Title: Official ANA Grading Standards
Post by: emu666 on October 04, 2013, 01:46:20 PM
I was looking at Robster's Friday picture of his Mexican coin and his Standing Liberty Quarter and was reminded of this useful publication:

(http://www.stuartandersen.com.au/gs/gs1.JPG)

351 pages of details and pictures that are extremely useful when you have US coins.

For example, here's one of the pages dealing with the Morgan dollars;

Notice how the book deals with ALL US designs, obverse and reverse.

That is what a grading standard is about. I'm afraid that a four page leaflet, even if put out by ANDA, just doesn't do the job.

Finally Robster, this page is for you:

Seems to me if we're going to accept slabbed coins to this standard, we should adopt the whole thing. Maybe we need an aussie book like this?

It would be a large amount of work but I agree that we do need something like this.

That is a very impressive book, and I agree that it does make the ANDA four page leaflet look pretty inadequate.

Could we set up a grading chart like that for Aussie coins, in the gallery?

No, but we have experts in cleaning coins, fake toning, artificial colours, hiding verdigris spots with texta etc right here in Melbourne.
