*sigh* usually never but there is one exception. Pre-decimal proofs! A pre-decimal proof should be red and any sign of purple is a result of poor storage. Yeah they can look pretty and I do have a pretty purple halfpenny proof but it shouldn't look the way it does. You heard it here, I said it...
example:

still preddy
saw one like that in a status international auction cat.
Yuk, sorry PPH but that looks orrible............
I agree that it looks unusual, however if I found it in my Xmas stocking I wouldn't burst into tears.!! :dontknow:
PVC damage ? also has heaps of hairlines on the obverse, cleaned as well ?
I dont find it attractive either. And the first thing i noticed was the hairlines. When PCGS/NGC grade predecimal proofs will they always grade but at a lower number? or will they body bag a proof as well?

Those aren't cleaning hairlines, they're die polishing striations. They are on all genuine 1959 Melbourne proof half pennies.
Theyre pretty pronounced and not very attractive. Do you have an untoned example tou could show off walter?

They don't look like that in hand, they're actually very fine and invisible except under a bright light. These Melbourne copper proofs are hard to photograph in slabs - they only look good if you reflect the light source into the lens (which glares on the slab).
The striations are in the form of little curls which are raised at a curving angle, this makes only particular angles visible at particular angles of light so when you photograph them you only get the parts of the striations visible which makes them seem flat and lifeless - in hand they actually look quite beautiful and are responsible for what looks like a curvature of the surface when viewed without a glass.
I don't have any untoned examples, they're extremely rare in such a state.
Thanks for the info walter!
I dug out a pic of mine. Not much use as the slab is all scratched up. Bought it already graded off Wynyard Coins. They didn't care much for the plastic.

Those are some stunning coins above guys, pph that's the nicest 1959 proof halfpenny i've ever seen in terms of colour.

With a bright enough light source you can capture the reflectivity but you need to focus the light source into the lens, otherwise the die polish will appear flat.

You need a very bright, focused light to see them. I find taking a macro photo with the flash is the easiest way to reveal them.
My typical way of photographing coins is putting them under the DSLR with everything on auto (using the flash as the light source). This makes Melbourne proofs look horrible. I found the only way to make them look good is to reflect the light source into the lens (which isn't easy for slabbed coins). I managed to do this for the half penny below but you can still see a hint of glare.
If i get to see it again i'll try and stick it under a better light then
