I'll be there along with the rest of the Numismatic Association of Victoria manning the information table as always, although we're not on the doors this time. We do have a small exhibition of numismatic items on display though so if you're there swing by and say hi!
Oh and check out the event's special website (http://australiancoinshows.com.au/) for other show specials as well as a list of other attending mints and dealers. There's also an International Auction Galleries Auction on the Saturday night!
Exciting show sounds awesome

Most probably the same as previous years.
The only exciting part is that the show is being held at a place I have never been before, Etihad Stadium.

Likewise. Whether that's enough of a reason to go, well...
I'll be attending. I'm actually happy with the location. Its a lot closer to home and almost next door to my office.

I will be going as well. What day/time will you be attending plse.
czark: I think you asked me to send you a photo of the "new look" clockface. Well is a small one of the new look:
Looks great, thanks for sharing!
I'm going to try attend Friday (depending on what I can organise with work) and Saturday from 10am. I'll touch base with you closer to the date.

Roger that czark. I am planning to be there on the Friday but if I can't complete my task, I shall have to front on Saturday as well.
Goldie I'll be there Friday 10am. ;)
Hey GS, is that your display holder and if not do you get to keep it when they finish with it..just the board is the main thing I'm talking about..cheers mate :)
The display board was made special by the RAM and yes, it will be mine once the coins are returned to me.

Are you attending the Perth Mint release just prior to the opening of the show or not?
I am attending the Perth release.
Wasn't awear there was one, what time and where?
Flick an email off to the Perth mint and address it as follows and ask them for an invitation. Attendance by invite only.......
I won't be attending the Perth mint release btw.
I like the clockface
Believe it or not this was a hologram. The RAM had several displays like this. Pretty neat!
A very nice display as well. All that saw it tried to nick the coin(s) but we all failed miserably. A nice gimmick though.
Show was at the Etihad Stadium and opened up with a dinosaur release of a coin, $99.00 and the designer was there to sign the package. Tea, coffee, nibbles and a free ticket to the main exhibition and a free ticket to attend the Melbourne Museum and valid for a month.
Plenty of coins on display at the main exhibition, not too many people there as it is a working day. Mad rush to the Aust post Stand for a limited edition, 300 only, PNC called Birth Of A Prince or something like that.
Saw some good coins and one private coin was a 25 Year Coronation/Coat Of Arms 50c piece in private hands. Only the second one to surface. Very nice.
I will not state the action that happened at the RAM Portable press as someone else can tell that story.
Met up with Australian Coins and Mum and Dad, as well as Czark, Pra from an other forum. Not many others that I can remember but quite a few from the World Stamp Expo held at the Exhibition Building several months ago.
I spent all my money on a full set of Interment Camp Tokens but had to get approval from the wife first.
Sorry, no photos, maybe someone else can supply them.
All those that ordered things from me should have PM's by now.
A good show, not over crowded. Will be busy tomorrow and Sunday me thinks.
thanks!
sounds like you are enjoying yourself
I want to hear the portable press story........please

Yeah.. spill, or the mule gets it! :mafia:
BTW, I got into a discussion about the show at the coin shop. There was a guy from Perth who was in town for it. Turns out there is a way to beat the parking ripoff...
Drive down to Victoria Park station which has free parking, and either jump on a train or walk up to Flinders Street and hop on the free City Circle tram.
Maybe I'll relent and head in on Sunday.. maybe. :dodgy:
If you went to the Perth Function this morning, you were given a free entry ticket to the show.
It is best if someone else tells the story of the "portable press scenario".
Threats etc will not make me reveal what went on. Bribes might but not threats. Hehehe
Hopefully Australian Coins can fill you all in.......or maybe mum and dad..........but you will have to wait as they have run out of internet downloads etc.

Know THAT feeling... Even with multiple people I can bot bulk bandwidth from, its getting to be a monthly stress lately. :(
Went to the show today, haven't been to a coin show before so it was quite a different experience. Lots of dealers and mints in attendance to cater for a collector on any budget. As usual some dealers and their attitude is stuck well in the past, people do get set in their ways, I'm a younger collector so some people just seem unwilling to give you the time of day, but the vast majority of dealers were more than happy to help me out.
Noticeable that most stands had quite a few pcgs coins as well as a healthy stock of RAM products. There were also quite a few 2000 $1 mules for sale.
PCGS Asia and the Canadian and British mints also had stands which is different from most shows I gather.
Met emu66 and markn from this forum which was good to put a face to a name. Also managed to buy a couple of coins from Eric Eigner and Klaus Ford.
The IAG Auction is also on, had a look at a couple of lots but nothing that would fit into my collection.
QuoteMet emu66 and markn from this forum which was good to put a face to a name. Also managed to buy a couple of coins from Eric Eigner and Klaus Ford.
Sounds like you were walking with the angels there Mate.
Should of picked their brains while you were at the show, A Mass of knowledge between those identities :good:
Nice to see that most of the dealers have gotten over the attitude of "He/She is to young So forget em" attitude :good:
I must agree that there were a heap of coins that had been slabbed by PCGS on display for sale.
There were some other slabs seen but the price sticker covered the Company Slab name.
Who was selling the slabs with price sticker covering Company Slab name?

It was good to meet you Dcoin!
I went to the show yesterday expecting a lot and was disappointed. There were no international coin dealers in attendance other than John Eccles from New Zealand who comes every year to the ANDA shows anyway. The international "dealers" who were there were not dealers, they were purveyors of bullion and NCLT and other such stuff.
Plus the venue was stupidly hard to find and poorly signed. The actual stadium was hard to miss, where in the stadium the show was being held was much more difficult.
I agree Mark. I too was expecting a lot more international coin and banknote dealers.
Might have to fly overseas one day to experience such a show. Hahaha

If you weren't from Melbourne then you may have walked round the stadium once or twice looking for the small sign directing you up the lifts to the show, for sure.

Agreed. It was really just an ANDA show with the Canadian and Royal Mints there. Not very "international" at all.
I also found it difficult to locate. Did a complete lap of the stadium before having to backtrack to find the entrance.
Still I did buy a UK and Canadian Mint set plus a few other things

hey peeps, just a quick visit as I have to go out shortly, just downloaded a heaps of pics and video clips of the show and they will slowly be put up on the forum for everyone. I have pics of all the new 2014 coins with prices, and the speed painter media press event {I loved it} plus the coin auction items too, like the 37 threepence pattern and penny WOO! I got special treatment and seen things that before the public :)
We want to hear about the portable press.
haha I will start with what everyone had been waiting to see, I was given special privilege to be able to photograph the 2014 coins. (the only person) so the first pic is the colour $1 for the yearly mint set - even the mint had trouble taking pics themselves so this is the best shot I could get for capturing colour, and the second is the proof $1 gilded type for the proof set, the proof is on a cupro nickel planchet, but in the speech later on in the day the press mint guy called it a silver coin.
these coins will only be available in the yearly sets!!!
>>I have better pics for PP blog I will email them thru tomorrow<<
have pics of front and back
ah I am going out for the rest of the day so will have to add the other stuff tomorrow

I feel so much better now about not going. :yahoo:
I decided to give ANDA a big miss after a particularly disappointing show many years ago, and haven't regretted that decision yet.
Certainly don't look as fluffy in the press image (http://www.downies.com/Royal-Australian-Mint/2014-Mint-Set/5029/productview.aspx)as those in AC's shot.
Here's a show report for your perusal. No doubt there's some typos I've missed because PPH hasn't had time to cast her sharp eye over it yet. So be gentle with me.
http://www.australian-threepence.com/blog/2013/10/2013-melbourne-international-coin-and-banknote-show-report.html
Pity if the event was a flop
Your experience may vary depending upon your level of expertise. Since it's the first show, they will no doubt work out some of the bugs for next year.
When one looks about Melbourne, this show was "very poorly advertised". I really can't remember seeing anything on the TV or ads in the papers/magazines that this show was on.
The weather was fine so it wasn't the "poor old Melbourne weather" that stopped the attendance.
I would have thought that the portable press would have been the main attraction but any unsold coins would/will be passed on to collectors by other means.
The crowd wasn't much better on Friday. Maybe 100 max when the doors opened at 10am but after that the crown was very thin all day.
I have to agree that signage .about the Stadium was very, very poor. No outside advertising tarps at all.
Be interested to find out exactly the attendance for the three day show and how many dealers made a profit and those that didn't.
Quote from: 'Goldseeker' pid='31641' dateline='1382275230'how many dealers made a profit and those that didn't.
I'd bet the dealers would all be unhappy.
Shows have complex economics at the best of times. But the trend towards professional event management and deluxe venues has pretty much nailed the coffin shut on special interest shows like coins.
There are now four vested interests.
1. Attendees
2. Exhibitors
3. Venues
4. Promoters
The problem is the promoters make a killing. So does the venue.
Exhibitors pay an absolute fortune to attend.
And Attendees cop it in the neck for everything from admission to parking to food to travel, since the glitzy venues are all in the CBD where travel/parking is a hassle.
So people stay away in droves. Exhibitors lose money they can't afford, and give up on future events.
All in all a pretty poor effort all round. Made even worse by failure to market effectively.
I'm inclined to think it would be better to exhibit at major general interest events like home shows and the like, where people show up in droves
hey back today, wow had a few busy days, enjoying the sun, going to some lovely places out bush and enjoying swimming in remote streams and going shooting, yeah now I am tired out.
hmm not sure how to add movies on this site but will give it a go later
so if you were a little early bird on the Friday, and went to the media pre launch for the Perth Mint new series Australian megafauna, you could have seen all the glitz and glam of the media circuit, this had perks that included free food and free entry to the museum and the expo
(http://blog.perthmint.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/Procoptodon-Silver-Coin.jpg)
we got to see the designer Peter Trusler, and took pics, plus we got him to sign our coin for us too!!!
things of interest were original design images, I took a pic of the one on display, but a lucky lady won another concept image that was quickly tucked away.

next we had the lengthy walk around the stadium to line up for entry to the expo, I took this walk several times as I went to the coin auction area too.
first stop as always is the RAM stand
the counterstamp $1 set up
(http://www.australian-coins.net/gallery/albums/userpics/10011/ram.JPG)
later in the day my dad found a unstamped $1 on the floor, when he piked it up Goldy took it and teases the operator, who make a huge song and dance about it and demanded it be returned, along with ill loose my job if its not returned and ill call security, hmm I don't know if it was fun or games or not, but I didn't want to get involved with it, kind of upset me for the day, anyway the coin was returned, and we did the right thing, but yeah kinda sucked

ok so the baby mint set will still contain the Ethel Pedley's Dot and the Kangaroo medallion and $1
ill add some interesting items from dealers next having a break
Thanks for sharing AC.
I wonder if there are those who visit the area of the portable press when the operator is away or just after the machine has been removed.
Quotelater in the day my dad found a unstamped $1 on the floor, when he piked it up Goldy took it and teases the operator

Its not like we don't already know what they're like. Either pick it up and hand it back, or stick it in your pocket and walk away. There is no third option.
ok here are some things that jumped out
I seen two of these sets, I didn't know they made them in gold! even if you were just into federation coins, a gold 50c and $1 are really interesting. only 650 sets made, I got a photo of the certificate too.
and a no1 certificate! haha yeah I thought no 1 and no 2 were always saved for the trust or museum, yeah I am pretty sure I read that somewhere, maybe that's just RAM products and not PM.
also something that seems to becoming more popular was bullion products, either poured bars or coins. yeah my favourite bullion thing for the day was a 5kg silver coin, forgot to ask if I could hold it and take a pic, I remember last time coin club - who was not there this time brought along a 1kg koala coin in 2011 and I got to hold that, hehe a big thrill.
um ok so I put a video up on facebook, as public so I think people should be able to see it? um let me know if it works ill do the rest.
this one should be one of the hologram coins that were on display, hehe try and touch it ;)

ok so the next thing I did for the day was go down to the auction room where I just HAD TO SEE THE 1937 THREEPENCE, haha cos I will never have one or see one again, so the lovely people let me take pics to share with the forum, also got a copy of the catalogue of the auction, have not found time to read it yet. they were also kind enough to pull out for photos a 1937 pattern penny, 1930 penny and kookaburra half penny

have heaps of pic of this 1937 penny, but these were probably the best, yeah it takes 10 photos to get one nice one, especially when you are taking pics on the go
didn't shrink the first two pics down, so you can see all the detail on the coin, there was a line across the roo as far as I could tell, but I wouldn't dare take it out of the safeflip, all pics were taken as the coins were presented in 2x2 safeflips.

ok the best thing that I enjoyed as part of the media circuit was watching Brad Blaze paint and talking to him afterwards, also talked to the Royal Australian Mint Engineering Services Manager, who is invited to join the forum, so he might drop on by and say hi :) also expressed how forum members felt about the quality of coins and he was going to look into it, as our feedback is important to him.
