. Factors such as minuscule sample sizes and cashed in hoards will always distort the any resulting probabilities.
Runway is correct in as much as finding in change & noodling are different, but that's merely due to the larger sample sizes when actively seeking.

It is what is commonly called "road kill". Most probably fell out of someones pocket/purse and either has been run over by a vehicle or most probably mowed over with a lawn mower.
Sorry, it definitely isn't an error coin.

My problem with this coin is that both sides appear to be rotated by the same amount, so in effect, they cancel each other out. When the IRB portrait is unrotated, the point underneath the queen's head usually points directly downwards, not down and to the right as Gnome has it. I think that if the obverse were held in this position, which I use as a reference for my own calculations, we would find that this coin isn't rotated at all. :ok:

I use the point of the crown as the point I check from, it's usually lined up nicely with the reverse.
Found another changeover $1 coin today. That makes 3 now.
A couple of interesting $2 coins have just turned up here.
My wife found this one in her change, brought it home and said it was a pity it had a dent on the bottom. Indeed, it does look like that with a quick glance but it is markings exactly corresponding with only one segment of the edge reeding -more pronounced on the obverse.
I am not sure what mechanism would cause this. Does anyone know?

A couple of days ago a teller at the bank asked me if I had seen a $2 coin with a double edge? I immediately thought mule (just kidding) probably an offset strike.
Today she showed it to me and it is a definite, well centered double rim on the obverse. Size looks a little wrong so I measured it and used the above mentioned coin as a comparison;
Double rim 2016 $2
Diameter 20.82mm 20.50mm
Thickness 2.68mm 2.84mm
Mass 6.43g 6.60g
Could it be a wrong planchet? Checked edge more closely (it is a well worn coin) and reeding is there faintly. Also faintly a tiny ridge along the obverse edge -looks like a collar error but coin seems a little too light!
Theories anyone?

I don't know much about the second coin, but the "dent" on the first coin is something I've seen several times before. My records show that I found one on a Standard 2014 $2 coin in August last year, but I never got around to asking anyone what caused it. I'm very sure that these "dents" are made by the mint, but I'm not sure how or why. I wouldn't complain about getting one on a changeover coin, because I've only seen this phenomenon 1-3 times on 13800 $2 coins, and I've never seen it on a commemorative one. I suspect it would sell for $5-$10 on eBay. :good:
BTW my one is also at the very bottom of the obverse underneath the queen, so it must be something to do with the way they hold the coins in the machines. Otherwise, it would appear on any part of the rim, and on any side of the coin, rather than in that specific location every single time. :ok:
Jeff, the bottom one is curious.
There seems to be quite a lot of flatening on the legend on both sides, so I'm wondering if it's been pressed? That could explain the increased diameter and reduced thickness. The under weight, not sure, but I fancy that I see some incidation of rotational marks in the fields, especially on the obverse. (but then again I fancy I see a lot of things, being a unicorn and all :laugh2: ).
I've got a few of those indents as well! They're actually fairly common. Seen quite a few more but stopped hanging on to them. There's only so much dough to go around :yahoo:
I've got two changeover $2 with the indents, 2 from 2015, 1 from 2014 and the 2008 just has a similar pattern going at the upper left quadrant. Not sure how they happen too, but just hung on to them as they looked interesting.

I think the 2008 one is a different phenomenon to the others. Sometimes the die is titled slightly, leaving an extra rim around part of the edge, which appears to be the case with the 2008 one. However, there is no tilting on the others, so I find it interesting that these indents even occur, let alone in the same location.
I've got some coins like this stashed somewhere, I believe I posted some images to see what possible explanations there could be.

Hi Guys, the 1998 coin is probably from the "Someother" Mint in china.
There was a fair bit about loads of fakes flooding the market at that time.
There was a bunch of articles in CAB, my mind has gone blank about exactly when but I did an article myself.
Naturally it was an offence to even hold one in your hand so I never wound up with any examples...ho ho.
You guys with better memories may recall all the hoo ha at the time I think the feds stepped in and cut the source off.
Probably jailed someone or shot someone to stop it.

Now that Fred mentions it, I do remember Brissyboy telling me about the fake $2 coins. I can't remember the specific years, but the giveaway was the really scruffy look to them, looking very worn, just like the 1998 one.
I think there was more than 1 year involved then, all from the 90's with the Q's 3rd Portrait.
Totally different to the 2003 fakes with spaghetti hair that surfaced later on.

I think Fred might be right. I did some research on fakes and came up with mentions of 1988, 1992, 1996, 1997, 2002 and 2003 being found.
Some of the identifying feature mentioned are;
•Offset and/or double rims,
•Larger diameter than genuine,
•Appearance of excessive wear (probably made that way).
So, although 1998 is not on the list, I will put it as a fake unless someone comes up with a better suggestion.

Hi All, I checked back in my archives and found the CAB article that kicked me off into doing some $2 research in 2012, that by the way was never published in CAB, it was far too long.
The original article was by W.C. Holt in the CAB October 2007 issue and included images from his web site "oldmoney.com".
W.C put the fakes into categories and I extended that further in my research ( with type1, type2,type3 and so on) where I went through my "error" coin collection and found all sorts of odd looking $2 coins from 1995 onwards. I have a specimen that has the double rim on the queen's side and I joked that "here is another mule!", now they sell them on ebay! My God.
I may revive the article and try and trim it down a tad in size to make it publishable.
To update the article do you guys mind if I use your images from this site and possibly some words to include in an update?
If I have your permission I will always acknowledge the source of images and text and may find once I get back to my text (my mind is blank about what I wrote so i'll have to do it all again) that JeffH and Nevol have additional types.

Thanks guys, I finally read what I had written back then and found I had uncovered all the types you guys have found already and documented them as types in one article. I'll probably use Jeffh's side on view picture as I did not do such a shot to emphasise the difference in diameter of that certain type ( I think they are the recycled withdrawn coins re-struck in a slightly larger plain collar). It is only when you corral a bunch of strange looking coins into one area and compare and start thinking about it that you realise what has gone on and how many different scams have been committed. I'll also try and find a reference to the criminal action proceedings against the various people who were re-importing withdrawn coins, either restruck to freshen them up ,or plain just put back into circulation at a profit! The types that WC Holt pointed out were dead set die struck copies with "about" the same images on the sides , IE our Monarch on one side and an Elder on the other but both dimensionally wrong! Not obvious until you actually look and look again!

Hi again, re the $2 duds, I freshened up my research and will submit a new article for CAB on the subject. There were many dud $2 coins in circulation from several sources which I imagine by now have been shut down. Basically they are pressure cast/ crude die struck as the type shown by WC Holt, cast types just like that 1995 in this thread and mentioned by Andrew on the Sterling currency site available O/S "by the bag full", or re-cycled recalled coins die struck to straighten them out hence the thinner larger size, or rejects just plain re-imported into the country as mentioned where the culprit was charged with "obtaining benefit by deception".
To find the references I checked back through my CABs, contacted WC Holt, googled key words like "fake 2 dollar coins Australia" which pulls up the web sites like Sterling, oldcoins, drake sterling and so on where mentions are made. In my article I explain where I checked back through the error part of my coin collection and found about 20 coins that were odd, 1/2 of then are the usual die fills, cuds, miss-strikes and the other 1/2 are very very suspect and comply with the appearance of cast/recycled/restruck/ and those are activities not carried out at our Aussie mint! I'll keep an eye on the $2 coins in my change from now on I had completely forgotten about the "duds".

I got one of those new Possum Magic $2 coins today from Woolworths, but what an exhaustive effort that was. The cashier that served me said she didn't have any and to ask at the service desk. I went and asked if they had the new $2 coins. The response I got was "What about them?". I asked "Can I please have one?". She said "I'll have to see if I can give you one". she then goes to speak to a manager who says I can get one only if I get it in my change. I proceeded to show her that I was given $4.15 in change from the cashier and all I want is to exchange one $2 coin for another. They reluctantly agreed to exchange it for me

Yes, the three x $2 coins with be circulating coins. One this week followed by a second one next Tuesday then another week for the third.
I received two in change this morning and I saw the checkout lass tear the $50 bag open. If I had known I might have tried to buy the unbroken bag.
Tried getting the unbroken bag but to no avail! They apparently are only allowed to hand out 2 per customer and they seemed reluctant to unless you asked for it. Then again, eBay and the resources sellers there always manage to have multiple bags up for sale!
Periodically I check what coins the wife has in her purse. Today she only had about $4 in change in there but .... one was a 2010 rotated 50c :yahoo:

Nice find. It looks like Woolies has had bags of the new $2 delivered this weekend. Went in there yesterday and today and twice came out with the new $2 without actually asking for them. Went back tonight and the lady at the register offered me a bag but only as a swap as she didn't want to run out of $2 coins.

I withdrew $500 from Weston Creek ACT Commonwealth Bank ATM last week and all 10 notes were consecutive 2009 $50 they were new condition but I just changed them for coin rolls

I did the return & earn number last week (or perhaps it was the one before, my memory fails me ....... constantly) and in my refund docket change at Woollies I got 2 of the national emblem ones, so I was pretty chuffed!

Jeff - the laminations run at about 90 degrees to each other but run from the same "side" of the coin ie from the RHS edge of the obverse (near the L in Australia) and LHS edge on the reverse (a little past and above the elder's head). It would seem that there is a weakness there although the starts of the laminations are about 7.5mm from each other. There is only the very slightest sign of lamination on the reverse rim itself.

I have it in the back of my head that, even though a high mintage, not many 1965 florins actually made it into circulation. Authorities trying to keep number down prior to decimal issues in 1967. No florins minted in 1966.
Can anyone confirm that or am I getting mixed up with something else?

According to official statements by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand there were indeed no pre-decimal coins minted (for circulation) in 1966. The last pre-decimal coins (for circulation) were minted in 1965. The Florin of 1965 had a pretty high mintage of 9.450.000. In fact, the highest mintage (by a large margin) of that denomination in New Zealand ever.
Yes, I was not remembering correctly. The one I was actually thinking about was not the 1965 (last of the florins) but the 2005 20¢ (last of the florin sized, copper/nickel alloy).
The current type steel core/nickel jacketed, smaller 20¢ replaced them in 1966.
2005 20¢ mintage was 4,000,000 but it is estimated that only 178,000 actually were released to circulation. They were only in circulation for a year and then withdrawn rather quickly. So they are quite scarce and fetch good prices.

I bought a few of those 2005 20¢ from a real gentleman dealer (now sadly deceased) in New Zealand a few years ago. They were uncirculated but he had them marked down price because they were a little discloloured. As I said, a gentleman. His daughter is also a coin dealer and, as far as i know, still trades. Nevol (https://www.australian-coins.net/member.php?action=profile&uid=7) will vouch that he was as honorable dealer as you would find.

Forgot to mention I got a double-headed 2006 20c a week or two ago - I took a second look after I flipped it over.
Feels lighter than expected so I guess someone scooped out one side and glued part of another coin in.

Went to Woollies today (Mt Ommaney in Brisbane) to buy some potting mix. Got 2 bags at the front of the shop and went to the service desk to pay.
Handed over a $20 note to pay. As the lady opened the cash drawer I noticed it was chokkas with nice new shiny $1 coins.
So I asked her if I could have some of them in change. She said I can spare a few and this is what I scored .......

This weekend is the Henry Lawson Festival (https://gulgong.com.au/gulgong-henry-lawson-heritage-festival-2019/) in Gulgong. I went to the bank this afternoon to get change for a float for the rescue Squad food stall. On my list was $20 of 50¢ pieces.
Got home and sorted out the money -I had change for three stalls. And the 50¢ coins were all uncirculated 2018 Anzac Spirit. Needless to say they did not go to the rescue squad change tin.
Some of them might even pop up on my coin table tomorrow.

Some friends called in the other night for pre-Christmas drinks.
One friend used to buy the proof sets every year but stopped a few years ago because they didn't really give him pleasure any more and are not a good investment. As he said "I might as well wait a year and buy a set on eBay and probably get it cheaper." Now he just checks his change for anything interesting.
He brought eighteen 2000 Millennium 50¢ for me to have a look at in the hope he might eventually score an incused. As I spread them on the desk he asked if I could show him an incused so he can be sure of exactly what he is looking for. "No worry" was my response, plucking one from his lot; "this is one of them".
He now has a flip with and Incused Millennium in one side and a rather decent normal one in the other side.
Another drink all round was warranted we decided.
Another friend volunteered he has a wavy two so we had to check out mine, my $1 mule and an assortment of upsets and errors. Plus my crowns, 1923 florin and Melbourne florin.
The other friend has a large number of Commonwealth of Australia notes that his parents put aside from the till in a shop they had. He has promised to bring them around some time for me to check out. Looking forward to that.

Last week I withdrew $200 from the ATM. Two of the notes were consecutive numbers.
Today I cashed in a noodled, $500 bag of dollars. The bank didn't have anymore coin for me so I took cash. My noodling float now consists of ten consecutive number $50 notes! Nothing special about the numbers though.
Obviously, for the first time in several years, my local branch has received a bundle (or bundles) of new notes.

Put some coins in the coin counter at the bank and checked the coin reject only to find an American dime. It wasn't mine so I didn't complain.
I managed to get a round 50 cent in change a couple of years back. You feel like you've won the lotto.
Some friends have a market stall. They keep any "different" coins they take. Being cash only sales they do see a lot of coins.
Knowing my interest they dropped in a bag of those coins for me to look at and advise what might be worth keeping. "Worth keeping" really means "sell and make a few dollars"!
A lot of alphabet $1 and coloured $2 but not many of interest. A Centenary of Army $1 (C mark), a 1966 50¢ (well worn) a few Centenary of Federation and assorted commemoratives. Some excellent condition and others not. I will make a modest offer for a few and give them some hints on what to look for when checking their change.
P.S. The millennium 50¢ is not an incused but nice condition.

Bullion value and what it might be worth are two different things. I have sold plenty of 1966 50¢ coins (F to eF) at a couple of dollars above silver value over the years.
I got a 2001 20c with a small SD - I don't normally keep an eye for them but I did look this time and spotted one.
Picked up one of those dinosaur dollars in change today. It hasn't had an easy life.
Received a 1985 50c in change on Wednesday. Been a while since I scored one of them.

Yes, pleased to find it although I had fears initially as it was covered with black gunk on the obverse and to a lesser extent on the reverse. A couple of days soaking in dishwashing liquid and it has ended up in a quite reasonable condition. :)

Last week had my first King Charles coin. Dollar coin dated 2023 at Aldi Wetherill Park (27/12/23). Any other sightings yet?

From another family member (collected over a few years - these are the best ones I took for now) - 2001 South Australian 20c, 2012 unpainted poppy $2, 2021 S dollar, 2021 T dollar and 2021 M dollar.

From some family members last week a 1970 50c (7 not parallel with rim), a 2019 S dollar and a 1975 New Zealand 5c.
Also a 2024 10c, 20c and $2.
I picked up my usual petty cash coins from the bank just $200 and in $2 pieces.
They serve them up in plastic bags with 25 per bag.
I was amazed to find one bag all 25 coins had colored centers.
The dates ranged from 2015 to 2020, and all were close to mint state!
Usually 1 in 100 or so has color.
I'm guessing someone must have finally woken up to the fact that most $2 color shirt buttons are worth $1.99 and dumped their collection!
I looked in the Renniks coin catalog and there are thousands of the buggers, page after page of CLT and NCLT.
I'm wondering, do people actually collect these things?

Still, a bag full from the bank is a good pick up. If you could be bothered you might get double on eBag. Maybe more.

I haven't seen bags for sale on eBay yet, and that is the usual way to know they are in circulation.
The 2025 $2 Remembrance poppy wreath coins in security bags have appeared on Ebay.

Where do you get your $2 coin rolls to noodle? I know "some" banks provide them, but some banks also charge you to get them?
I basically just get coins in change.
I haven't tried my local banks in a while but Westpac let me get a limited number of rolls from a machine last time I checked.
