I think it might have come about from cleaning with acetone, but forgetting to rinse.

Mine's definitely burnt. Has some carbon residue on the obverse.

But who cares? They're pretty.

I like the way it is "graduated toning" from top to bottom.   Nice.

Robbie, I hate to say this but there may be a little pvc on those coins.
Title: RE: Purple Coins
Post by: robbiegal on October 04, 2013, 08:52:34 PM
most definitely
I pulled them from carefully cared for PVC pages
many were perfect but pretty well all of the pre 1974 stuff was discoloured
all of the 1969 2 cents are purple ,
yet some 1966 ones are fairly well ok
all of the coins were taken from rolls and placed in the album pages way back when
the collector has since passed on RIP

We picked through a broken 1961 half penny roll today and found a very purple coin. Pictures to follow in a couple of days.

It's very purple around most of the rim.  Electric blue on the lighter area.  Actually the toning appears to be a film that has peeled off in some areas.  Very unusual.

I got these in a roll from VIP Coins.  The whole roll was affected and many have the rusty line across the top of the Obv, but none have it on the Rev.  Makes it look like they'd been partially submerged in water.

Shame about that rust mark.

great to see/know that the purple tone happens where PVC can't be blamed

Some nice 2c there Nevol .... that rust line really has me thinking, especially only being on the top of the obverse. Not sure about the roll being submerged as I would have thought the coins would all be at different rotations within the roll. Hmmmm ........ this is a puzzle.

I would have thought that both sides should have the rust across them, but nope, just the Obv.  It's really weird. I'll dig out the rest and see how many others have it on them.

I sometimers see coins like the 1975 c2. Usually comes off with acetone [red and black ones too]. I suspect stamp pad ink

hey just got back from a coin and stamp fair took picks of a purple proof penny for you, cos I know you would like that stuff PP, give me a few min to host the pics and put them up, xx

obviously taking pics is really hard to capture the right colour it looked pretty in hand, and shined out from the rest with the purple, not all on it comes thru in the pics, but did zoom in pics for detail. please forgive some pics, some were taken just to capture colour some were for a specific area of beading, the dealer was teaching me how to tell the difference from a proof and other strikes. but this gives you a good coverage of this coin I got the privilege to play with

$1425, HAHAHAHAHHAHAAHHAHAHAHA, the dealer would be lucky to get 1/4 of that for that 1956 proof penny (I don't mind some purple on a coin but the above one is a shocker). This is the best graded PCGS example I could find a picture of as a point of comparison.

Sorry dcoin I can understand your thoughts on the price and each their own but I actually find the rest of your statement a little insulting as AC was at a show and doing us a favour as she didn't have to and your trying to compare her pic's with a pro job..no fair mate and I can tell you because I have the bastards and that's that predecimal proof, specimen coins from wedding sets and different colour coins are very hard to capture a decent image and if you don't believe me ask Walter or Mark and they'll tell you that you need the right light and everything so I think your being a little hard dcoin and well done a top job with what you had to work with AC, I take my hat off to ya little mate and thank for sharing :hi:

dcoin , I see no comparison in your pic and the ones from A C  pic I don't know where you got your pic from but A C  had a very hard job to try and get a good pic with it being in a cover of plastic and different light and time limit because it was not her coin , she was very lucky that the owner allowed her to take the coin to take the pic of , and looking at your pic in the raw , I see looks like a lot of scratch marks across the roo,s hip and back and also above the back , just like it has been rubbed or something like a 2 x 2 plastic holder ..   ,, kel ,,

Sorry if the above post came out insulting, I was purely commenting on the price of the coin with respect to its condition (obverse fingerprint and spotting, that's what I was call shocking, not the photo).

My post had nothing to do with AC's photo and sharing of the photo, the other coin pictured was merely to show an example which appears to be full red and minus spotting/fingerprint, hope everyone understands what I was saying and appologies if it was miscommunicated / mininterpreted.
